alanihale's (very late) yr 12 vce journey journal :)

(I know term 1 is basically done already and I only just made this journal now, but I mean better late than never right!!)
Hi AN!!
So I've been meaning to make this journal since like last year but the good old friend called procrastination always got the better of me. However, I really do want to get the ball rolling so here I am!! I'm not super sure as of what to put here but I guess we'll give it a shot. This is mainly a motivational tool I guess? I can see my progress and remind myself that I'm not alone in the perilous journey called Year 12 VCE.  ;D
get to know me!!
A little intro into my life: I'm a yr 12 student from the class of 2019. I live in regional Victoria and I absolutely love it here!! I'm extremely passionate about human health and I love science (and dare I say math) so I'm thinking of a career in Medicine? maybe? hopefully?  :)
I don't anything with my life other than school which seriously sucks but I will spend precious time practising and progressing in my professional shower-singing career. I take uncomfortably long walks on the beach and I just love the outdoors! If I could do anything with my life, it would definitely be travelling to the world's unknown places!!
I'm currently studying spesh, methods, english, chem and bio and I did further last year.
Further was actually really enjoyable and I had a lot of fun learning the content which is something I hope carries through to my other subjects!!

Some goals I'm setting myself for this year:

ATAR: A beloved 99+ (only a few people in my school's past have actually gotten over a 99, most duxes are sitting around the mid 98's)

University offer: Medicine at Monash University (it's the goal, it's the dream. i've always had my eyes set on Monash for some reason and to get a place in my dream university in my dream course would be amazing!)

UCAT: I really want a score above 2900 which is relatively hard to achieve but I've had cousins in the UK get above 3000 :o I need UCAT to push my ATAR up because I probably won't get anywhere near a 99 :)

Subjects:

  • English: raw 43 - (this isn't my strong point but I'm very willing to work my ass off to reach my goal!)
  • Specialist: raw 40 - (I really enjoy the content so far and I'm doing fairly well as of right now)
  • Methods: raw 50 - (I find methods really easy and the content's not super hard or anything, however that being said I'm not putting in nearly enough effort to even sit above a 40. It's time I pull my sh*t (is swearing allowed?) together and start doing some work)
  • Chemistry: raw 40 - (My chem teacher is honestly amazing and he's got my super motivated to do well this year. My grade took a solid hit during term 1 on the galvanic cells test but I'm going to try and not let it phase me or ruin my motivation) {Note: I blame the fact that I had to run the 1500m during lunch  directly before the test and I had my Bio SAC on the same day  :( }
  • Biology: raw 47 - (I truly love biology and enjoy practically all of the content in the course!! I find it super interesting and honestly wouldn't mind surrounded future surrounded by biology related stuff)

This year is already partially over and I'm honestly pretty scared of what term 2 (the 8-week term) will entail. There's already like four SACs within the first 3 weeks so that's going to be fun!1!1!!!1!/11!

So this is my first entry of the (hopefully) many that will soon be coming throughout this year!!  I'll try and post often but I'm kinda bad with doing things that don't have dates whoops :(.
Thanks!!!!!

It's never too late to start a journal!
I'm keen to see your progress from now until the end of the VCE journey!!!

What makes you want to go for medicine? That's a pretty cool goal, and I'm sure your hard work and determination will get you through! <3

Also- favourite song to sing in the shower? You mentioned shower-singing in the spoiler! :D

Hey!
Never too late to start a journal :)

I take uncomfortably long walks on the beach and I just love the outdoors! If I could do anything with my life, it would definitely be travelling to the world's unknown places!!
What sorts of outdoorsy things do you like? Any particular places you want to visit or just everywhere?

This year is already partially over and I'm honestly pretty scared of what term 2 (the 8-week term) will entail. There's already like four SACs within the first 3 weeks so that's going to be fun!1!1!!!1!/11!
Yikes, that's nasty.

Swearing is fine btw - especially in your journal - so long as you're not swearing at anyone.

Hi Alanihale
Nice to see another med wannabe on the forums  :D
Bio was one of my favourite subjects (as you can see from my username) to study last year so I hope it is like that for you too.
What attracts you to medicine (if you don't mind me asking)?
Also, it's pretty cool that you have cousins in the UK! Get them to give you tips ahahah  ;)

Nice one! Pleased to see your journal pop up. :)

To pick up on your desire to travel and stuff (feels), what are your top three go-to travel destinations? ;D

I've always admired doctors and stuff from a young age (I spent a lot of time in and out of hospitals because I couldn't stop falling sick :) ) Since then I guess I've always dreamed of being able to physically help sick kids!! (it's super cliche but I guess it's still my reason lol) Thanks for your kind words!!

Also- favourite song to sing in the shower? You mentioned shower-singing in the spoiler!
Hozier's Take Me To Church definitely tops my list!! However, Bohemian Rhapsody comes in close second just for the fact that on more occasions than I would like to admit, it ended with an injury or two  :-X

My go-to travel destinations (more like my wish list) would probably be:
- iceland because it's just so stunning!!
- nepal (the base camp for the trekking)
- norway explicitly for kjerag (hiking once again)

Yesss

hiking, rock-climbing, science and wanting to help others - I like you already

Btw, you can reply to multiple people in the one post and we strongly encourage this to keep the forums neat :)
(we actually enforce not posting twice in a row outside of your journey journal)

Good luck with your journey - please don't stop doing outdoor activities just because it's year 12!

