Title: getting healthy and feeling better in semester two
Post by: caffinatedloz on July 14, 2019, 07:00:22 am
I noticed towards the end of last term I was lacking motivation and energy to do pretty much everything, especially come exam time.  I was happy with my results but I feel as though I could have worked harder. I just want to feel a bit more energetic and set myself up well for VCE, as well as feeling more positive about life in general and spending time doing things I enjoy. I want to set good habits now.

My goals are:
1. To drink 1.5-2L of water a day.
2. To exercise daily: bike-rides, stretching, core workouts ect.
3.  To spend a little more time outside, being creative and reading.
4. To stop snacking after dinner.
5. To cut out all lollies. (My go-to comfort food.)
6. To wear my retainer every night.
7. To take off my makeup more and take better care of my skin.
8. To read a bible passage each day.
9. To stop going on my phone or any other technology in my bed.
10. To keep my room clean (and tidy it every Sunday).
11. To create and maintain positive study habits.
12. To feel more positive and energetic.

I'm starting today... wish me luck!

Day One

1. To drink 1.5-2L of water a day.
I drank almost 2L today. (1.9 I think...)

2. To exercise daily: bike-rides, stretching, core workouts ect.
I did this 6 minute leg workout today. It killed my knees and ankles but felt really good to get back into some fitness stuff!

3.  To spend a little more time outside, being creative and reading.
Outside: I spent about half an hour playing a game with some kids.
Creativity: I made my biology notes look aesthetic. I also spent time working on a scarf I'm knitting.
Reading: I think I'll do some reading before bed.

4. To stop snacking after dinner.
Nothing tonight!  :D

5. To cut out all lollies. (My go-to comfort food.)
None today! That's a win!

6. To wear my retainer every night.
Already brushed my teeth and put it in.

7. To take off my makeup more and take better care of my skin.
I took off my makeup today as soon as I got home and did a face scrub and used a new moisturiser. I also did a lip scrub while I was at it.

8. To read a bible passage each day.
I was doing a bible study with some little kids today from the gospels. Read the same story (Jesus Calms The Storm) in two different books of the bible.

9. To stop going on my phone or any other technology in my bed.
Tick.

10. To keep my room clean (and tidy it every Sunday).
Another tick.

11. To create and maintain positive study habits.
I got up early today to work ahead through some biology content. I also spent all afternoon procrastinating instead of watching the hours of Edrolo I need to.

12. To feel more positive and energetic.
Was not particularly feeling either of those things today. Especially not positivity!

Keen to see how you go!  :D
Which goal do you think will be the hardest?

Keen to see how you go!  :D
Which goal do you think will be the hardest?

Probably, in all honesty, maintaining a positive attitude.

(I mean cutting out lollies, wearing my retainer, keeping my room clean and not using my phone in bed are all going to be fairly difficult as well.)

A lot of the goals I set are things that I've done off and on in the past, so I think trying to make so many habits at once and not simply forgetting or reverting back will be hard.

Honestly think the water one alone will make a huge difference. I really notice when I don't drink enough. Good luck!

Day Two

1. To drink 1.5-2L of water a day.
Honestly think the water one alone will make a huge difference. I really notice when I don't drink enough. Good luck!
Hmmm... I probably just hit 1.5 today. Didn't start sipping water till 3pm, but it did wonders for my headache.

2. To exercise daily: bike-rides, stretching, core workouts ect.
Tried an arm workout but got about a minute through before I gave up. Decided on some stretches instead.

3.  To spend a little more time outside, being creative and reading.
Outside: I spent about half-an-hour outside with some kids as part of our school's community service program.
Creativity: I went through this set of vocal warm-ups!
Reading: Read for ten minutes when I woke up and will read for another ten before bed.

4. To stop snacking after dinner.
Tick.

5. To cut out all lollies. (My go-to comfort food.)
Tick.

6. To wear my retainer every night.
Tick.

7. To take off my makeup more and take better care of my skin.
Took of my makeup. Used my face scrub this morning and a moisturiser in the evening.

