Title: Lemurbruv vs Year 12
Post by: lemurbruv on January 07, 2022, 02:04:45 pm
Hi! I'm lemurbruv ;D

I've read some VCE journals recently and decided it would be interesting to document my own!

A bit about me:

- Class of 2022
- Subjects: English, methods, spesh, chem, french
- Aiming for a 99+ ATAR (lol we'll see how that goes)
- Have always liked school, although I'm nervous for year 12
- I play piano and am doing my Grade 8 exam this year
- I'm addicted to Tiny Tower and practically every other Nimblebit game ever someone plz help
- Excited for what the year will hold!

I will try to update this once a week when school goes back (maybe less if school is super boring, but I'll try and stick to a schedule)

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy!

Pre-Term 1 (3 weeks to go)

So I guess I’ll start with a bit of a reflection on 2021 (Year 11)

What I did well:

-   I got into a solid study routine, although it definitely wasn’t perfect - I did a LOT of procrastinating throughout the year, especially through online learning - but I picked up my act towards exam time
-   I found a balance (albeit not an ideal one) between my school life and personal life, I realised through all the spare time I had during lockdowns how much going for walks and giving myself mental space puts things into perspective (definitely something to continue)

What I will do differently for year 12:

-   Ask for help from teachers more, especially during class. I’ve always been nervous and shy about putting up my hand. I think this has been to my disadvantage, but I suspect lots of people struggle with it. This year I’m going to make a conscious effort to ask lots of questions and face my fears!
-   Knuckle down on procrastination. I wasted soooo much time last year just biting my nails and pretending that ignoring my work would make it go away. I’m going to prioritise motivating myself to study and limit my distractions as much as I can (lol we’ll see how that goes)
-   Appreciate my friends! They are all great people and I never spent any time with them last year, so this year I’m going to make an effort to strengthen my connections with people!
-   Get ALL my homework done, even the stuff that I don’t think I need to do. Because usually when teachers give you homework it’s for a reason ;D
-   There’s probably more but I think those are the major ones

So far my holidays have been... very chill. Finding motivation pretty hard to come by to be honest, and I’m quietly trying not to freak out because I don’t want to screw up year 12. I need a competitive ATAR for the course I want to do at uni, so I’m aiming for 99+, but I also want to remain realistic. I’ve never been good at that  ;D

Currently MAJORLY procrastinating spesh and english, but at least french is getting there. Methods and chem is done  8)

Hope everyone is having a good holidays!

Hi Lemurbruv,
Nice to meet you! I was the same in lockdown, walks were lifesavers! It's super cool that you are continuing to play piano and do an exam in year 12, all the best for it!

Also, love your subjects (I did exactly the same in year 12), do you have a favourite (I'm guessing perhaps methods or chemistry given that you've already finished the homework for these subjects?) And what course did you want to do next year?

Hey chocolatemilkshake! Thanks, honestly I'm wondering if it's going to be too stressful to do Grade 8 and Year 12 at the same time, but I'm trying to make things easy for myself and practise 2 hours a day during the holidays so that I can get my program ready for May (doing mid year)

Also, love your subjects (I did exactly the same in year 12), do you have a favourite (I'm guessing perhaps methods or chemistry given that you've already finished the homework for these subjects?) And what course did you want to do next year?

I honestly don't really have a favourite subject, because I like them all. I suppose chemistry is probably my least favourite, mostly because the teacher I had for year 11 (and now for year 12) made things really confusing and is quite disorganised, never answering my questions properly >:(

I want to study journalism at RMIT :)

Pre-Term 1 (2 weeks to go)

A brief spesh update…
So I may have really freaked myself out by reading everyone’s comments in the post-spesh-2 exam thread of 2021.
I did really well in year 11 (E1: 100, E2: 81) but just cannot see how I will even pass year 12. I think our school made the exam much easier than VCAA would (with the same content) and I’m so scared. I’ve heard that keeping a logbook for mistakes is a very good idea, for methods and spesh so I will definitely be doing that!

I’m not too worried about methods, but I know now not to get such a big head with it… one of my biggest mistakes last year was getting too cocky about it and that resulted in lost marks in some of my SACs. Instead of saying ‘yeah I know all this’, I’m going to practice saying ‘I think I know it but I’ll pretend like I don’t for now.’ I’m hoping that will help prompt me to put up my hand in class and really make valuable use of class time.

General comments
I think at this point I’m just overwhelming myself by reading up how to do well instead of actually just getting stuck into work. I’m also really letting myself off the hook with work, although I’ve been watching the AN lectures this week and so far they are SO GOOD.
The chem one was so helpful because my teacher’s OneNote is faulty and she still hasn’t bothered to fix it, so we have started the year with no notes AT ALL for chem, tbh it’s really pissing me off because I want to get my Unit 3 notes done. At this point I’m just going to take my learning into my own hands. She was not such a great teacher in year 11 but I still managed a 95+ average, so hopefully this year I can follow a similar pattern.

