First time using YouTube!! I think I had it on private (where only I could view it) -should be working now!! :D
Yep, the link works now!

And I agree with you on music theory- theory is so boring; I would fall asleep whenever my piano teacher would get me to do an exercise on theory!

Wow! :) What was your friend's name?
Michelle was my friend's name! (Pretty sure she studies Media specialising in PR and advertising at UNSW).

Mid-Sem Break
Didn’t actually get as much done this week as I had wanted to. I spent a lot more time procrastinating then doing any assessments or studying. I started one of my assessments but only did around 230 words out of the 500.

I ended up going to the SOAP (Wind symph/orchestra’s society) bushwalk to Bundeena and it was pretty good. My peer mentor is the president of the society and she led the walk so I knew her and another first year fairly well but met three other people in the ensembles. It was an 8km return walk to wedding cake rock and a beach. We went swimming afterwards at both the beach at the walk (which had a really bad undertow though) and the beach at Bundeena (which was a lot calmer). Here’s a link to some pictures of the day!

We had Greek Easter at my cousin’s house on Sunday and it was a great day with some really good Greek food (I like the pastitso- Greek lasagne, and souvlaki).

Week 6!
Monday
I started with my music reinvented lecture today that was mainly on the music of Stravinsky and Bartok. I prefer this lecture to some of my others as we listen to lots of different musical excerpts throughout and it isn’t just the lecturer talking about stuff on the PowerPoint. I had to do an assignment for this unit that was due today (Thursday) which was a mini 400-500-word bio on Debussy’s early life and how this affected his subsequent musical compositions.

In the tute, straight after the lecture we talked about a listening test we have coming up and did a bit of practise for it. For this test, we need to be able to recognise any piece from our listening list (of 17 pieces that are 20min long) and write the name of the piece, movement, composer, genre, and 25 words about technique/historical significance of the piece. I’ve made a table with some of my friends so we can do this easier but it sounds like a lot of work.

Afterwards, I had the theory lecture and while I understood some of it (on some of the minor keys/chords), it’s still not very interesting. It’s also one of the classes I wish was recorded so I could go over what I didn’t understand well the first time (but It’s one of my 2 courses that isn’t).

Tuesday/Wednesday
I started with my education lecture at 12, and really just zoned out .. almost the whole time. I’m hoping that the education units next sem are a lot better because this one is just really slow and boring. I was honestly just switching through tabs for around 85% of the time. The tute on Wed wasn’t any better and we spent almost all the time going over 5 definitions from the lecture & textbook.  I got my marks back for the article analysis today (Tuesday) though and ironically it’s been my best mark at uni so far (80%)!

Thursday
Today, I started with the aural choir (singing). We mainly just did warm ups, and then some pieces with four-part harmony. The pieces themselves aren’t very exciting but it does sound pretty good with us all together. It’s my second last week of peer mentoring so after the studio, we all met up at Cuco Cubana to have lunch together! We doing trivia against the other groups next week and having a breakfast the week after. Then, I had my theory tute, which was revision on what we had done in the last two lectures (on suspensions, and minor scales/chords). We have a test for this in my tute next week that I really need to study for.

Also, just checked and I think I have to be at uni all five days next sem  :'(.

Wind Sympth concert
Tomorrow, I have my first concert for the Wind symphony, called Suites and Treats. It’s at Clancy auditorium (where we normally rehearse) at uni from 7. The orchestras playing the 1st half and then were playing the 2nd. I’m also ushering with some of my 3rd clarinet friends at the start of the concert, basically just handing out programs and making sure everyone has a ticket. It should be heaps of fun!! :D
Hope everybody had a great week!! :D

21/4/18
Week 7
Were finally halfway through the semester which is good because I’m starting to really want more holidays (doesn’t help that my siblings are off at the moment. However, I’m starting to get into my more major assessments now which are a lot more work than before.

Monday
For my music reinvented lecture, we started with the music of Shostakovich & Prokofiev. We then went into the music of Germany between the wars, when Hitler was coming to power and looked at the composers Hindemith and Weill. We had a reading to do for the tute today on musical signs and meaning (such as index, symbols and icons), and I was the only person in the class finish it (on the train in the morning). It was a little annoying as he asked me to summarise it to the class and I couldn’t really remember it well enough as I’d read it at 8 in the morning.

