Title: Just a heads up
Post by: C123456789L on September 14, 2021, 08:58:07 pm
Heyo,

Just a heads up that one of the formula's on the 2019 ATAR Notes is wrong.

The equation says NCS instead of KNCS

Hope this is changed in the 2020 version

All the best, Casey

Hey Casey,

Thanks for raising this :)

Please note that the notes say ionic equation. The potassium and nitrate are spectator ions, which is why neither are shown in the ionic equation.

The full equation (which is what you were thinking of & is also correct) includes the nitrate and potassium ions.

By focusing on the ionic equation, it's more clear which ions are responsible for the colour change - which is what makes this reaction a great tool for demonstration of dynamic equilibrium principles.

Again, thanks for raising this as it's good to be double checked and hopefully this has helped you (and others reading this thread) with their understanding of chemistry in aqueous solutions