I am still excited for year 12, I really miss the routine of school and the holidays have been a bit chaotic with all that my family has been doing. We just came back from a holiday and I’m so behind on work  :-\

Thanks all for reading, hope everyone is having a great break!

Term 1 Week 1

Had the first day of year 12 yesterday! It was good in some ways, stressful in others. At least my english creative has been moved to next week.

The whole covid thing is a bit scary, especially with rumours going around that people tested positive yesterday but still went to school. I'm trying not to let it affect my concentration in class but sometimes it's hard  :(

When I got home from school yesterday I felt super overwhelmed with all the homework I had to do, and I had to do an hour of piano as well, but I got through it. I didn't do all the homework because I'm doing some this morning, and I'm probably going to try and fit my practice in the mornings. Taking care of myself is my top priority this year, although I keep forgetting that and don't take enough breaks.  ;D

Maths subjects:

Highly recommend a mistakes log book for methods and spesh! I bought a couple of notebooks the other day and I've found that engaging myself in the mistakes I'm making by analysing and documenting where I'm going wrong is so helpful and actually makes me understand the content better, because once I track down where I've gone wrong sometimes the right way to do it magically appears in front of me ;D

Chem:

Pretty nervous for chem this year tbh. My teacher gave us the onenote so that was great, and she has given us plenty of access to other great resources which is really good. My only complaint is that I asked her a question that I was having trouble with and she wouldn't answer it, instead she said 'I'll have a think about that once I get my brain back into gear', so I still don't know the answer. I'll probs post it in the chem qn thread haha. I'm thinking study groups and asking some different chem teachers will help me out with that this year.

How would you guys tackle a teacher who never answers your questions (or emails)?
She did it a lot last year when I had 'complicated questions' that it seemed she couldn't be bothered answering.

Anyways, I'm pretty excited for this year overall! I hope everyone had a good break and for (most?) a good first day back yesterday! Lmk how it went :)

Thanks for reading!!

Term 1 Week 1 (Wednesdayyy)

Mini update :)

covid is going around my school so bad rn, it's pretty scary. I have an english sac on monday, but a girl in my class who I was sitting next to tested positive yesterday night. I'm doing a RAT in the morning, and I'm just praying I don't have it before my sac. Fingers crossed! I asked my teacher what happens if we have to miss the sac because of covid, and she said they weren't 100% sure yet. I'm finding the creative sac pretty hard, I'm trying to get a 30/30 (lol at least I can dream right?) and there's so many different aspects that I have to get perfect, especially controlling my descriptions. I'll keep you guys posted on how I do :)

Another chem rant  ;D

So my chem teacher got back to me about the question which was good, and she said I was right... it was a dud question.
Which left me wondering, why not tell the rest of the class? Because there'd be people in there thinking 'why can't I do this question?' and someone could get upset :(

She also tried to tell us that VCAA requires that we write CO2 as a liquid for our states on equations (WRONG). We were all so confused, and at the end of the lesson she realised that she meant H2O (so VCAA Chem you must write H2O as a liquid in equations).

Anyway I feel like I've been pretty negative these last couple of days. I've just been stressed, and piano takes out so much of my study time as well. At least that one is over in May (before my methods sac).

As always cheers for reading fam :)

Um I was taught differently, VCAA wants H2O produced in combustion as (g) cuz the heat produced should vapourise it.

Sorry to hear that year 12 isn’t starting well, hope it gets better soon!

Edit: VCAA chem 2019 Q4 extended response gives you a thermochemical equation with H2O in gas state

Hmmm. My teacher told me that VCAA wants as liquid because some can form condensation. Is there any way I can verify this ? (I'm not sure I'll be taking my questions to her anymore)

She said sometimes (g) could come up in exam qns but that in answers you should write (l)

Everyone disregard my previous statement below until I get to the bottom of this:
so VCAA Chem you must write H2O as a liquid in equations

Will probs ask chem thread

Thanks so much Billuminati for bringing that to my attention!!

You don't see the flame from a BBQ gas tank (mostly propane) leaking liquid water when burning, so the condensation must happen after cooling in the air, which means the immediate state for H2O should be (g). However, I was taught by my teacher that if the question actually explicitly states "standard conditions" or "SLC" in the text, VCAA thinks it should be liquid, and she's a VCAA assessor

Term 1 Week 2 (yayyyy we made it through week 1!)

Update :)
Hi again fam, ngl last week was rough! I was mostly stressing about the english creative which I got done today (woohooooo), and struggling to keep on top of all my spesh work. I had a talk to my teacher and she just helped me consolidate all the homework I needed to do, wrote it down on a sticky note for me and I'm proud to say I got through it all! I guess I should reach out for help earlier instead of letting it boil over before I talk to my teacher. My methods teacher was also really encouraging, and she makes me feel so inspired omg she's great.

