Routine/structured dancing versus informal/freestyle

Dancing is not something I feel at ease doing - I overthink and can be pretty anxious rather than just "going with whatever" and feeling relaxed. However, (imo) dancing where there is a specific set routine is much less stressful than when there isn't.

If there's a routine then there's a known right set of actions, whereas without a routine there is no guidance and it's hard to know if you're "doing it right"; however, I have recently learnt that some people find unstructured/freestyle dancing more fun and less anxiety inducing than having a routine.

So my question is, which one do you prefer & why?

Definitely freestyle. I think it's more about the setting than the actual dance though. If it's choreographed, I'm probably being forced to do it, which I hate. If it's freestyle then it means I'm vibing already

Choreographed dancing = chore

Freestyle dancing = expression of happiness

Freestyle for sure. I always like to change up my dancing kind of style to suit the people I'm with and the type of music. Sure, forced can be fun sometimes, but if you just don't know the moves by heart, then it can lose its joy. However, when you know a certain dance well and do it with a group, I find that fun as well. But I always prefer freestyle ;D

I like both.

Which one you choose, however, depends on the context (e.g. you can't dance freestyle for a concert or competition, and you are unlikely to have a pre-choreographed dance when you're dancing for fun at a party).

There are pros to both. You can't go wrong with freestyle, and you can't exactly make a mistake. If you stuff up on a choreographed dance then people will be able to tell, you get anxious, but with experience, you'll learn to cover it up and keep going so it doesn't appear as a mistake (except seasoned dancers who could probably recognise the mistake). I guess you could not make mistakes through practice, but sometimes they can happen. Also, the lack of structure in freestyle can make for quite a sloppy dance, albeit fun. It really depends though.

Both are really fun and entail different experiences!

The only dancing I know is:

→ "Come on, it'll be fun, you'll love it!"
→ "I assure you I won't."
→ "Sure you will!"

^That on repeat.

But if I had to choose, would prefer freestyle because deep down, I GOT MOVES. 💃💃💃

I agree with you, Bri. Absolutely detest dancing and have no natural rhythm, so the only way I could even remotely comfortably do something is with a prescribed set of moves to peform. As we all know, life would be nicer if everything had a recipe to it ;)

You'll be happy to know that we've decided to have a dance party for the next AN meetup! (with a choreographed dance for Bri, of course).

Overall prefer choreographed than freestyle but tbh it might be a reflection of my anxiety. But all it all it depends on who I'm with and the vibe.

Speaking of dancing, do any of you watch Les Twins or Ayo and Teo dance videos on Youtube? I find them to be some of the best Freestyle dancers out there. However, I feel Ayo and Teo are more suited to Hip Hop dancing.
