Title: Applying Interstate?
Post by: kxyaa on September 28, 2020, 10:29:07 pm
I know it's really personal preference but is it a good idea to apply to universities all around the country for Med, even if it could potentially mean moving interstate for 6/7+ years?

Hey! I strongly recommend it! It really does increase your chances of getting into undergrad med :)
Also, don't worry too much about how intimidating it is to move interstate away from home. Eventually, you'll have to gain some independence and moving interstate for a degree you love is a great way to do so! You build so many life skills and make many friendships along the way. This country is amazing in the sense that there's always one form of support whether it be online or face-to-face so there'll always be help one way or another so you'll never have to worry too much.

Unless there are significant extenuating personal circumstances, you should apply interstate (i.e. every medical school in Australia that you meet requirements for) if you're really interested in medicine. Medical schools across the country generally have a fair amount of interstate students that will be in the same position as you, and there's a lot of support given from faculties and med student societies for those who aren't from the area.

Not trying to scare you but do keep in mind that medicine is a rather disruptive career and moving around a lot (and interstate) in postgraduate work and specialist training programs is expected for the majority of doctors.