I started french oral tutoring today too which went so much better than I expected! I was able to talk in french (save a few questions in english lol) for like a whole 20 minutes which was great and she was really nice too. I had a meeting about my ATAR goals with one of the atar people at our school and that was really cool too, the guy really knows his stuff.

Had my first ensemble rehearsal today and... yeah... I mean it was the first day of rehearsals again so like, it's fine  ;D
I also had my booster on saturday and I was so sick on sunday but I still got my creative memorised which I was really proud of because it felt like I had a brick in my head lol. I'm fine now, and it wasn't really that bad.

Chem also wasn't that bad today, although we started thermochemical equations and I'm a bit confused ngl. Gonna defs be watching those edrolos!

SPEAKING OF EDROLO OMG HAS ANYONE SEEN THE GUY WHO DOES THE METHODS AND SPESH EDROLOS??
if you have spesh edrolo, plz go to the first vid of "Regions of the complex plane". You won't be disappointed.

That's it for now, guys! Thanks always for reading  ;D

Mini update (T1WK2)

Hi again!

This week my emotions and motivation have been:

I honestly feel like I just need to stop complaining about chem and get on with it. So that's what I'm going to do. At this point I think working ahead would be the most beneficial as I get very little out of class time. I'm finding the edrolos super helpful, and my teacher always assigns us tonnes of it and I can never watch it all so working ahead and watching tonnes on the weekend and then working at my own pace would be good. I think.

I also have to compose something last minute for assembly on monday for Viola and Piano. So we'll see how that goes. I wrote something yesterday and we tried to play it today but it was crap so I'm going to do a rewrite. I'm also meeting with the my Year Level Coordinator tomorrow morning to sort out all this chem stuff (she teaches chem too)

Anyway thanks fam  ;D

good job getting your english done! definitely feel you with the booster shot too - i had mine yesterday and wanted to sleep in all my classes.

and yes omg the maths guy for edrolo uses some interesting analogies... the methods video for composite functions was definitely something haha.

hopefully chem works out for you!

OMG YES THE COMPOSITE FUNCTIONS ANALOGIES!! our teacher was like 'um.....'

I talked to my YL coordinator today about chem and she was really helpful, advised me to work ahead if I was understanding the content so it was good to get that advice from her.

I also finished that stupid composition last night and it actually isn't that bad...

We'll have to just see how it goes at assembly on Monday  ;D

Aww cheers  :)

Atm in chem we are doing fuels and thermochem, redox etc as part of AoS1

One of my teachers suggested I just go ahead and finish all the content for AoS1 especially since I'm not great with redox haha

Yeah, for chem my class is also doing thermochem and fuels, but our SAC for AOS1 is split into two. We're not starting redox and galvanic cells till later after our experimental design for calorimetry. Are you enjoying the AOS1 topics so far? I'd have to be honest that I find fuels rather boring, but I don't mind thermochem so much. I'm more excited for redox since I actually really enjoyed it in year 11. I have my first chem SAC on Monday which is kinda terrifying though, but hopefully I can get through it in one piece haha. It's just hard because the fuels topic is soooooooooo dense with information! :(

Our teacher (I'm from the QCE system btw), was quite passionate about the topic and explained it really, really well. And if we didn't understand him, we had Tyler Dewitt videos that used really cool visuals and just made sense!

Term 1 Week 3

General Update

Hi fam 😊
I decided to post this on Wednesday just so I might have some more things to say.

For once I am actually on top of all my work!! I got this app called WaterDo and it is so good (made by the same people as Forest) and I highly recommend! (it does cost money though). I think it has 100% made a huge difference to my productivity in just a week and I’m feeling pretty good about myself ngl

On a less happy note, my composition performance with my friend on Monday didn’t go so well. In short, he walked out of the auditorium mid-performance. I won’t say much more about it, mostly because I get anxious that someone from my school might read this and piece together who I am. I actually get quite bad anxiety about the whole VCE journal thing, but I’m determined to continue. Just won’t include super specific stuff that could identify me I suppose. Anyone else like that?

Spesh

Last week for once in my life spesh actually made sense! We are moving lightning fast through content like NO other subject I take it's crazy. I forget how useful edrolo can be for consolidating what we learn in class. I’m just really slow to process stuff and need lots of practice time (which is hard to come by these days would you believe), is anyone else like that? We've moved onto Mod functions and ellipses, hyperbolas and I think we'll cover parametric equations tomorrow.

