Hello there

I'm considering UMEP History and Philosophy of Science for 2021. Has anyone ever done this before? If so, what was your experience?

Also as a general question, how hard is it to average 90+ in UMEP subjects (since apparently that's equivalent to a 50 study score at VCE level?)

Hi there! I do UMEP maths - not the same subject but the structure is quite similar. I'd say that from my experience, and from my friends' experience, it's quite easy to get 70+ and 80+ (ie. 4.0 and 4.5), but 90+ is extremely difficult and would usually put you in the top like 20 in the state. Someone from my class just scraped above 90 and they got money for it and everything lol

I've managed to get 80s and 90s for most of my stuff doing umep maths. Unless you're going for like a 99.95, there's really no difference between a 3 and a 5 in your atar. So the most important thing is to make sure you're passing and understanding the content and then you can focus on prioritising your other subjects that will actually make your top 4.

2020-English [38], Chemistry [43], Spesh [43], UMEP maths [4.5], ATAR: 99.05

Hey! I did UMEP Philosophy this year, not exactly the same subject but I'm assuming the structure and coursework will be relatively similar. Not sure what kind of readings will be set for your subject, but if they are primary sources, then I would say the hardest part is actually comprehending and digesting the content. However, if you're someone like me who likes to take shortcuts, there are plenty secondary sources on the internet (summaries, reviews, etc) that can make your life a whole lot easier in this regard.

Assessment wise, for Philosophy it's pretty much impossible to get 90+, I've heard you actually need to produce 'original' philosophy and critique which is pretty difficult given that the primary sources you're supposed to comment on are couple of hundred years old w/ thousands (if not more) of articles of existing commentary. Don't know about your subject specifically though, but I doubt the standards will be significantly higher/lower.