8. To read a bible passage each day.
Read Psalm 1 and took notes with my new calligraphy pens and fine liners! ;D

9. To stop going on my phone or any other technology in my bed.
Didn't even think about this. Sat on my laptop in bed today for about an hour or two. But, not while I was meant to be sleeping so that's something!

10. To keep my room clean (and tidy it every Sunday).
Did a bit of work on this as well. Definitely cleaner than when I woke up this morning!

11. To create and maintain positive study habits.
I worked really hard when I woke up to get some Edrolo done and worked hard in class so I didn't get much homework. But I came home and procrastinated all evening. I also missed two classes for community service and have not bothered to find out what I missed.

12. To feel more positive and energetic.
Was feeling fairly positive today, but definitely struggled energy-wise. I snoozed my alarm three times. I also felt quite lethargic all day. (probably just the effect of a full day of school)

9. To stop going on my phone or any other technology in my bed.
Tick.

10. To keep my room clean (and tidy it every Sunday).
Fairly tidy at the minute, but could use a bit of work. Didn't feel like I really had time or energy for it today.

11. To create and maintain positive study habits.
Studied in the library before school, worked hard during class and did a tiny bit this evening. Overall, would have liked to get a lot more done.

12. To feel more positive and energetic.
Felt fairly good today, albeit very stressed. Was volunteering with some real cuties and they certainly lifted my spirits.

Awesome stuff! Building routines like this can be super beneficial. Just don't be too hard on yourself if you have a few days where you don't get as much stuff done on the list as you'd like to ;)

Week 1
I think that I am enjoying this and getting more use to the routine. I think that in the upcoming week I am going to focus on not snacking after dinner. I had a weird week and it involved eating meals at random times.

Overall I feel pretty productive, and I am really happy with the things that I am getting done in the morning.

As these things became like habits and regular parts of my day it was easier to stay consistent.

Also: I plotted my daily ratings from the first week on a graph, and there was a slightly positive trajectory. Let's hope it continues that way!

I also put whether or not I completed each goal into a spreadsheet for each day, and there seems to be a pretty direct correlation between my productivity and my mood. I'm not sure which affects which, but I'm starting to wonder if how productive I affects how I feel and not the other way around.

I'm just really tired today. I worked and volunteered all day and I'm sick and I had a massive day yesterday. Every day this week is going to be massive, so my goal is just to survive. I think that I will try to stick to the water, workout and daily bible reading, but certainly going to cut myself some slack this week.

I don’t debate, but I love watching debates, and arguing really speeds up the digestive system lol. What was the topic?

The topic ended up being "That the media should have no censorship". We were affirmative. I am actually a C Grade debater (Year 10), but as the C Grade team had a bye, I was simply going along to the B Grade debate to be an extra team member to help out.

In secret topic debates you are told the topic and hour before you must speak and (during the prep hour you cannot access any technology, only printed material). Although only three people must speak, you are allowed to have up to five people in the room. I was just a bonus person who worked on writing some arguments for the second speaker and helped with planning out ideas.

:o I like that topic.

Yeah- an interesting topic, but hard to argue the affirmative. Especially as the opposing team built their entire case around keeping Australia's laws exactly as they are.

This is a super good idea! I recommend an app like 30 day ab challenge or similar for your workout goal, as I have personally found it really helpful and because they're usually only quite short: pretty motivating :) To help with staying positive which can be a real challenge around this time of the year, I've benefitted from trying to study with friends or give myself more downtime when I know that I can afford to take sometime off studying.
Hope some of this helps! Good luck with the rest of your year ;D ;D

Unfortunately, a mix of ill health and business has allowed this to fall by the wayside, but I still plan to get back on track. At the minute, my goal is to tidy up my bedroom (which has been getting progressively messier over the past month) in two weeks, while also getting my exercise and water drinking habits back on track. After those two weeks, I'll pick back up where I left off with the long list of daily goals.

I think that I'll post every day and let you know how I've gone with my two important goals.

