Thanks so much. no that's okay. appreciate the response! :)
Yes I agree. I am actually cold calling; going around and handing my resume and asking for jobs even though I haven't had much luck yet. but yeah I know its all about the persistence. I will keep trying. Thanks :)
For what it's worth, I think I applied to about 20 places before I scored my first interview and subsequent job. After that, it becomes so much easier :)
It can be really draining and demoralising to keep on applying and get knocked back - but keep on persevering, and your break will come soon enough!

if you haven't figured out what the problem you're having is after 4 semesters of trying, why do you think the 5th semester will be any different? your explanation for your exam struggles is nebulous, so I just interpret it as you being unprepared each time because you're either not putting in the work or its not within your capabilities (or both). engineering is a very difficult course, and things are only going to get more challenging in second and third year. if you don't want to take any more time off, my advice would be to do a semester of units outside your faculty. try Arts, Business, IT, whatever. something may spur your interest, and the aforementioned are a lot easier than engineering. a course change will refresh your GPA/WAM (to some extent, your fails will never be quashed from your record completely), give you some confidence and perspective. you may view it as a waste of time/money, but judging by your post it could be a more worthwhile endeavour than smacking your head against the wall for a 5th time and hoping that it breaks down. good luck

Hey y'all

I'm picking subjects for next year and was reading this comment when I noticed ravenswood mentioned taking a semester to do units outside of your degree. Anyone know how to do this, who I can approach to talk about it, etc.? I'm in the Bachelor of Science - Adv (Research).

I really want to try doing something outside of science as I'm just not feeling like picking it was the best option for me - I mean, I like it, but this 'liking' wavers with time and honestly I am quite unsure exactly what I want to do with, and get out of, this degree. I'm thinking of taking a law subject, LAW1111, as well as a couple arts subjects, but we can't do Law electives in my degree, hence the question. Of the 24 credit points allotted for elective study I've already done 12, so 2 more subject remain, which I intend to use finishing a minor in Philosophy.

If I do take a semester, it will presumably not count towards my degree yes? I don't think it will. Also, does anyone know if it is possible to 'do' a law unit without actually being enrolled in it, e.g attending the lectures and accessing and completing the material outside of actually being enrolled in the subject - because if so that would be swell.

Thanks!

Remember that nothing comes free - if you want to do units "just for shits and gigs" that don't count for your degree, you need to pay for them out pocket. Full-fee, too - no HECS, that's only for degrees.

If you really want to try some other units, unfortunately, you're going to have give up that philosophy minor. That's the double-edged sword to picking the research degree (speaking of, do I know you...?) - you can accelerate straight through science, but you lose elective availability.

If you're really worried about not liking what you're doing, two thoughts:
1. Just pick up some unit readers from friends in other subjects, have a read through them, and see if you like them. It's not the same experience, but it'll be similar. If you decide you do like them enough you want to switch degrees, then either do a degree transfer, or drop down to regular science, where you'll get an extra 4 elective units.
2. It might be just because you're in first year - depending on what you're thinking of majoring in, it's very common (particularly for other people in our course) to find you hate the first year, and then love it more and more as you get deeper into it. I've particularly heard this for physics and bio, if you're doing either of those.
