hey y'all, feel free to use these notes for your CAF's revision on 9.1 Research Methodology
this pretty much covers the 1st major section of the Yr 12 Syllabus :O

SYLLABUS DOT POINTS:
research methodology
research fundamentals
  • the purpose of research, eg advance knowledge, increase understanding, educate others, inform practice
      • the focus of research, eg: question/hypothesis

• sampling
   – methods
   – sample group
   – sample size

• types of data
   – primary and secondary
   – qualitative and quantitative

The Purpose Of Research = The “why” behind the research topic

1. Advance Knowledge
   ➜ Gain a deeper understanding
   ➜ Build on knowledge
2. Increase Understanding
   ➜  To explain (what, when, where, why, how)
   ➜ find out new information
3. Educate Others
   ➜  To educate and teach others
   ➜  Increase topic knowledge
   ➜  information dispel
4. Inform Practice
   ➜  change methods and procedures based on findings (eg: medical studies)
   ➜  understand and ensure self and others of their practice

The Focus Of Research -------
★ Focus = problem the researcher wants to solve
★ Hypothesis  = statement that the research must prove or disprove
★ Research Question = a question the research is centred around

Sampling -------
✸ Sampling:
    A small amount or part of something, intended to represent a larger amount or the whole
✸ Sample Group:
    The representative sample that has been chosen to be the target population
✸ Sample Size: 
    The number of participants in the research study, around 10%

Sampling Methods -------
Simple Random Sampling:   
        choosing participants in a way that each person in the population has an equal chance of being selected
Systematic Sampling:
        selecting one person at random, then choosing additional people at evenly spaced intervals
Cluster Sampling:
        obtained by selecting groups from the population E.g. A school within a particular region
Convenience Sampling:
        randomly selecting people from a population you have easy access to (poorest way of selecting a sample)
Stratified Sampling:
        breaking a population into groups based on a characteristic and selects an even amount of people from each group to represent the whole

Types Of Data -------

☼ Primary Data: information collected through 1st hand research
NEG: biased, time-consuming, expensive, fake answers
POS: current, reliable, original and relevant to the topic
⇝ Survey, Observation, Interview

☼ Secondary Data: Information collected 2nd hand, from another researcher or another source e.g. newspapers, articles and books
NEG: unreliable, out of date opinions, might not reflect current views
POS: easy access, cheap, saves time
⇝ Literature Review, Questionnaire, Interview, Observation

☼ Quantitative Data: numerical/statistical information counted measured or grouped e.g graph data, experiments
NEG: some info can’t be put in numbers, limited results, less detailed
POS: objective, reliable, less bias than qualitative, visually represents using graphs, understand the ‘what’
⇝ Questionnaire, Interview, Observation

☼ Qualitative Data: beliefs, feelings, values, attitudes, opinions, ideas and detailed information that is observed
NEG: subjective, bias, harder to generalise, depends on researchers skills to interpret
POS: compares opinions and ideas, supports quantitative data, illustrates pos/neg effect of something, understand the ‘why’ and ‘how’
⇝ Questionnaires, Surveys, Interviews, Focus Groups, Observation, Case Studies

difference between qualitative and quantitative? :  D
TIP: Here’s how I remember it, it might help you too!
Quantity (the amount or number) = quantitative
Quality (how good it is/length) = qualitative