Today I changed my sheets and generally did a bit of tidying in my room and put together an achievable plan of turning the ridiculous mess into something habitable. In terms of exercise, I did a little running around while I was supervising kids, but nothing particularly strenuous. Once I am able to see my bedroom floor, I should be able to start up my ab workouts again.

Room: tick... well sort of! I made my bed which based on the past couple of weeks is a massive achievement. I also did some other little things, but not as much as I would have liked.

Exercise: I walked around the oval with a friend and then walked home from school (so all up more than an extra hour of wandering).

Water: I didn't count how much I had but I definitely felt a lot better for it!

Okay... soooo....
I have three tests tomorrow and between revising for each of them (as I left things WAY too late), I did not get a chance to do any cleaning. I really need to pick this habit back up and do some more tomorrow.

On a more positive note, I did some walking and some dancing at school today, which I am counting as my daily exercise.

And I can already feel the difference that water is making!

Cleaning: I did what I meant to do earlier in the week. I'm very happy with my progress but still a bit behind where I would like to be.

Exercise: I walk home from school today and around the oval at lunch (25ish minutes), as well as doing a six minute leg workout.

Water: Had heaps today but still had a bit of a headace.

Thanks for the bump Poet! I've been eating sort of healthy (I mean healthy enough for the holidays), and have done sporadic cleaning and study. I have friends coming over tomorrow so I'll have to clean up before then and I have some work that I need to finish by Monday, plus I'm going to lectures on the weekend which should help to motivate me. I've also been drinking lots of water because my headaches and dizziness is a lot worse if I don't so that's always a reminder.

I hadn't been working out at all, but have been on heaps of leisurely walks in some really nice areas. I walked for an hour today around a lake in Ballarat as well as through the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. I realised when I got home that I couldn't put any weight on my bad knee though so I think that is a sign I have not been wearing my orthotics as much as I should over the holidays. Hopefully it will be better soon and I can pick this back up.

Hello everyone,
I'm back again. After a wild couple of weeks, I'm seriously lacking in motivation. At the moment I'm focusing on eating healthily, keeping my study spaces clean (and my room) and studying heaps for exams.

My room looked like a bomb had exploded but at the minute it's looking a little better. I've been eating heaps of healthy foods and they've been giving me lots of energy. I can definitely feel the difference. At the minute I'm trying to do around 15 hours a week of study, homework and exam revision. This is the amount suggested by the school and since I've missed quite a few days I feel like I really need to do this amount to catch up on the work I've missed. Last week I did 13 hours and 25 minutes, an improvement from the 9 hours the week before. I feel like I might finally hit the 15 hours this week so wish me luck!

I'll check back in on Sunday... ;D

Really great actually, thanks for reminding me to update this. I've started a habit tracker with six things on it and that has been super helpful for me.

They are:
- eat healthily
- drink enough water
- do my chores
- workout
- pray and read my bible

So far I've found the healthy eating and working out most effective and I've been losing weight and feeling fantastic! Having a really simple system during exam time has worked for me.

I also started a study tracker and that's been useful. It helps me to see how much time I spend on each subject each week- enlightening.

Do you track digitally or by hand? I used to use a monthly & weekly tracker in my bullet journal but I usually forget after a few months

I track my habits by hand, and study too. (But I transfer the study tracking off of a note on my computer once a week rather than daily.)

With Semester 2 coming to a close, I'm officially closing this thread.

Whist, I haven't been as consistent with posting over this term, some of the habits I started I've still been continuing without too much effort as they've become part of my routine. I've been drinking more water and eating predominantly healthy foods (with occasional treats). I've also been doing more exercise day-to-day and I've been feeling more energised.

I think that I'm going to make an effort over summer to keep building these positive habits. I think that one that I miss the most was the no technology on bed thing as it certainly kept my screen time down. I might try and enforce that more next year when school starts back up. I'm also going to try and restart an ab workout plan.

Thanks so much for everyone who's followed this journey and been so supportive! I appreciate all of the tips, motivation, advice and support. ;D
