Title: RMIT Extension Program
Post by: parchmentpaper on January 10, 2019, 10:42:23 pm
To anyone who has done a RMIT extension subject:
1. What subject did you do?
2. How many classes did you attend each week?
3. What was the workload like?
4. Were you in a mixed class with first year uni students? If so, was it easy to make friends/get along with everyone, and how many VCE students were in your class?
5. Would you recommend doing it?

I haven’t been able to find any information about RMIT’s extension program from people who have actually done it in the past and I’m debating whether or not I should do it not. Any insight at all would be appreciated!

Hi there! Not sure if this is still relevant to you, but if it might help anyone else, I completed the RMIT Extension Program this year along with Year 12, and it was by far the BEST decision I have ever made. It definitely has been one of the most enjoyable experiences, and you get to work with first year uni students on campus making new friends and experiencing uni life first hand!

1. I completed the Management and Marketing program which was super fun - You will complete Introduction to Management in Semester 1 (which has no exam!) and Marketing Principles in Semester 2, both equally rewarding and containing lots of group work. If you're lucky, you'll be put in a supportive group that will work with you in the group assignments, and this makes it really easy to do well (Distinction and High Distinctions are very much achievable!)

2.  In Semester 1, you will attend a one hour lecture and two hour tutorial, but this may differ between subjects. You can usually timetable these to be in the same day, or close together so it really doesn't impact your study time.

3. Either way, the course work is MUCH LESS than your standard VCE subject, and you will get plenty of extra spare time and free periods to study for what is really important.

4. You will be put in a regular first year class, and usually there won't be any other VCE students with you, as there are over 40 tutorials and 5 lectures to choose from when you timetable! However, the first year students are usually really nice, and I found it so easy to make friends and remain friends outside of class. If you're lucky, they will also help you outside of class with your VCE studies, which actually helped me so much.

5. YES, YES AND YES! Trust me, don't be hesitant in choosing to do the Extension Program - It was the best decision I have ever made. The commute to uni isn't very much if you're located in the metropolitan area, and the amount of extra time you get in comparison to your peers is INSANE, it helps so much and the workload is very little. You won't regret choosing it at all! RMIT is also quite 'laid back' in my opinion, and they don't take everything so seriously, so they will give you lots of help if you're struggling, and will definitely understand if you can't make it to any of the lectures and tutorials (no attendance is taken). Lectures are also recorded and available online, and all tutors are available to email outside of class time if you need.

Also, if you're debating whether to complete an online extension program (such as Deakin), I'd 100% recommend completing the face-to-face program, as the experience you gain completing the course with other students and physically attending lectures and tutorials is priceless during VCE. Your subjects will also contribute to your future degree if you choose to go to RMIT, and your scores can add up to 5 points to you ATAR!

Good luck in making your decision, hopefully I've been able to help!
