What the difference between light and tone?

So my teacher disagrees that light and tone are two separate things but I know I need to know it and I got confused by it in class, so can someone explain the difference?

Haven't done studio art so I might be way off the mark, but here goes:

The study design lists light and tone as different parts of art elements (screenshot attached, or page 11). Unfortunately it doesn't look there are definitions in the study design . From the looking around I did, it seems like tone is the combination of hue (or chroma) and value (or light) to create a tone that represents the hue at a certain level of light. In that sense they are the same, but they are still different because you can have light without hue and hue without light. At least as far as I can tell, but I'm perfectly happy to be proven completely wrong because I actually have no idea .

Hi, I know this is an old thread but I thought I'll just contribute in case any one else has this question. I do Studio Arts 3/4 and I'm mad about theory

Light is an element of tone. Tone is what gives an object (for example a sphere) a sense of dimension and form.

In order to create tone, you need light AND shadow. They're not separate things.

Hope that clarifies things.

(Hue and Chroma are not part of tone, they are part of colour theory.)
