Simple question...
Which is better, Soccer or AFL?  :-\

You can argue on the all-round skillset, the fanbase, anything...
Mainly, which one is better to play/watch for you and why?

Surely no objective person can say this. AFL requires more all round skill, more all round physical prowess, and is a better spectator sport for someone with no knowledge of either sport - just inherently more going on for a new person to watch

Soccer has heaps happening all the time...
It comes right down to the millimetres difference in the kick... You might need to know something of the game, but it's awesome when you do. :D

I mean, both are different enough that it's kinda hard to name a superior without some sort of category to tie it to.

I like how NRL isn't listed. That's gold. awaiting NSW responses

P.S - I changed the Soccer option on the poll from it's original value... for obvious reasons. OP knows why :)

My preference: AFL

Anyone in AUS surely cannot choose Soccer over AFL. What planet are you on?!?!

The beautiful game is more technical and strategic (with many variations in playing styles). I also love the passion of fans in European football and how congregate and form their own communities (and characterises the cities that they are based in eg. Merseyside is strongly influenced by the Liverpool/Everton club culture). And the cult personalities- Ibrahimovic, Messi, Gerrard, Alonso (not really, but he's a class act), Henry. There is a conveyor belt of exciting new talents.

If you had to pick between footy and soccer, which AFL team would you barrack for?

Hahaha debates about the two sports never end nicely :P
I would also like to chime in that it's not soccer, it's football ;) But, for the purpose of this post, I shall call it soccer.

Personally, I would pick soccer over AFL any day. This is because I grew up playing it - I have basically lived and breathed it for ~14 years. I have so many amazing memories from playing this sport (along with some not too good ones), and have made some awesome friendships from playing. I think it's a sport where you don't necessarily appreciate the skill and work it takes in order to become a high level/pro player (or even a semi-good player), until you play the sport yourself.
I think the problem is, the sport is demonised a bit, and has been demonised in the past (potentially due to its history as an immigrant sport? I'm not sure, so don't quote me :P), plus, in Australia, the sport's own governing body isn't a great help. The same can definitely be said though, about soccer fans demonising AFL - it's a two way street.

I can certainly though, see why people love AFL. I personally don't understand the sport (despite my best attempts!), and it's just something I've never been able to engage with particularly well. However, I appreciate that it's a very technical sport in its own right.
I'd say I also struggle to watch AFL more now too because I can recognise injuries and I pay more attention to them, then I start thinking about consequences later on in players' lives (particularly for repeated concussions, etc.), and it just makes me cringe. This does happen when I'm watching soccer, too, but I think the fact that I have that deep underlying love for the sport is a big help in making me continue to watch (plus, there are less head injuries in soccer).

I feel like we should be able to respect both games without needing to declare allegiance to one and denounce the other :)

umm football (soccer)

do people still follow AFL?

"soccer" is much more strategic game and players can't drop concentration for the duration of the game.
 AFL players need interchanges.

Fanbase wise "soccer" clubs have religious worldwide followings and I can't really comment on AFL because I only know that it isn't international - not sure how closely people follow in aus :-\
