Title: TSFX
Post by: Phoenix11 on November 13, 2018, 08:26:52 pm
Hello guys.
How are you all doing?
I was just wondering what people thought was better,  the tsfx summer school, permanent tuition of tsfx or the advanced program(tsfx)?
Any info will be appreciated.
 :) ;D

Warning - This is second hand information, I’ve only ever attended their lectures (not that great imo)
I did, however, buy someone’s masterclass notes for chemistry. I found these incredibly useful.

Anyway about the tuition, I’ve heard the lecturers really aren’t that great, it’s just the notes that are good.

I’d recommend simply buying the notes and avoiding having to pay exorbitant prices for a person to stand in front of a class room reading out the notes to you.

Personally I didn't find their lectures particularly useful. There's a huge amount of evidence now that lectures aren't particularly effective ways to learn, so I'd save your money and not go to them.

I think it's also worth challenging the implication in TSFX's advertising that their students' success are the result of their programmes. This might be the case, but it might also be the result of selection bias. Simply put, students who attend TSFX are probably more likely to succeed anyway; so the success of their students is not so much evidence of its usefulness as a programme as the inherent value of the students that attend their classes.

In your opinion, does this also extend to university lectures?

I attended their summer school for Chem this year, it's really sort of a heads up to the course, info crammed into 3 days, and I think I found one insightful point which my teacher covered later in the year anyway. It is quite expensive if I remember correctly, so if you are a capable self-learner I would recommend pre-reading the 3/4 course and generating some questions for teacher/tutor/helpful ATAR notes forum member. However, it is a good idea to go through some of the main concepts before you start year 12-e.g equilibrium and redox.
