Question on ATAR Calculation- The Impact of Internal Ranks

Hi everyone!

I have a quick question regarding the calculation of the ATAR and was hoping someone could please address it, I hope this makes sense! I was wondering whether your cumulative internal rank in a subject, will match with whatever external mark another person got depending on your rank. This probably doesn't make sense, but here's an example:

There are two people in an Advanced Maths class:

Person 1 Gets a rank of 1st ;D
Person 2 Gets a rank of 11th

Person 1's cumulative rank in Maths is 1st, so will the external mark for Person 1 is equal to and will match whoever got the highest mark in the school's year group. ???

Whereas, Person 2's cumulative internal rank in Maths is 11th so this means that the student in the same year group who got 11th highest in external exams will match with Person 2 due to their internal ranks? ???

I hope this makes sense, thanks in advance! ;D

This is true, the person who is first will get the highest external mark obtained by the year group. However their external mark is just whatever they get. Your external mark is yours and yours only, no other factor can affect it. It will always be what you get in the final exam.

Whereas, Person 2's cumulative internal rank in Maths is 11th so this means that the student in the same year group who got 11th highest in external exams will match with Person 2 due to their internal ranks? ???
As for this, the person who is 11th won't always get the 11th highest external mark for their internal. However it will be very close. For example if the 11th highest external mark is 80%, the person ranked 11 might get 78/79 or even 82/83. It's going to be very close to 80 if not 80.

Thanks DrDusk for the quick reply! So the external mark is specific to you only, no one else's mark will be given to you depending on internal ranks? :)

Your external mark will only be influenced by the final hsc exam. It is based solely on your effort. Your INTERNAL mark on the other hard is influenced by internal ranks and the strength of your cohort and what external marks they get etc..
