Can you write in pencil for diagrams?

The pen vs pencil debate is centred around whether it will be picked up during scanning. Assuming that you're using a decent pencil which isn't ridiculously light, then pencil will be fine. If you're really worried, you can simply do it in pencil and then trace over it with pen.
