So a chiral centre is "a carbon that is attached to four different groups". But does this group include the whole chain, or just the adjacent carbon(s)?

For instance, for glucose, shown attached, would carbon 3 not be considered a chiral centre because it is bonded to two CHOH groups, or a chiral centre because the rest of the whole compound is different, C4-C6 as one group and C1-C2 as another?

You have to look at the whole chain. C3 as you have indicated is indeed a stereogenic centre

Hello everyone, I am making this journal to create a place for me to express my academic journey and have the ability to provide advice and solutions with people wishing to do the atar pathway. For people who don’t know the “suicide 6” I have chosen methods, specialist, chemistry, biology, physics and English. With all these subjects chosen I have been most scared for English, I HATE English and I feel like that is something that’s going to make me procrastinate.

You may be wondering why I am starting this journey now, in the middle of the year. Well my school lets us have a ‘trial’ of all the subjects we wish to choose and basically is a head start on unit one, this is done over terms 3 and 4 of year 10, which is what I am doing right now and has led me to start this journal.
I hope that I use this journey as a form of motivation and justification of the amount of ridiculous hours I imagine I am going to have to spend in studying. But, this isn’t just about me and I hope I am able to help many of people with subject selections, atar etc.
p.s. I probably won’t be posting much until school starts again as there won’t be anything to update so expect a post in week one of term 3.

Hey everyone I'm currently a year 10 student at Rossmoyne Senior High School. I want to go into law at UWA, specifically study Juris Doctor via Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice.

My plan, subject wise, is to study English Lit, Math Apps, Psych, Politics and Law, Economics and human biology (general). I was wondering how difficult it would be to get a 98 atar, and if any of you had any advice on how to get it

Hi, this is actually a very good question which many students fail to get right.

\(x^2=16\) has two solutions, \(x=4\) and \(x=-4\)

But \(x=\sqrt{16}\) has only one solution, \(x=4\)

To help understand why this is the case, try and consider it visually... the graph of \(y=\sqrt{x}\) is strictly positive (or 0)

Pretty much the square root of a number by itself is always positive. Also, \(x^{\frac{1}{2}}=\sqrt{x}\).

i did so fkn bad, literally had mental breakdown the whole week after the results came and still having them now

RC - above average (it was alright)
VR - average
NR - average
maths - BELOW AVERAGE
writing - low average (22/30)

tbh lost hope of getting in at this point, i did a re-test of all the test and got 70's but ya no.. send help. congrats to those who did well 🥳

also the person marking the writing at JAC is too nice. the lowest i got is 80 like wtf you ain't doing me no favours by being nice. anyways ya sorry abt the kinda aggressive language