Yesterday I actually finished the work in class which was a miracle. I need to talk to my teacher about a study score goal because she seems to think I’ll get a 30 but I want a 35 ☹. I know that’d be hard but I want to try because I want every shot I’ve got at this scholarship in Brisbane as I will be broke af and at least it would pay some air fares XD

English

ALA in English is just one of my favourite things ever, because it is SO satisfying when you write a decent paragraph. I sat down and wrote a whole paragraph in 20 minutes (bear with me guys it's week 3  ;D) and I was pretty chuffed because it's not terrible. I think I focused too much on each specific detail about the article though, and not enough about the broader strategy employed by the author etc. I'll take it to my teacher tomorrow and see what she thinks. I reeealllly want my creative SAC mark back and I know it's gunna take a hundred years but I just really want to know if I got that 30/30. I'm honestly expecting maybe 27 or 28/30 given that I think I left a few important things out of my statement of intention. My teacher said it was 30 material but idk what she actually meant. I probs need to stop expecting so high because the reality is probably less than I'm expecting. I'll be very disappointed if I get a 25 tho. Oh well. I tried my best right?

Chem

I am loving chem this week. These thermochemical equations are so fun and the pracs are great, we are going to burn biodiesel tomorrow that we made in class last week and I'm really excited to put some theory into practice. I've moved ahead of my class on content per the advice of my teacher and started looking at redox because as I mentioned before I am just bad at it, and I will need a lot of practice with it.

On another note, I've been thinking lately that I'm expecting way too much of myself. I did so good on last year's exams, but I know that doesn't directly translate into year 12 scores, hence why I'm scared about this english mark, and I wanted to ask people's opinions of how much your year 11 scores are a reflection of your capabilities for year 12?
I think I need to stop expecting 100s of myself because they're rarely going to happen, and just settle down and try my very best. It's all anyone can ask, right? Obsessing over numbers does me no favours.

Anyway I know it was a long update, but thanks for reading anyway fam. I hope you're all having a good week!!

~ Lemur  ;D

I'm exactly the same! I write a lot of stuff I that end up deleting because I'm worried that people from my school would connect the dots and realise it's me. There's sooo many stories that I would love to tell. I continue post anyways because it is really fun and it makes for great memories to look back on once we're older and not concerned with school or uni. It's still quite sad that we feel like we have to keep this anonymous.

*Gasp* yes I always write stuff and delete it  :'( oh well it makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one!
Plus the journals are worth it, I think it's going to be a really good snapshot of my VCE, regardless of my ATAR.

Hi Lemur!

It’s good to hear school is going well, although I’m sorry to hear your performance didn’t go well.

I actually get quite bad anxiety about the whole VCE journal thing, but I’m determined to continue. Just won’t include super specific stuff that could identify me I suppose. Anyone else like that?

I get this. I’m thinking of doing a uni journal but I don’t want anyone to work out who I am. It shouldn’t matter, but I’d rather stay anonymous on the internet.

I’m just really slow to process stuff and need lots of practice time (which is hard to come by these days would you believe), is anyone else like that?

I think I’m a bit like this too, although it may just be that I’m not satisfied until I completely understand things.

Personally, my year 12 marks were similar to and sometimes better than my year 11 marks. This can vary based on a lot of factors though, and the important thing in year 12 is ranking rather than percentages. I know it’s hard not to focus on grades, but as long as you try your best and work hard, it should translate into good final results.

Actually yes I can definitely identify with that, especially since I always aim pretty high so if I don't quite understand absolutely everything I feel so crazy behind. So practice is key!! 🗝️

Yeah I agree actually about rank being more important than percentages. French will be easier to get a higher rank I think, but chem? that's gonna take a LOT of work  ;D there's a lot of smart ppl in my cohort.

I actually get quite bad anxiety about the whole VCE journal thing, but I’m determined to continue. Just won’t include super specific stuff that could identify me I suppose. Anyone else like that?

Yesss dude! I understand the feeling completely. Trust me when I say you aint alone.

I've moved ahead of my class on content per the advice of my teacher and started looking at redox because as I mentioned before I am just bad at it, and I will need a lot of practice with it.
Yo, with redox, try out the Tyler Dewitt videos on YouTube. He explains that jazz like he breathes it. If you want links, feel free to ask!

I did so good on last year's exams, but I know that doesn't directly translate into year 12 scores, hence why I'm scared about this english mark, and I wanted to ask people's opinions of how much your year 11 scores are a reflection of your capabilities for year 12
Personally speaking, I did trash in year 11. The formative assessments were trial and error. But, I figured out where I went wrong (cough cough studying techniques cough cough), and I did much better in my IA1's. If you did well in year 11, you're more likely to do well in year 12 (is what I think), because you would've nailed the techniques and skills you need; just this time, applying it to different theory.

yes that's literally me too... i'm so paranoid people from my school are gonna know it's me posting and discuss it behind my back  :'(

Thought this was just me too. When I write my journal, I go that's too personal and delete some stuff.  I really hope no one knows who I actually am.

