Title: Does higher ATAR = more choices and opportunities?
Post by: JR_StudyEd on June 10, 2019, 06:26:41 pm
Title speaks for itself. If so, in what way does it provide more choice and opportunities? Personally at this stage, having lots of choices when it comes to uni courses is a good thing, but at the same time, it is rather overwhelming.

With a higher ATAR more courses are available and it may also make it easier to transfer into some courses (especially in 1st year).

Another way it's useful is in terms of scholarships and/or gaining access to high achiever programs.

It also makes it easier to advertise yourself to students if you're interested in tutoring.

That being said,  ATAR certainly isn't everything and there are generally other pathways into courses

Hope this helps :)

It will only matter in increments, I think.

The ATAR, though not definitive, makes it significantly easier (as Bri MT has put it), to get into more courses, obtain scholarships and advertise yourself, that is still an impact in the long run, so I'd rather not ignore that.

Beyond that it doesn't matter as much, because there's still a high chance that you'll do very well in the next stage of your life (even with a low ATAR), or to be more pessimistic, a high chance that you'll not do well even with an amazing ATAR, that depends on you.

So should I aim high anyway, regardless of my desired course? I don't have my heart set on anything in particular right now, and I probably won't until university open day season rolls around. I suppose I should aim high, for the sake of building character and self-improvement.

Don't see why not - and you never know what it might lead to! :)

Exactly! I finished up VCE a long time ago and it's getting a little tough to remember exactly what my study scores were because that wasn't what I took away from it. Rather, VCE provides you with an opportunity to put long term effort into something and gain that internal satisfaction. You'll have to sit your VCE exams, so you may as well give it your best shot.
