hello....
this is my research question:  is there any evidence to suggest that oil electric power stations are better than coal generated electricity in terms of atmospheric sulfur dioxide emissions?

the claim is: most sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere comes from burning coal or oil electric power stations.

any feedback on my research question will be much appreciated

thanks again :)

Hey consuelasaysno,

I have come to know that the development of the research question from the claim varies quite a lot depending on schools. In regards to our school, your research question would be inadequate in its specificity. Being more specific will allow you to narrow your research then evaluate your research and finally, extrapolate it to the claim to make your final statement.
Also, the beginning of the research question - "is there any evidence to suggest..." - would be considered a bit superfluous as you can reword it like this: "Are oil electric power stations better than coal-generated electricity in terms of atmospheric sulfur dioxide emissions?" This would open your research question up for you to answer and more importantly, it would be more chemistry-focused since answering "is there any evidence..." can be easily answer by a yes/no without chemistry (if you know what I'm saying. Sorry, this might be a bit confusing). However, even if you do that, your research question still is quite unspecific.

As an example, this was my claim and research question for my IA3:
Claim: “Sustainable polymers could solve the problem of plastics”
Research Question: "Do condensation polymers (e.g. polyethylene furanoate) satisfy the criteria of sustainability for future plastics rather than petrochemical plastics (e.g. high-density polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate)?"

Again, this all might be a bit confusing as the ISMG itself is a bit vague on the "specific and relevant research question" criterion so feel free to ask anymore questions. Also, something to note is that this is how our teachers at my school mark and draft so it could be different at yours. Anyways, hope this helps and good luck!
