On the TI-89 Titanium, if you key in a long expression and you realised you've made an error in the middle, how do you not delete subsequent entries when deleting the middle bit and keying in the correct bit?

It's similar to the 'insert' effect on keyboards (so when you type in the middle fo the paragraph, all the text after your cursor thing gets deleted as you type.)

ummm, try 2nd, backspace. Thats the INS button. is that what you mean??

Well the answer to this lies in the analogy you used yourself. Just press INS (2nd then <--) and it'll be fixed.
