Hi, so a few more questions, sorry!
 1. In relation to recombinant plasmids, as the genetic markers like antibiotic resistance or ampicillin resistance already in the plasmid or are they inserted by us?
2. How much detail do we need to know about glucose? Like, do we need to know about how to glucose enters the cells and about its structure and stuff?
3. Does the lac operon require ATP at all?
4. Do prokaryotes undergo aerobic respiration too? If so, where does this occur?
5. When talking about the location of the light dependent reaction, is it best to say on the grana/granum, or on thylakoid membrane or thylakoid disks or in the thylakoids?
6. Which ions should we talk about if we are asked which are involved in the transmission of an action potential? The 2016 Insights exam asked (MC 15)
Which of the following ions are repsonsible for the transmission of an action potential allong an axon:
A. Calcium and sodium
B. Sodium and potassium
C. Potassium and Calcium
D. Sodium, potassium aand calcium

The correct answer was B, but when I looked it up on the internet, some sites said that calcium was involved as well.

Thank you!  ;D

1) When describing Interferon, is it ample to say that it just 'slows the spread of viral particles through the use of antiviral enzymes and recruitment of natural killer cells'?
2) Is the splitting of water in the light-dependent reaction an example of hydrolysis or photolysis?

2. The splitting of water is photolysis. Hydrolysis is the separation of a molecule by water and photolysis is by the action of light.

The endosymbiosis theory suggests that several organelles (notably - mitochondria and chloroplasts) were originally independent ancestral prokaryotes.

Is this definition sufficient enough?

How much detail do you need to put into the signal transduction of neurotransmitters? Do you need to talk about calcium ions?

Also do you need to know the functions of plant hormones?

Thanks in advance for any help.

That's on the right track; but make sure that you mention that they were engulfed by eukaryotes at some point.

You don't need to know much about neurons at all anymore - just using neurotransmitters as a method of inducing signal transduction. As for plant hormones, they're useful to know but I don't think there's too much emphasis on it now compared to previous study designs.

Hey guys does anyone know of a place I can find the solutions to the 2017 VCAA Sample Exam? I know the answers to the multiple choice are at the bottom, but if anyone know's where I could find suggested solutions to the short answers that would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks :)

here you go - the short answer begins on page 3.
courtesy of VCAA. This can be found on their Biology Exams and Examination Reports page.

Hey,
For a question that asked what the difference between accuracy and precision is, would this be a suitable response:
Accuracy is how close your measurement is to the correct value, whereas precision is how close together your set of measurements are.

Thanks :)

That's entirely correct.

Which of the following is not an example of post transcriptional modification?
A. Alternate splicing
B. Exon rearrangement
C. addition of a methy guanine cap
D. alternate protein folding

The answer is D because it is a post translational modification.
Surely D is still a post transcription modification though?

D is classed as a post-translational modification. It's a case of picking the least incorrect answer - it makes the most sense of the bunch.

Does salt water affect the chance of fossilisation?

Edit: Also, is gene therapy still relevant to the study design? I don't see it mentioned as one of the dot points but it has appeared in some practice exams.

I believe gene therapy is still relevant to the study design - I've encountered it a fair bit in practice exams, and it's not too much content to learn anyway. As far as I'm aware, salt water doesn't decrease the chances of fossilization occuring as the remains can still be covered in sediment - hence why there are still plenty of fossils found in oceans.
