Transferring into different degrees/universities

Hi eveyone,
Can someone please explain how transferring into another course/university works? Because I've heard people say you don't need to worry if you don't get right into the course/uni you want, you can transfer into it at a later date.

Also when trasnferring, do you need to stay at the same uni or can you transfer to a completely new one?

Thanks!

On top of this, some Uni's favour students already studying at their Uni when allowing for transfers between courses. So if there is a particular course you want to get into but do not originally get an offer, it may be wise to study a similar course at that University and transfer after a year, as you are more likely to be offered a spot.
