Hello everyone,

This is my first post on here so be nice. I graduated from High School in 2015 and got a terrible ATAR score. It was 40.95.
My reasoning for wanting to repeat year 12: It still haunts me to this day. I feel like a failure from the moment I wake up to when I go to bed for the past 4 years. Everyone knows that everyone is judged by how much they earn and I don't want my career my entire life to be limited by my ATAR score. I am currently studying at RMIT and want to get into a better uni like Monash University or the University of Melbourne.

I want to get into the Bachelor of Computer Science at Monash University which requires an ATAR of 85.7+. When I finish my Bachelor of IT at the end of 2022 I'll be 24. Is it feasible to repeat year 12 at 24 years old and achieve an 85.7+ ATAR if I am very highly motivated? I plan to do it at RMIT as VCE Units 3&4. Alternatively, if it gives me a better chance I can not proceed with the degree and start VCE at 22 years old if it improves my chances. Even if I have to go to high school again I will do that.

Your ATAR does not limit your career choices - it just might take a different pathway to get to what you'd like to do. You're already studying a bachelors, so I would recommend (and most people would) the process of transferring to another uni/course by performing well in your current degree at RMIT instead of repeating VCE. Once you have received results at university (usually equivalent to one year of full-time study), your ATAR often isn't considered when transferring.

I'm unsure of the requirements for an external transfer into the BComSci at Monash, so I hope someone else can step in and answer that for you.

Re: the plan to finish the bachelors then do VCE again, I don't think there's a point to repeating VCE after receiving a bachelor level qualification.

Computer science requires 75 if you can apply for SEAS. I recommend you do information technology if you do not succeed in gaining entry to computer science, you can always transfer and it is way easier to get into information technology anyways. Repeating year 12 is a good idea assuming you can score higher the second time round (70's and 80's is doable with some effort), remember you must do methods because it is a prerequisite. Your atar does not determine your life and you can always change from here. Also what is wrong with RMIT? That uni is still pretty decent and not too bad.

What has been your GPA or WAM at RMIT if you don't mind sharing?

You should be able to directly transfer from RMIT to Monash/Melb with a solid WAM (e.g. 75/80+)

It unfortunately is the case that your university can prevent you from accessing some top-tier companies or make it really really difficult, in which case often a Masters from Melb would get you there.

Most of the time employers do not care that much about your ATAR but moreso about what grades you achieved at university.

Hope that helps! :)

For industries like law or commerce, yes the university can make a difference. If it is an industry in high demand like medicine it should not matter too much. Don't let my answer scare you, anyone can succeed regardless of the university they attended.

Medicine is only offered at a few selective universities and is incredibly competitive to get into in the first place.

Agreed on being able to succeed regardless of the university that you attend, although the unfortunate reality is that some firms only take you if you attended a specific university (sucks that the real world can be like Suits)

Already a lot of great advice but I thought it would be good to add that RMIT is not a bad university there are plenty of students who get degrees from them and go onto having a good career.

As others have said it probably isn't recommended to go back to get a highschool qualification once you have finished a bachelor's degree. If you do feel you need to go to another university you should try to either transfer to monash/melb or apply for the 2021 intake based on your undergraduate WAM/GPA.

At RMIT it seems like we don’t use GPA or WAM. On Canvas it doesn’t say anywhere what my GPA is it just lists my grades. I’m on a pathway right now where I do two years of an Associate Degree in IT containing Bachelor’s degree level subjects then I just do a final year of the Bachelor of IT and I get both degrees. I am on my second final year in the Associate Degree. My plan is to do the Bachelor of IT in 2021 and calculate my WAM myself and get a WAM that was suggested in this thread which is 80+. I didn’t do Maths Methods in Year 12 I did Further Maths. Because it’s a prerequisite for the BComSci at Monash I’m not sure how I can meet that requirement. There’s a unit in my degree called Discrete Mathematics maybe I can take that?

My guess is that you'll have to find an equivalent in the course you're taking or using one of your electives (where possible) to effectively cover the Methods prereq, if needed. Otherwise, you could look into bridging courses that would cover the prereq.

For now, I would probably contact Monash (usually by checking up Monash Connect) and asking them for advice. Usually they're able to deal with your personal circumstances and give a much more accurate answer, especially when talking about transfers between unis.
