Collaborative music question bank!

This is a place where people can post their favourite song or a piece they think would be good to analyse, a link to a YouTube version & a question to answer. :)

It essentially becomes a huge thread of practice questions where you can find a new question to answer and (hopefully) post your own song & question for others to use. It should be a really quick way to be able to make questions to practise. They won’t be properly formatted questions like the HSC, however I will try to make some of those later on in the year. If you have any questions about how to analyse a piece or want feedback on an answer, feel free to post it here or on the question thread.

Hope to see heaps of people contributing to this thread!!  ;D

Love this idea!! I'll get the ball rolling.

Question: Discuss how aspects of tone colour are manipulated to create musical interest in the excerpt.

The excerpt in question is the first 2 minutes (2:00) of "City of Delusion," by Muse. I'd suggest giving yourself five playings, with breaks of 10secs, 30 secs, 1 min, 2 min and 2 min after each :)

Question: Describe the use of pitch in this excerpt.

Use the first 1:00 of the Wonder Woman theme! This would be the first question in an exam - Super quick, and should be fairly easy ;D

Music 1

There are two excerpts for this question. The first is from Come Along (2017) by Cosmo Sheldrake which will be played once (3:35- 4:15). The second is from a cover of Come Along (2019) by Pentatonix which will also be played once (2:25-3:04). Give yourself a pause of thirty seconds between each. Both excerpts will then be played once more without a pause.

Question: Compare the use of the concepts of music in these two excerpts.

Melodic Dictation

How to Approach Melodic Dictation

For the examples I will give for practice, I will indicate the time signature (and if there are any changes), the key, the starting note and if there is an anacrusis. I may also give hints as to where some of the rests are, as they might in the exam.

A typical approach to the exam is as follows:
First playing — 10 second pause
Second playing — 30 second pause
Third playing — 1 minute pause
Fourth playing — 1 minute pause
Fifth playing — 2 minute pause
Sixth playing — 2 minute pause

An excerpt from Ubi Caritas (2001) by Ola Gjeilo will be played six times for you to dictate the soprano melody. (0:11-0:34)

This excerpt is eight bars long in 3/4 time, has a key signature of three sharps and F# as a starting note. The time signature changes at Bar 4 to 4/4, Bar 5 to 3/4, Bar 7 to 2/4 and Bar 8 to 4/4. There is a minim rest on the first beat of Bar 1, a crotchet rest on the third beat of Bar 4 and a minim rest at the end of the excerpt in Bar 8.

The answer can be found here  ;D