Term 1 Week 4

UPDATE XD

So this'll be a bit short because I have to hurry up and do hw  ::) ::) ::)

This weekend just gone? wow, I actually discovered how to relax. I got my book out and read it for a solid three hours and did I look back? No because it's a rly good book  ;D

In case anyone's interested I'm reading The Younger Wife by Sally Hepworth and would highly recommend. It's got some good, complex themes but at the same time they're not too complex and good for a light read. I spent about half an hour yesterday just laughing at this one scene which was so funny, they were on a date and the guy was just being hilarious. Good stuff!

So having had the time to relax a bit over the weekend I realised that I actually don't mind relaxing! Like before I would do chem hw or smt because that does relax me a bit but I could be READING all these GOOD BOOKS. I won awards last year at school and got $150 in book vouchers so I went on a dymocks rampage and I hadn't really touched any of them until now, but I'm glad I have. It's good incentive to get my act together and study so I have time to read lolllll.

-

I also have a sPeSh TeSt tomorrow which I am semi-prepared for. I did the preparation tasks over the weekend and went ok with those but I still feel like I need more prep. Have to keep reminding myself it's not a SAC  >:(
At this point I'm just gunna wing it. I've accepted that I definitely won't be getting the scores in spesh that I was last year (mid-high 90's) and can probably aim for 70's and be happy. It takes the pressure off a bit having a bit less of a goal. Don't get me wrong, I still want a good ATAR but from what I've heard it's a mean feat to pull a raw 35 so I will be aiming for that  ;D

Any past spesh students plz come at me with advice or just the experience you had. Don't feel like I really know what I'm supposed to be doing rip.

As for chem, that's going really well, I got my class quizzes back and got 100 on all of them so that was encouraging. My SAC is in week 6 and I'm going to try and do as well as I can. (well duh but like I guess aim for high 90's? Idk if I can pull that off but we'll see).

I feel like I can only really start to be realistic about scores once I start getting some SAC marks back to gauge what level of effort I need to be putting in, or if my study methods are working. Apparently we'll also get our Creatives back for English this week so stay tuned! I'll either be crying or eating cake to celebrate my first SAC mark.

Just realised this has turned into a looong update. Once I started going I couldn't stop  ;D guess that's the beauty of a platform like this.

Hope you guys are doing ok! What do other people do to relax? Feel like I need some ideas now  ;D ;D

Thanks for reading as usual fam!

Don't feel like I really know what I'm supposed to be doing rip.
don't worry, i feel the same  :-[ spesh can be the bane of my existence at times. from what I've heard, everyone says the best thing to do is practise as often as possible/looking for patterns in the questions that vcaa asks. idk if that makes sense. for me personally i also find it helpful to just read (and sometimes annotate) the textbook content before it is covered in class so i have some idea of what's going on before my teacher explains it. idk if that's helpful
Hope you guys are doing ok! What do other people do to relax? Feel like I need some ideas now  ;D ;D
for me i find playing my instrument (guitar) helps me to stop thinking about school for once in my life lol  :P also having a routine before bed is really good for relaxation too. e.g. a bit screen free time before sleeping to help switch off, having a hot drink, reading for a bit... those are some things that work for me anyways!

Term 1 Week 5

General

So I didn't go to school today because I was exposed to covid over the weekend. I decided to take a day off as a precaution because of the incubation period and all that. I think it's around 3 days (exposure was Saturday) so if I test negative in the morning I will go to school. I just really don't want to give it to anyone at school because there's a lot of SAC's coming up for a few subjects and it would suck if people missed them because I gave them covid.

Moving on!

I finished The Younger Wife by Sally Hepworth (✰✰✰✰) and I'm onto Take Me With You When You Go by David Levithan and Jennifer Niven. Reading is relaxing  ;D

English

So I didn't quite get the 30/30 I wanted on my Creative SAC, but 29/30 is pretty close so I'm not complaining. I was pretty amazed that I got it and so happy  ;D ;D ;D
It was almost like, "I can actually do this!" and made me feel a lot less scared for Year 12, because at least now I have a bit of an indication of how much work = what sort of mark. I put in a decent effort for my creative and really made sure I communicated with my teacher on how to improve, and ultimately her feedback was crucial (as is often the case with teachers), so I'm really happy with a mark like that so early on.

Spesh

I had a topic test on tuesday and got 82% which I was pretty happy with! Although it was nowhere near close to my Year 11 average, I'm reminding myself that that was Year 11, which seems worlds away now. Year 12 is totally different, especially with spesh and methods, where the tests are no longer asking you questions that could be from a textbook, but instead exam-style questions where sometimes 'where to begin' is the hardest part. I must say I made the dumbest mistake on the test by factoring tan^2(x) out of an expression and not leaving the factor in there. Like just dividing it with no reason. If I'd instead subbed in a trig rule or something I would've got the right answer, but no I was like DiViDe ThE wHoLe ExPrEsSiOn By TaN^2(x). You learn!