Hey our reasons are pretty similar lol I guess it doesn't matter whether your motivation for medicine is cliche or not as long as it motivates you 😊

YESSSS!!! Team Med represent!!!! I'm John, nice to virtually meet you!  ;D

Wow, I see quite a few similarities between us already. Aside from Monash med being a common goal, I do also love shower concerts, except what I sing is modern poppy trash. I'm also the kind of guy who gets a bit of an existential crisis when they do anything other than studying, so you're definitely not alone in the struggle to find something worthwhile to do other than hitting the books!

4 sacs in 3 weeks?!!?!?! Try 4 sacs in a single week, like I myself experienced during Term 1. I learnt a lot from that week's events. What I can tell you is that health & wellbeing is your absolute #1 priority! Seriously. Don't undervalue it, as prioritising health leads to being more productive and efficient, not the other way around*.

I don't think I've been so hyped to read a VCE journal! Can't wait for future updates, and truly enjoy your break, feel free to just let studying go, as I'm sure you've earnt it!  ;)

*my experience. I'm just another Year 12, after all.
Listens to K-Pop (Twice, Red Velvet, MAMAMOO) and Christmas music all year round.

Wow it's been a while since I've updated this!! Life's been pretty busy so far, with the never-ending supply of SACs and tests. I'm meant to be studying for the upcoming spec sac that starts tomorrow but I feel like I've done enough integration to set my mind on fire. I've been meaning to update this for a while now, it just took a lot of procrastination and other stuff to finally get around to this.
I had my predicted atar meeting last Thursday and let's just say the results were underwhelming. I'm currently predicted a 95.72 which isn't shabby but it's nowhere near enough to boot me into med.
I was predicted pretty generously for biology and chemistry and about average-ish for english but my goodness, my predicted for spec and methods were very, very, very low. I was pretty surprised with it considering I thought I was doing a-okay with my maths. (I got a solid roasting from my parents when I got home :( ). I did consult a couple of my friends and the guy who duxed methods last year (in yr 11) also thought his predicted was a lot lower than he anticipated. I guess I'll just have to put in a lot of extra effort and yknow, maybe do my homework .

Last week I completed the dreaded week long methods sac and the equilibrium chem sac. Methods was pretty alright, and dare i say fun?? however chem was a disaster. I semi-understood equilibrium and I did pretty well on the test so I don't know what happened to me during the sac. I'm disappointed with myself because I feel like I could be doing a lot better.

This months/weeks agenda: (depending on how I go with keeping up to date with this journal)
  • Update this journal
  • Hand in homework on time
  • Do way more UCAT prep (my test is 40 days away  :o)
  • Do well in my spec and bio sacs this week
  • Try to not hate the Lieutenant
I'm dreading the next few weeks because there's a sac every week from now on which is absolutely great! Oh well, I guess we just have to wait and see how they all turn out!

Some non-school related stuff
I've been pretty keen for the end of year 12 because I really want to travel to Europe with some friends or do a great ocean road roadtrip! I've been doing some planning and my parents weren't to enthused by the idea of me travelling abroad with a group of young people when I'm not even 18 so it seems like a bit of a no go but you never know which way the winds can blow!!
I had my formal equivalent last Saturday and 1. It was a let down because they can't even steam broccoli right (the rest of the food was pretty rubbish too) and 2. everyone looked super amazing in their dresses and suits!! Kinda happy I wouldn't have to do it again in (food wise) but I wouldn't mind another little formal dress up event hahaha!

Thanks for the read if you've made it this far ahaha! I'll try and update this more often!

Hey alanihale
Don't worry about predictions yet, we are only halfway through the year and plus they are just predictions. You never know what can happen later on! Btw I mean this both ways, whether you got high or low predictions.
To give some context, last year I was predicted a 45 in bio and fm. Turns out my teacher wasn't that accurate plus having panic attacks during fm exam 2 doesn't exactly help  :-[ oh well

Just keep trying, I am sure you will exceed your predicted scores!

It's been over two months since I last updated this and honestly, I'm pretty disappointed with myself. This basically means I haven't gotten my act together and we're already 2 weeks into term 3, with 8 more to go.
Some life updates
- I took the UCAT and did really bad. I got a 2520, which I'm super disappointed in because I was doing really well on the Medify practise (I averaged out my mocks and I predicted a 2890 :( )
- I've been looking at a lot of non-UCAT entry pathways and the atars for those bad buys are way out of my league
- I'm doing well on my SACs so that's pretty great but I'm about to do shit all for the oral speech that's on Wednesday. I haven't actually written it yet so it's just a bunch of points here and there and I'm going to cry
Side note: does anyone know how to combat anxiety when it comes to speeches. Last time I did a speech in front of my class I ended up walking out in tears so I'd really like for this not to happen again.
- I had to miss my old school's formal because it was the day of my UCAT and it was in Adelaide which if felt pretty bumbed about but everyone looked so fricking pretty!!!! ohmygod!!!
- I'm also addicted to dance moms

Next week is looking pretty chockablock with four SACs: English, Methods, Biology and Chem. But I have a friend's 20th to look forward too next Saturday if I make it out alive!! Let's do this!!
