Title: Keeping me on task有ou needs to write her thesis!
Post by: sweetiepi on October 12, 2020, 07:25:55 pm
Hey hey! I'm at the end of my honours year, which means I need to uh actually sit down and write my thesis (because I cannot last minute this haha).

Each day until I submit a draft I aim to do a little bit each day耀tarting today. The point of this thread is to keep me accountable and to guilt me into doing it. 😂 (and for others to follow on if they want (is that a thing? Idk!))

Anyways today:
- I fixed my references up in my intro/literature review section (as I ported my text over from 'monthly reports' and had to merge my referencing)
- Started adding proper headings
- Highlighted parts I desperately need to write on
- Refined some of my methods

Hey Insanipi!

Nice thread, it sounds like you are already getting ahead with your thesis, can't wait to hear the updates! :)
Also, I've seen your degree listed in your signature, is your thesis on molecular biology?

Good luck!

Gl. Writing my thesis was one of the hardest things I feel I've done in my life - more than happy to do anything to help someone else get through it

Hey!

I've only done three monthly reports so far but putting it all together has made starting that little bit easier! :D

Molecular biology is the simple way of putting it傭ut the more accurate thing would be CRISPR/Cas and gene editing, given that's my focus (at least this one cool new thing with CRISPR/Cas9 anyways haha) ^_^

Ty. I'm dreading actually writing most of it up, and it's lead to some procrastination of all kinds on my end and a supervisor who keeps reminding me that I need to be working on it 🤭

That sounds so cool to do a thesis on, we learnt about CRISPR at school during Biology and it was very interesting ;D

I also want to say, being on the forefront of CRISPR research seems so awesome! I researched it for my biology AOS 3 Investigation Task and was fascinated by its applications in medicine and also the ethical dilemma regarding its use. I'm now writing my English POV oral presentation on it too!

Best of luck to your thesis and can't wait for the updates  ;D

It's definitely really interesting, and there's new research journal papers on it everyday! There's still so much we don't understand about it, but I'm still super thrilled that Emanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna* received the Nobel Prize for it!

*Speaking of Doudna, I'm attending a World CRISPR day seminar in the wee hours of the morning (2am) (US people time is much nicer) next week and I'm super keen!

Thanks for the support btw!

It is interesting!

Daily update: Fixed some of my cell culture transfection methods, and jotted down discussion points for my results.

Love this! Maybe seeing someone else give daily updates will guilt me into kicking my own ass into gear for writing my one.

The deadline is so close yet it seems so far? Hard to explain, but my procrastination feeds off this warped perception of the deadline.

I was getting guilted by the fact that I had to sit and wait for things to be ready to experiment again and I just sat here watching YouTube instead, and my supervisor often keeps asking me how I'm going D:

The deadline is so far but so close, it's actually scary! If COVID didn't shut me down March-May, I would've had mine due next Friday. It's actually wild haha!

Daily update: Refined my wording of hypothesis and aims, added a couple of headings in my literature review/introduction, and added in some literature review for formulations.

Really curious how long you both have! For reference, I think I started my writing about a month out? But I had already basically finished my introduction at the time, so I did have about 10/60-ish pages written

My thesis due date is 20th November haha; I havea fair whack of intro but not enough (I have a text limit of 35 pages at 12pt Arial and 1.5 spacing haha)

Whoa what. That's a lot of lit, mine was only meant to be 10. How big are they expecting the thesis to be??

I've got until 27th October. My intro/methods/results have just been sent off for their final revision, so all I'm doing is putting off the discussion (I have no excuse lmao). Psych just has a word min/max of 9~12k words for the whole thing and I'm sitting at about 7k.

So jealous of that due date!

Aside from the 35 pages worth of text total, no idea how big they expect to be lmao 😂

Honest update: I haven't written anything since Monday. And I'm okay with this because sometimes things happen.

I'm making up for it tomorrow at home, I'll have a bumper thesis writing day ahead! <3

Update:
Yesterday:
- Ripped up my discussion and dot pointed it all out based on discussions I had with supervisor during the week
- Finished off two parts of my methods that were super long
- Fixed graphs up to reflect what they actually represented

Today:
- Proofread methods from yesterday
- Added a couple of graphics in the methods that look pretty fancy (thanks BioRender :D )
- Fixed my line spacing to 1.5 (I realised half of my pages were on 1 and the other half was on 1.5)

Today: did some minor editing and dot pointing in my intro/lit review. Also trashed most of a page of my methods as I had a whole page dedicated to repeating essentially the same thing at least four times with only one thing different each time. It's important to cut the waffle sometimes! Also added some dot points to some methods so I have a starting point when I next touch the methods.

Nothing special today, given I hauled my bum out to uni today :D

Today I:
- finalised my glosssary
- added to my intro/literature review
- added some details into my methods

No actual writing progress today, I've just been reading papers so that I can add to the tail end of my intro/literature review. It is kind of hard to do this when there's so little on one topic, and about 10 million papers on another, and sifting through all of them to make a rich intro/lit review is difficult!

Hey fren!! A little bird told me this is due in a couple of weeks - can we get an update on any more progress, or maybe a study plan to help you get it all done? <3

It's been a while, but I had to put the thesis writing on hold whilst I had some coursework to do last week, and then I was mentally dead over the weekend.

So! I'm back, and I'm happy to report that the my methods section is done (in its first draft iteration). This is very good <3
I'm also in the middle of analysing my results (and making my head hurt in the process), so I'm getting there!

Collecting people in a room together where all you do is write is one method I recommend, works best if these people are in your honours cohort and so have the same deadline. Particularly if you do it at all hours while living inside the said room at university without anyone finding out - bonus points if you can locate a nearby convenience store to go buy chocolate milk from between short walking breaks

I'll need to speedtype fast if my supervisor expects a first draft by Friday :-[ -inserts imagery of Kermit smashing a typewriter-

I wish we could do this, but the uni is already shirdy that we hang about in the tuterooms during our spare time between labs :P (that, and I'm an actual sleepyhead and will fall asleep, which will make the uni mad hahaha)

Monday update: I feel so bad for the people reviewing it. I just got feedback and they said: "It's a very good start, requires a bit more seasoning. I've made some comments for you to look at". Now to do some editing! 🤣

You're probably already aware for this, but for the people playing at home - this is academic speak for: "sweet, looks like you know which papers to read and remember how to write like an undergrad. Now, let's teach you how to write like an ACTUAL scientist. Also, don't print this out - you'll run out of red ink on the first page"

But also, don't let the imposter syndrome hit you too hard - it's perfectly normal even for first year PhD students to still be struggling with report writing, and a thesis is a whole other kettle of fish. Your supervisor sounds like you're actually doing better than expected - which isn't a reflection on you, it's a reflection on what the typical honours student looks like. Hold your head high, and remember to take some pride in your accomplishments.

Been told that it looks good, just to add a few more things into it. Things are looking okay, but I'm also exhausted and wish to be done with this, even though the past week has been pretty shit, personally.

I'm nearly there though! :)

Good luck with the oral presentation and viva ❤