For this subject, we have an essay due next week on Wednesday on Impressionism and Symbolism. It’s a 2000 word essay worth 45% and the essay question itself is really wordy. I also got told that some of my sources need to be more sophisticated/uni level in my last assignment but it really difficult to read heaps of dense academic sources (I’ve had to look up the meaning of words quite a few times). I haven’t been very motivated to do this essay even though I really like history. It’s Saturday now and I’m still only just finishing researching the essay!

Afterwards, I had the theory lecture which was on modulation, tonicisation and secondary dominant chords. I left still feeling a bit confused so it’s definitely something that I’ll need to go over. We have a test next week on what we’ve learnt which I’ll really need to study for as well.
Tuesday/Wednesday
I started with my performance Lab masterclass at 9am! The masterclasses are something that I’m still not used to-in a way it’s like a private studio lesson but with an audience. So, we had four different piano players and they began by just playing their pieces and then we had a teacher help them improve in certain areas. It was pretty interesting, but then again I have a limited knowledge of piano techniques.

For performance Lab I need to do a workshop next Thursday where I play a piece (I’m doing the 2nd Brahms clarinet sonata 2nd movement) and talk about the history/analysis of the piece. It needs to go for 5-10 minutes and I’m not very good at speeches so I’m a little worried about the talking after the piece. I tried to get piano accompanist for the piece and asked three different groups but everybody was busy but I think I’ve found a backing track that could work!

Afterwards, I had my education lecture which was on culture and cultural identities and talked a lot about multiculturalism within schools. I’m still zoning out and switching in between AN, the lecture slides and Facebook which I never would have done last year at school! For the tute on the Wednesday, we mainly talked about the assessment which is due in around 2 weeks. It is 1800 words and we have to do an analysis of 3 different journal articles/book chapters, and talk about a specific school that addresses the needs of students in 2 different areas (I’m probably doing my school).

For Wind Sympth, we got some new pieces for our rehearsals which we’ll work through for our next concert but they are pretty difficult at the moment.
Thursday
We had the singing studio again and just started with some warmups and scales. Our tutor then split us up into groups of around 20 people, and we have to learn a song in our smaller groups. It’s an older song called ‘If ye love me’ and we need to perform it to the class in two weeks. I’m still not very confident with the singing really.

We then had a test in my harmony theory tute, which was easier than I expected so I’m really hoping it goes well. We had to identify chords that were in a passage as well as some non-harmonic tones (such as neighbour/passing/escape tones and suspensions).

I then stayed back at uni for the artssoc toga party pres mainly to meet some of my friends from arts camp. The togas we needed to wear were a disgusting fluro/bright pink colour and looked pretty weird. The pres itself was pretty lame and not as good as what it had been hyped up to be. I mainly talked with my friends from camp and it really good to see them again. The bus that I was meant to get home came about 10 minutes late and there was trackwork on my line, so my dad had to pick me up at Revesby and it ended up taking 2 hours to get home.

Week 8
Stress, anxiety, assessments, AHHH!!
I only had uni for 2 ½ days this week but it still dragged on a lot and was more stressful then last week.

Monday
Spoiler
I started with my music reinvented lecture which was an intro to ethnomusicology. Ethnomusicology is the study of music in its cultural context and it’s a mix of ethnography and musicology. We were listening to some non-traditional music that sounded really weird and different to us.

For this unit, we had a 2000-word essay due on Wednesday night about Debussy, Symbolism and Impressionism. I left it a bit late, and had two really late nights (1am and 2am) because of it which was pretty stressful.

After the reinvented tute, I had a test during my theory lecture. I hadn’t really spent heaps of time studying for it because I started my essay that weekend. The test was more difficult then I expected though and I wasn’t able to finish the analysis in the 50 minutes.

Tuesday
Spoiler
Our education classes were cancelled this week because of the public holiday. Blasonduo and I, have an education assessment due next Tuesday, which is an analysis of three different articles and a school. At the moment, I’ve done 1200 words out of the 1800.

I only needed to be at uni from 4-6 for wind symph today. The new pieces that we got the other week are still pretty hard so I’m going to have to do some work on them for next week. Next week were doing sectional rehearsals, so it’s just going to be all of the clarinets together.

Thursday
Spoiler
I went to sleep at 2am this morning because I needed to finish my essay and then start my document for my performance workshop today- so I was pretty tired at uni. I started uni at 8:45 because I had an end of peer mentoring breakfast. We ended up staying there until 11 talking and eating (they had really good hash browns)!

