Is Specialist maths hard?

Hi

I'm a year 10 student and was just wondering if Specialist maths is hard? I go to a selective school and my average maths mark this year is around 50%. I know I definetly need to do methods but I don't know if Specialist maths is too hard. Is it needed for entry into Melbourne Science, Melbourne Biomed or Monash Med?

Thanks

spesh alone isn't necessary for any course that you listed (or even any other course to my knowledge)

The difficult of spesh will really depend on each individual I can't say much about 50% in year 10 because firstly, grades before vce mean hardly anything and also I don't know the difficult of those tests.

I found 1/2 specialist quite odd/abstract because of all the strange inductive proofs and first learning about complex numbers and vectors. Term 1 of unit 3 was also quite difficult I thought with the trigonometry, but it now all seems quite easy after having been exposed to it for enough time. I think it’s auite manageable as long as you enjoy maths and are willing to dedicate slightly more time to it than you would your average subject.

Does it take up more time than Methods?

Depends on how much time you put into methods...!
But normally, yes, I think it would.

Takes up more time than methods, but makes methods easier!

I am in yr 11 and currently doing specialist, and for me, specialist is pretty difficult (but still manageable to do. Also your performance depends on what topic you are doing). If you are doing great in your maths class and you enjoy maths, I think it is good just to try out for unit 1/2 (if you don't like it then you can just drop it and choose something else for 3/4). But if you don't enjoy maths and a bit struggling in your maths class, I recommend not to choose it.
