WEEKEND Q+A #9: ORB
FRIDAY 10TH: 5PM-8PM

A LITTLE ABOUT ORB

Hey hey!
I'm Rob, currently a third year student studying the Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Finance and Management at the University of Melbourne!

I've been involved with a number of student societies during my time as a student, currently with BusinessOne, a pro-bono consulting club and many education related initiatives (ASHA, SWOT and VCESS!). Additionally, I've just come back from Seoul, Korea after taking part in the Global Management Consulting program.

I've had the fortune of representing the university internationally (all-expenses paid) for a case competition and will be going to Montreal, Canada for exchange soon!

When choosing my university degree, I found that I wanted the opportunity for a flexible, diverse degree and strong future career opportunities. After 2.5 years of Commerce at Melbourne, I've definitely experienced all of this, having had the fortune of working in a leading strategy consulting firm, impact investing and banking (Big 4), as well as receiving offers from a household name tech company.

Additionally, I was also tossing up between Medicine and Commerce throughout earlier parts of Year 12, so more than happy to offer my own perspective on choosing courses! :)

Outside of uni I love reading and watching NBA. If you have any questions related to the Commerce program at Uni, future job and extracurricular options, or just wanted to learn a bit more about the various opportunities that I've been a proud beneficiary of, please let me know!

Why did you choose commerce in the end?

I think that, towards the end of high school, I realised that medicine was more parental preference and prestige than actually wanting to study medicine. I also made the conscious choice to not sit the UMAT halfway through Year 12, so pretty much closed most of my options. In addition, I wanted a more flexible degree than medicine, which is usually quite restrictive because everyone you study with want to be doctors.

LeBron James or Michael Jordan? and why?

I'm quite a bit of a LeBron stan so i'll go with LeBron. He's an impeccable role model and is just as much of a competitor vs Jordan. I think Jordan still gets the edge in a 'best player' conversation at the moment, but there's still another 3-5 MVP-calibre years left in LeBron, so probably will save that conversation until LBJ is done with his career!

What are you looking forward to most about exchange? :)

The PEOPLE!!
I've been to Montreal for my case comp and they have some of the friendliest people i've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Bit cautious not to get my expectations too high because then i'll be in for a disappointment but i definitely had some of my best weeks at Montreal last year.

Also pretty keen for the snow, but people are warning me the snow doesn't get very exciting when you're knees deep in it....

What is your favourite NBA team?

Dallas Mavericks, but mostly because of Dirk Nowitzki (a legend and a class act)!! So keen to see how Luka performs in the league