Chem

Is so fun rn. I'm over the fact that my teacher isn't exactly who I want her to be. It's ok. She is letting me do my own thing in class and providing me with extension work sometimes, so I'm grateful for that. I really look forward to chem these days, partly because I am just LOVING AoS1. Like is anyone else like that??
My only problem rn is Fuel cells, I still don't really remember how to draw them when I'm asked, and my SAC is next week. (fingers crossed I can do it). I understand the basic concepts. I'm starting revision for the SAC with checkpoints, edrolo and the atarnotes topic tests (although... can anyone else comment on which type of data book they are using? The data book I've got doesn't include some heats of combustion that the one they seem to be using does. I'm using the current VCAA data book)

French

I just was about to type: "loving french rn" and then realised that I am actually really enjoying school. French is a particular favourite right now because I did my practice oral SAC last Wednesday and totally winged it and she gave me a VH. I'd spent hours the night before stressing because I hadn't memorised what I wanted to say even though I'd really tried. When I got to school, I found out that some people hadn't even finished figuring out what they were going to say, so my teacher said we could take in our draft. That gave me some confidence and I was much less scared so I put up my hand to go first and I'm glad I did.

I've also been ATTACKING Duolingo with fire these past few weeks. I have nearly a 30 day streak and I'm powering through. I figured the extra vocab practice would be good, and since I have a pretty good grasp of the grammar it's not really a disadvantage to use Duolingo. I think Duolingo is fine for learning a language to some extent, but for many languages there are complex grammar systems that don't really match English and I'm not sure Duo teaches that aspect very well. But don't get me wrong, it is great for learning extra vocab that could be helpful in the exam!! Who knows?

Methods

Don't feel I really need to update methods atm because not much has happened in the last week. We're doing transformations which is good because that's one of my weaker areas and I'm getting some good practice in.

Thanks always guys!! Hope everyone is going well!

Term 1 Week 6 (?)

General?

RANDOM AS HELL AND TOTALLY IRRELEVANT
Does anyone ever just need to

bake

bread?

The strongest urge to make a loaf of damn good focaccia overcame me last night at about 9.30pm. So I went into the pantry and was absolutely devastated when I discovered there was no baker's flour.
I cried.
Mum gave me a hug and goes 'what's wrong??' and I just had to cry and say there's no flour. She patted me on the back.
'There, there. It's 9.30. You have school tomorrow'.
You think that helps???
As soon as I finish my homework tonight I am going straight to the supermarket and getting that goddamn flour.
Because tonight I will make two grand loaves of Lorraine Pascale certified Focaccia.

No one can stop me.

Ok assuming you ignored that  ;D

School is so ugh rn. The weather is absolute shite it's so miserable it's like as soon as autumn hits, the weather gives you the finger and says n o

A very significant proportion of my year level has covid. About 25-30% is the current estimate. Nuts, right? I still haven't got it though. Yet.

Chem

I have my first SAC on Thursday, and I pretty much shat myself when I opened the prac sac my teacher sent. Where did I learn all this?
Like it's in there, in my brain. But I am having so much trouble grasping fuel cells. Actually no scratch that. I understand them completely. But when faced with a question, my brain chucks a hissy fit and just shuts down. off work for the day.

It's not ok.

I've made a revision plan and I'm going to stick to it because I want as close to 100% as I can get. Rn that is not possible, but maybe by Thursday I can get close.

French

Hands down my favourite subject right now, mostly because I'm really improving.

I don't want to say that it's because of Duolingo, but I think the regular practice is good...

I did the Oral SAC last Thursday and imo it went well. Probably not 20/20 but I'm hoping for a 19. There is no grey area in my french cohort, there's either everyone clustered up the top or the bottom. No middle. Rip bell curve  :o

Spesh

We just started calculus and don't get me wrong I'm hella scared but I love calculus like it just makes sense (although I've been told that will change XD)

Learning like the chain rule and product rule, quotient rule etc. I didn't do 3/4 methods in Y11 so I be learnin that stuff new. I don't think not doing methods 3/4 last year was a huge disadvantage. I'm enjoying both meth and spesh this year.

Metho

We did a test on Friday and it was so hard I was not expecting it to be that hard!!! There were some weird as parameters stuff which tripped everyone up and usually I'm fine but not this time... I took forever to finish it. Here I was being all high and mighty but really I'm just like everyone else.

I'm ok with that though  :)

English

Not feeling great with Eng atm. I usually love ALA but I can't seem to get my essays above 80% ish and I don't really understand why. My teacher says I need to improve my expression, but the only way to do that is practice... ughhhhhh....

