Tips and Advice for Methods 1/2?
« on: September 20, 2019, 05:05:37 pm »

I am doing methods 1/2 next year. I have some questions  :)

1. What are the most difficult topics in methods 1 and 2?

2. On a scale of ten (10 very hard), how would you rate methods 1 and 2 in terms of difficulty?

3. Any advice, tips or tricks or things to be aware of?

4. What would you think of doing methods 1 and 2 in year 9 (i am not, but ik others are)?.

1. What are the most difficult topics in methods 1 and 2?
Difficult topics: Calculus and Probability
2. On a scale of ten (10 very hard), how would you rate methods 1 and 2 in terms of difficulty?
Difficulty - 6/10 for someone who skipped a year level
3. Any advice, tips or tricks or things to be aware of?
Don't spend all your time on a certain question (on tests) and attempt to grasp on all concepts as they will be also prevalent in 3/4
4. What would you think of doing methods 1 and 2 in year 9 (i am not, but ik others are)?.
I have no opinion. If you have the mathematical ability to do so successfully, congratulations. If your school allows you, well; I wish I went there. Unfortunately, my school doesn't allow this but still has impressive results. If you were planning to do 3/4 in Year 10 then you'll need to be very prepared.  What I've learnt is that completing the most subject early (before Year 12) is not ideal, but achieving the best in each is instead.

1. imo circular functions and calculus to an extent
2. 5/10
3. know your basics
4. doable but don't recommend it (year 10 minimum imo)

1. What are the most difficult topics in methods 1 and 2?
This will vary from person to person. For me, I found matrices to be the most difficult in 1/2, though thankfully it doesn't have too much overlap with the matrices knowledge needed in 3/4.

2. On a scale of ten (10 very hard), how would you rate methods 1 and 2 in terms of difficulty?
Again, subjective. For me it was a 7. I find 3/4 easier.

3. Any advice, tips or tricks or things to be aware of?
1. Be on top of your work. Ask if you have any questions / misunderstandings immediately (this should be for all your subjects)
2. Do not stress if you find one topic to be incredibly difficult.
3. Know how to use your CAS the earlier the better.
4. Methods 1/2 is quite a big jump from year 10 maths so make sure you have a strong foundation in your year 10 knowledge before moving on to methods.

4. What would you think of doing methods 1 and 2 in year 9 (i am not, but ik others are)?.
If you can handle the work, go for it.

1. What are the most difficult topics in methods 1 and 2?
For me, it was probability. It's vastly different than it is in Units 3/4, and you actually have to think hard for 1/2 probability

2. On a scale of ten (10 very hard), how would you rate methods 1 and 2 in terms of difficulty?
4-5/10, units 3 and 4 even less. 1/2 was harder than 3/4.

3. Any advice, tips or tricks or things to be aware of?
If you want to do well in Maths, you MUST know the concepts like the back of your hand. If you see a question, you should be able to instantly link it to concepts and the relevant formulas or concepts should pop up immediately. This is the most underlooked part of Maths in general I believe, and it is why people don't hit raw 40s. You also must be incredibly efficient with your usage of your CAS, so know where certain functions are, the menu, etc, etc.

4. What would you think of doing methods 1 and 2 in year 9 (i am not, but ik others are)?
Pointless. Once you get to Year 11 or 12, you'll most likely have forgotten the topics unless you constantly revise. For me, I also find it easier to do some subjects when I'm older (think its a maturity thing),so probably more beneficial to do 1/2 in Year 11. Unless the people you know are absolute geniuses on the road to get 99.95, then uhh, yes

1) Based on the results achieved later at VCE, I would rate the topics as follows (in decreasing order of hardness):
(i) Hardest: Transformations
(ii) Analytical geometry (while the topic does not seem that hard, for some reason many students fail badly at VCE tests)
(iii) Probability
(iv) Integration
(v) Differentiation
(vi) Easiest: Functions
2) Subjective.
3) Study the topics thoroughly, master CAS and go diligently through Cambridge Checkpoints for 1/2 (or a similar collection of problems).
4) I agree with jkay_ : you will forget most of 1/2 by the time you take your VCE test (unless you take it in year 10, which is unlikely).
