i know lots about the o-camps and i have been on alot of camps myself during my 1 year at uni so far HAHA
so first let me just say it doesnt matter which degree you do to go to which camp, they all accept kids from any degree.
o camps in general: they are very very rowdy affairs. i first wanna say that no one is forced to do anything in fact i've been on camps that offer 'dry' groups for people that dont want to drink alcohol (in their team activities at least). however, most of the activities are alcohol related. therell be stuff like get to know you games where you play 2 truths and a lie and if someone catches the lie you have to take a huge swig of goon and shit like that. you're never forced to do anything really, but if you go on a camp with the 'no alcohol' option and you DONT join the no alcohol group, you will be very very very heavily peer pressured to drink because you are literally playing drinking games in your groups. ive heard that camps without the no alcohol option are alot less peer pressurey which is good. so you dont have to worry really. these camps for ALOT of these people are their first times drinking, first times away from home for an extended period, and first exposure to uni life. there are some people that go absolutely crazy because of all the pent up stuff their whole life HAHA. but overall they are very very friendly and very very warm affairs and you'll make HEAPS of friends, not just in your group/cabin but just random people. because everyone is drunk its very easy to make friends. although sometimes you can be friends with someone for a whole night and the next day they dont remember anything past 5pm and you met them at 6pm sooo LOL i didnt drink much at all on my first o camp and i still had an awesome time.
im not gonna tell any actually stories because they are all ridiculously crazy and identifying LOOOL but yes they are just as rowdy as you have heard, maybe even crazier. its good though because these camps are one of the few situations where you can have so many people in one area drunk and having a good time without virtually 0 violence or malice bc everyone is also there to make friends.
as for the different camps. theyre all rowdy and similiar but there are some small differences. the arts o camp tends to create the strongest friends and friendship groups that last for ages (in broad terms) which might be because how their activities and groups are structured. science camp is one of the biggest ones in terms of numbers and is really balanced. probably one of the rowdier camps with lots of fun events. eng camp from what i hear is just a shit load of drinking but maybe someone else can chime in. cant comment on biomed/comm but commerce tends to be the most exclusive one and if you do commerce you make lots of good friends in your course and for later year networking in there. not going to comment on any of the society ones because they change quite drastically each year
if i could only go to one i would go to arts just because its the easiest way to guarantee to make the best friends. unless you have friends going on other ones in which case go with them LOL