We did a prac SAC today though which was surprisingly ok... although I definitely botched the intro. The SAC is next Wednesday :(

---

Oh well thus ends another update. It was a bit half-assed I know, but I really need to finish my homework so I can
make
that
bread.

My YLC said we are nearly a third into year 12??? Is this true??? Can anyone plz confirm?

I hope you're all going ok with everything  :) :) :)

- Lemur

Tiny mini like super stressing wassupdate

Ok so I got my english practice sac back today and pretty much shat myself. 7/10
I wanted a 10. I was hoping for one.
So that's the biggest wake-up call ever that I definitely needed. I need to get my shit together pronto. I've got a week to get my essays up to 9.5-10/10 standard, and I'm gonna do it. I am determined to not let this slip past me. I got 10/10 for my Y11 exam, so I have the skills. I have not put in nearly enough work for english so I'm glad I am realising this now and not friday or smt. I need to practiceeee. I probably also need to eat better food and sleep better tbh  ;D.

(I guess that means not just focaccia for breakfast)

By the way BOTH loaves of that were gone by Tuesday night. I now have a strong urge to make coffee muffins.
There was a time in my life where I put so much instant coffee into a batch of muffins that there was about 2 shots of coffee equivalent per muffin. They were strong but they were SO GOOD.
OMG.

Sorry that was wildly off topic but point is I am determined to do well so I'm going to work really hard this week. Harder. Better. Faster. Stronger.

Thanks for reading guys :)

Term 1 Week 7

Straight to the subjects!

French

I really wanted to just skip straight to french because I just found out about my first SAC mark. It was an Oral Speaking SAC worth 50% of Unit 3?

Anyway I'm harping on about it because I got 100% and I was so excited and happy. French is one of my favourite subjects and it feels so good to have done well on the first sac.
I did the Oral SAC last Thursday and imo it went well. Probably not 20/20 but I'm hoping for a 19. There is no grey area in my french cohort, there's either everyone clustered up the top or the bottom. No middle. Rip bell curve  :o
^^ Guess I was about right

Sorry for going on about it guys but I'm really proud of myself on this one. I feel like that's ok.

Enough about french  ;D

English

I have my ALA SAC tomorrow...

I've definitely come a long way since my prac SAC (7/10), my teacher sent through some feedback that I was happy with, but I don't know what else there is to do rn, I'm just going to go through all of her feedback and make some notes, as well as practising integrating some higher-level vocab into sentences. Also practicing intros. I seem to always focus too much on the author's underlying agenda and not how it fits into the context of the piece.

Anyway so that SAC is tomorrow and I'm shitting myself. I am really hoping for a 9 or a 9.5 (apparently its marked out of something more than 10 so I might be able to get higher than a 9. Don't wanna get my hopes up though). Realistically, I know I can pull off an 8 or an 8.5, but I don't want to lose the good rank spot I have in my cohort. My teacher says it's not the end of the world though if I don't get a 9. She reckons the exam is way more important which is encouraging (I like to procrastinate).

Chem

Another big one because we did our first SAC worth 50% of U3 on Thursday. Apparently we'll get results by the end of next week. I'm really nervous because a few people were saying that there was something wrong with one of the balancing equations qns but I didn't think there was...

I worked pretty hard for that SAC so my hopes are between 95-100, but I'll be pretty happy with 90+

Anyway that's enough from me. I hope you're all doing ok :)

bruh I'm not kidding coffee muffins

Literally just wack instant coffee in the recipe. I usually put tonnes in so I have 2 shots per muffin.

It's good for when I get lazy and can't be bothered making a coffee in the morning, coz I can just grab a couple of muffins and be  8) 8) 8)

Makes a good recess too if you need some caffeine  ;D

Term 1 Week 8 (are you kidding me rn)

General

Where did all the time go??? Everything just creeps up on you and now we are almost done term 1 and I'm like sorry hold up what.

I am (was, actually) super stressed because I did not understand any of AoS2 of chem and I was really sad about english because I messed up my ALA sac. I haven't got the mark back for it, but I don't want it back. It was a shocking sac and I definitely underperformed. I have no idea whether to expect a 60 or an 80. I guess we'll see !! (Prediction: 75% plz be wrong)

Spesh was alright, after some practice I'm not finding differentiation too bad. I'm just slow with it.

Chem, well idrk. I was really struggling with reaction rates and equilibrium until about 5 minutes ago when something clicked in my brain and now I think I get it. Emphasis on 'think'.

French is still my favourite subject. I hit a 50 day streak on Duolingo and they gave me free Plus for 3 days  ;D so I'm just gonna spam lessons to make good use of it. I have no idea when the SAC is, but I think my listening has improved (I hope it has).

That's all for now guys because I need to go to bed so I can get up at 5:30 to do...

chem!!

