Its ok, I managed to find it!!

The book is called 'Wish' and is written by Felice Arena. If anyone wants to read it, here is a synopsis:

"Set in rural Australia, it tells the story of Seb, a simple minded boy whose brother told him that if he could manage to catch 100 airplanes, then he would be able to make a wish. To 'catch' an airplane, one must make a triangle with their the two thumbs and pointers, move the triangle so that the plane is smack in the middle and clap. Since a plane is rare in Seb's town, he sets out on an adventure to Sydney to catch one hundred planes. His wish? To cure his mother from her cancer."

When I read this post, it got me instantly thinking of the story of Sadako, which you can find books titled something along the lines of Sadako and the Thousand Cranes. It's based on a true story and, despite it being about a Japanese girl, there are English versions. There's a statue in commemoration to the real Sadako and other innocent child victims that can be found in Hiroshima.

Mm, I remember my grade 2 teacher reading that story to my class. Unfortunately, I was far too young then to understand and link Sadako's illness to what happened at the end of World War II.

Oh, I think I have heard of that story before! I found a link to someone reading it aloud on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKZLyCck8Nk.
There are other videos with the rest of the chapters.

Thanks for sharing!