At 11, I had the singing studio and we’re in groups at the moment. We have to perform a song in two weeks to the rest of the class. At the moment, we haven’t been able to completely run through the song once. Afterwards, I had the theory tute which was pretty boring again (we going were going through secondary dominant chords).

After the theory tute, I had my performance workshop which had to go for 5-10 minutes. I played the Brahms 2nd sonata 2nd movement and then had to talk about its history and analysis. As, I was about to start my workshop I realised the cord I would need for the backing track/stereo wasn’t in the room so we had to go down to the first level and get one from the tech guys.  I think the performance/workshop ended up ok, but I was feeling really nervous during & after it as we had to perform to our studio group.

16/5/18
Week 11 (only 2 weeks left!! :D)
At the moment, I’m definitely feeling ready for the holidays!

Assignments coming up:
-I have an ethnomusicology test worth 10% for Reinvented on Monday and then all of my assessments for the class will be done!
-I have an auralia theory test later this week for M&S and a composition due on the 25th of May.
-2000-word research report for Education due on the 5th of June.
-For performance, I still 70% left: my ensemble part-checking (wk 13) and my performance exam (wk15-exam period). We were meant to book our exams this morning except there were 2 different technical glitches, so I think we need to book tomorrow.

I skipped out on half of my education lecture this week because I had lunch with my little brother after he had a doctor’s appointment at the kid’s hospital. The lectures are still really boring and half of the time he reads off the slides so I’m not really missing much. We have someone from the department of education coming next week so that might be more interesting.

Timetable:
At the moment, I need to come in for 4 days next sem. It’s slightly better than this sem (no 1hr days!!) but it’s still not that great.
Timetable

Social Stuff:
Wind Symphony has our 2nd concert Friday next week which should be good! Even the most difficult piece, El Muro is finally starting to come together well! We got our SOAP hoodies on Tuesday, mines dark grey and is really warm! I’m going to a music society/SOAP cruise at the end of week 13, which is around Sydney harbour during vivid!

I’m going to a Phil charity concert tomorrow night at uni with my peer mentoring group which should be pretty good!

On the weekend, I have the metropolitan solo competition with my community band. I’m playing in the U19 Woodwind novice (really ironic that it’s novice, but I’ve never been in the competition before), U19 Woodwind and U19 slow melody. It would be great to get a place but should be a good experience anyway. Then on Sunday, I have an interview for my pioneer pin (which is the highest national award for Girls Brigade) which is also with two of my friends. I’m a bit worried because I am terrible at interviews.

Weeks 4 & 5

Decided to try the vlog format today!!
My First Ever Vlog!!

More on Arts society camp!
I went to camp feeling really nervous as I didn’t really know too many people who were going and what the camp was going to be like. There were 125 other first years, around 20 leaders and other executive members there. Everybody was doing a subject under the faculty of arts and social sciences so it was very varied (e.g media, education, music, criminology, arts). Therefore, there were only three other people doing a music degree there.

The camp was sport themed for this year, and we also had a sports themed Saturday night party where everyone dressed up. We were split into 10 different groups, and did majority of the activities in our teams, (mine was the Beasty Bears). Each team made up a war cry and at the end of the camp there was a competition for 1st, 2nd and 3rd with prizes (We actually got 1st).

The camp mostly consisted of group games and activities in your teams. Some of them were really messy (like sock wrestling on soapy mats, or water fights), while others were based on communication within your teams. We also had a camp dance that we would do whenever we heard the song (‘forget you’). During the camp, we had pale blue camp shirts that we would wear for the majority of the time.

On the Saturday morning, they woke us up at 7am to do a sports themed bootcamp!  :(  On the Friday night, we had a trivia night in our groups with games in between the questions. Then, on the Saturday night, we had a sports themed party. I’m not a party person (& don’t drink much) so I didn’t really like the party as it was mainly alcohol and dancing and seen by some people as an excuse to get drunk. However, I did talk to a few friends afterwards which was really nice, and helped another friend who was drunk. We ended up going to bed really late both nights and were exhausted by the Sunday.

The camp food (especially the dinners and breakfasts) wasn’t actually really good though, so it was good to go home to nicer food :) .

Overall, I made quite a few friends at camp which was really good!!  :D

Only just catching up, but love the vlog!

Thanks!! :)
He's ok, It was just a checkup appointment. He was really excited about being able to see me for lunch and I brought him a chocolate milkshake. I then gave him a really mini tour of uni (just the music building, my locker and the library). He's really obsessed with books at the moment so he loved the library  :D
