Title: SUVAT for Specialist Maths
Post by: TheEagle on July 07, 2020, 10:43:24 pm
Hey guys

do we need to memorise the SUVAT equations for exam 1?

Here's a copy of the formula sheet for this year. Everything you've learned this year is assessable in both exams - so, if it's not in that sheet, but it is in the study design, then yes, you need to memorise it

thank you! How often are suvat equations required in exams?

Constant acceleration formulas are not on the study design. They may be used as appropriate, but you are expected to be able to solve constant acceleration problems using calculus. I can't recall ever feeling the need to memorise SUVAT because using calculus or a velocity-time graph for constant acceleration is so straightforward, but YMMV.

Constant acceleration formulas aren't on the study design, so you don't HAVE to memorise them. You can use calculus for both variable acceleration and constant acceleration. BUT I would say memorising those formulas would be extra convenient, because although you can solve it with calculus, using constant acceleration is much more efficient!

To clarify, in the end-of-year exam, would SUVAT not be considered as appropriate working for method marks?

You can use SUVAT if you'd like - VCAA openly states that they will accept any method if it is mathematically correct.

Yes KM is right, I should have said "you are expected to be able to solve constant acceleration problems using calculus". Sorry for the error.
