How Badly will a weak cohort impact my score?

So far iv been doing quite well on my SACs, averaging about 90% for every subject but the rest of my year isn't doing so good. Half of the class has to re-sit almost every SAC we do and i'm worried this is going to fuck me following exams when they all do garbage and my scores won't be worth as much. So if someone could clarify for me i'd appreciate it, will my scores be dramatically scaled down? or will i be fine if i just do good myself.

You'll be fine if you do well on the exam. It's not so much the strength of your cohort that matters if you're at the top. If you're at the top of a really bad cohort then exam scores matter a lot.

How about whether you have an overall weak cohort, but there are a few high achieving students (eg 5/20 students) and you aren't ranked #1 but maybe #2 or #3? Will the weak cohort then affect your score badly?

Summarised into three general cases:

1) If everyone, including you & the cohort's weak section, scores *proportionally* similar exam marks to their internal marks => no they don't affect you.

2) If everyone, including you & the cohort's weak section, scores lower exam marks than their internal marks => no they don't affect you (everyone contributes to internal marks including yours being moderated down).

3) If the cohort's good section scores similar exam marks to their internal marks and the weak section scores lower exam marks than their internal marks => yes, the weak section causes everyone's marks (except 1st rank) to be moderated down.

H, just thought I'd link the VCAA site. It has information regarding the scaling of VCE coursework :)
One thing it says is
Quote
the highest* moderated score is made equal to the highest external score
the median* and quartiles* of the moderated scores are made equal to the median and quartiles of the external scores.
The moderation procedure aims to make the mean (average) of the moderated scores as close as possible to the mean of the external scores. The procedure is then applied to the school’s coursework score for each student to obtain their moderated coursework score.
It also has more information you should check out!
Statistical Moderation of VCE Coursework
Completed VCE 2016
2015: Biology
2016: Methods | Physics | Chemistry | Specialist Maths | Literature
ATAR : 97.90
2017: BSci (Maths and Engineering) at MelbUni
