Major difference between B.Sc at UoM and Monash?

I have no idea what’s the difference between their breadths and majors etc. I’ve been to open days read through posts from 2010 on AN which suggested downloaded the handbook which I have but still don’t understand what’s are majors minors and breadth! I guess I know majors sort of but breadth! Melbourne has and Monash doesn’t?

Also apparently (according to people on here) the breadths at Melbourne are annoying and they force you to take wine tasting and gender studies??? I’m not sure if that’s a joke but I probably need to know.

Because of the Melbourne Model only UniMelb has breadth subjects. They're not limited to wine tasting and gender studies though don't worry. You can learn languages, subjects from other degrees, and other fun stuff. You can find out what their breadth subjects are on their website. I personally think breadth subjects are quite cool because you are becoming a more all-rounded person (which is what the uni is trying to achieve). The melbourne model is only run in Melbourne Uni, so Monash doesn't have it :)
Edit: Also I don't think breadth subjects are part of your degree in the sense that it's not going to be on your resume that you did 'wine tasting' as a breadth subject right next your majors and minors.

Breadth subjects aren't necessarily exclusive to unimelb. Sure, maybe the term "breadth" is only used there but you are able to go to other universities and complete an undergraduate degree with all your electives outside your core discipline. E.g. doing a Bachelor of Science and then for your electives choosing all non-science subjects. It is just that elsewhere you are given the choice from everything (rather than getting you to choose from only outside your core area of study).  Same goes for the "Melbourne model" which is based on the idea that you begin with a generalist degree and then study a more specialised graduate degree after that - that is also possible elsewhere.

Just adding onto this - Monash would call them 'free electives' in the handbook and course breakdowns. It means any unit from any faculty that you meet prerequisites for can be taken in these slots.

The term 'Melb model' only ever really applies to courses that another uni might offer at undergraduate level. I think an example is law? Melbourne doesn't offer an undergraduate law course but Monash does.