:) thanks always for reading as usual, I hope you're all having an ok time of it. If all else fails just bake coffee muffins. That's what I'll be doing.

Term 1 Week 9

General

It's fair to say I have sub-zero motivation. It's the end of the term nearly, so I know that pretty much everyone is feeling unmotivated (or not, I have no idea at this point), but I am SO hanging out for these holidays. I'm scared that I'm close to burnout, and I got sick over the weekend, so is my body tryna tell me something..? Who knows...

So I haven't been to school since Friday because I'm sick. I haven't really been able to get much work done (at all) and I'm freaking out because I really don't want to be behind, especially in spesh because I missed the double today.

On the other hand though, I think the break has been absolutely necessary. Yes, I hate being cooped up in my room, but like I got through a solid 100 pages of The Mother-In-Law today which was really good. I need to keep up reading because it's the only way I'll stay sane in Year 12.

Also I watched a really good movie on Sunday, it's called I Lost My Body. It's a french movie (on netflix) and I really liked it, although I'm struggling to explain to people why it resonated with me so much. I'm still tryna figure it out, maybe I need to watch it again.

Chem

Update!! I got my AoS1 SAC results back... 48/50 - 96%

I was quite happy with that. It may not put me rank 1 but I don't think that matters for now. I worked really hard for that SAC and I am really proud of that result. Unfortunately I have another SAC next Wednesday for AoS2 (Part 1) which sucks because I still struggle to do equilibrium calculations with the ICE tables although I am getting there! It's a slow process. I did a past sac yesterday and got 88%, so I can see which areas need improvement, and target those before I start really hammering through past SACs.

English

Tbh I have really struggled with english so far this year. The creative SAC went really well, but my ALA went shite and I DO NOT want to see the score for that. Ever.

I'm struggling a lot with Rear Window, although I feel better about it this week than I did last week because I spoke to my teacher, and she gave me some useful advice. I wasn't really sure how I should think of the movie as a whole, but I think I get it now. I'm going to write up some summaries and make a viewing log for it when I feel a bit... less shite.

Spesh

We did a test on differentiation and I got 80% which I am happy with. It's not the best score it could've been, I guess I'll need the paper back to figure out where I went wrong. Our first SAC is soon and I'm slightly terrified.

That's my little update for now! I'm probably going to try and catch up on all the work I've missed because I've been sick now, which won't be fun but I'll get through it and then read ma book :)

Thanks as always guys

Term 2 Week 7

General

Wow! Long time no see  ;D, Y12 got crazy omg so much has happened.

To condense it... I got covid and then some other horrible virus, possibly the flu so I have been away from school for weeks. My procrastination has hit an all-time high, but I'll probs be back at school tomorrow so I'm actually feeling alright. I applied for early entry to ANU to study politics, so literally everything is crossed come 5th September that I will get an offer.

Subject updates!!

Methods

I literally only got this back today, but I got 98% on my first methods sac which puts me equal rank one I literally cannot believe it. I actually cried this afternoon when I found out because I found the sac really difficult and I almost didn't finish, and I came home from school the day of the sac crying (also with covid... although that was discovered later in the evening), so to say I am relieved would be the biggest understatement ever.

Chem

Currently doing our extended practical investigation. I was sick for the actual prac itself but my partner is next-level smart, so even though the science department did not know how to use the multimeter (we did electrolysis and measured the current) she still managed to do it and it all went ok.

English

I got my ALA mark from last term back... 90%, so although it's not quite what I needed I am absolutely not complaining because I put a decent effort into it and I think 90 is fine. I have my text response SAC on Wednesday so not looking forward to that, although I am really enjoying Rear Window. I appreciate Hitchcock's symbolism and commentary on society more than anything I think, but also the exploration of the human condition. I'm into that stuff, so lucky me I guess :)

Spesh

First SAC - 72%. It's below the class average (74%) but at this stage I'm satisfied because I know I can do better on the next one (although it is calculus so idrk how the hell I think I'm gonna pass that one but we'll see). I struggle a bit with applications of anti-diff like the flow questions and stuff I just can't seem to be able to set up my equations right but I'm getting there.

French

I haven't got my T1 SAC back yet (because I've been away) but the class average is not good. The highest kids in my class are getting 70s and 80s and I'm so scared for mine (apparently highest Listening Section mark was 13/20, dear Lord, please let that be me). I am (to the best of my knowledge given we've had two more sacs since the first) rank one, so I suppose if I maintain that then I'll be fine, but gee french creeps up on you if you don't put the work in.

I've read way more books than I should've these past few months. Since my last post I've read 11. Currently onto Fortune Favours the Dead, which I thought I would get into a lot faster but I think it's just because I'm stressed. I'm going to try to keep up this journal now because it will be a good thing to reflect on once year 12 is done !!!!

Thanks for reading as always!!
