I thought today would be a good time to update since there are some things on my mind. These past couple of weeks have been smooth sailing. We've been having these preparation assemblies/seminars, about VCE and VCAL and all that, and soon we've got course counselling meetings. I don't have any SACs yet - thank god - just some homework and class work. As for *important* subjects...

ENGLISH
All the advanced classes had a theatre presentation on Black Diggers- two actors came in and acted out select scenes, did some readings from The Longest Memory, and we had a group discussion. My homework was to write three paragraphs answering "How is inequality presented in both the texts?"

MATHS
We've started factorising, and factorising quadratic trinomials has been pretty simple. I'm still not sure whether to seek tutoring or not. I think that if I pull a few strings, I'll be able to get into the Methods after school help-club-thingy to get some extra help.

HHD
Our class has finished doing Medicare, Private health insurance, Community services etc, and now we're ahead of the other classes, so we had a mini subtopic about organ donation. I'm feeling really confident in Health, and I think theres nowhere to go but up! My next SAC is in WK5, which I'm not too worried about. Also helps that my teacher is amazing. Love you Miss!!!!!!11!!

pErSonaL tHingS

This week is pretty busy in terms of SRC. We're doing R U OK preparations, I'm sitting in on a Safe Schools Professional Development meeting, and I've got a meeting set up with my teacher about my role in Social Media prep and the SRC website. I've got to present my plans at the School Council meeting in Week 7 to the leadership team and parents,,,,, rip me lololololll

Also, my 16th is coming up pretty soon. I've already bought a dress, but it's going to be covered with a bib since we're going to a restaurant where they grill things and throw it at you. Fun times !!!!!!!!

In sociology, we watched an episode of the show Redfern Now, where Joel, an Indigenous character, refuses to stand up for the national anthem at the new, prestigious school he goes to.
My teacher (no shade to her, she's great) started talking about this upper class school, and how students who graduate from them go on to become politicians, top barristers, surgeons, etc etc. She kind of gave me the impression she was telling us that being successful depended on going to a 'successful' school.

(I seriously mean no disrespect to anyone reading this that goes to a select entry/higher ranked school. You're amazing ILY. Just sharing a perspective from someone that goes to a lower ranked school.)

My school is a good school, in my eyes. But others may think differently, because of some problems with student behaviour. We're ranked, what, something in the 300/400's? Some don't go into VCE, and those who do may not get higher scores or do as well as those from private schools.

But, that doesn't mean that our kids should be compared to others. Sometimes it kind of feels like underrepresented schools are generalised into being 'worse' and all that, when, we just have different students who have different goals. I had these thoughts today and wanted to share them somewhere. (edit; i cut out some unnecessary rant parts for clarity)

The rest of this week should be pretty breezy! I need to finish some maths questions, answer some soce questions, and type up my notes for HHD.

A quick question to all the Year 11's, 12's and up - how did you pick your subjects?

See you soon, AN!

Hmm in year 11 I did 3/4 Biology - can't really pinpoint an exact reason I chose the subject but out of the ones available to do in year 11 it was the best for me -  another subject I considered was Accounting.

For year 12, the choice of English was pretty straightforward, my school didn't offer English Language (I think if it was an option I may have done this alongside the standard English). I also did Methods and Specialist. Methods was an easy choice given it was a prerequisite for many courses I was interested in at the time. I enjoyed/felt was strong at maths so did Specialist as well.

I also did Chemistry, which again was quite an easy choice given it opened up heaps of university options and on top of that, I did MUEP Chemistry (uni extension). I liked chemistry and wasn't too sure of another VCE subject to do in year 12 so decided to do this after speaking to a few past MUEP students.

Would you say your uni extension was worth it? I've got UMEP in the back of mind for yr12.

Personally, for me, it was a very good decision to do MUEP and definitely worth it.

I can't really recommend it to someone else without knowing them too well - but if you feel like you are a good student and also able to score very well in year vce subjects I would say it is a great option. Having a good vce score from your year 11 is always a bonus but something I felt was a good indicator on whether someone should do a uni extension (although doesn't necessarily have to be in that subject).

It's been a while, hasn't it? I've got the spunky red box letting me know how much dust has collected on this journal. I didn't really feel the need to update much, as it's been a slow month.

Most importantly, I'm one year older now! My birthday was last week, and to be honest, I thought I'd have this, you know, ~feeling~ about my birthday but it's been chill. I don't really feel any type of way about it, except grateful that I get to see another year. We celebrated at a Japanese restaurant, the one where they throw food at you. Lets just say I cleaned a lot of food out of my hair that night.  ;D It was super fun, and I'm really thankful to my friends and fam.

I'm sick at the moment. I took yesterday (Friday) off school to recover at home. I came down with a horrible sore throat a couple of days ago and, oh my god, my voice completely took a hit. I sound like I've smoked a pack a day for the last 50 years.

I originally thought my lost voice was because I stupidly inhaled some helium out of a big balloon, but then came the pain, and the headache, and I knew I was done for.

Recently I've enjoyed watching Glow on Netflix - after much hesitation and delay, I finally caved and watched it. It's amazing. "Where have you been all my gotdamn life" amazing. I have created an 80's playlist and my Mum, who was a teenager in the 80's, is very delighted to see me listening to "her music." I think we can also all agree how much we love Alison Brie

Also, KLD applications open on Monday. That's a thing! That's happening!
I've lowkey been counting down until September 2nd and here it is! In the flesh!
I might talk more about it in an upcoming entry, after applications.

As for an update on school, I've picked my VCE subjects:

  • English
  • Maths Methods
  • Psychology
  • Biology
  • HHD 3/4
  • Literature

I'm not too sure if a Lit class will run next year, as I don't think many people have chosen it. If that happens, I've chosen Legal Studies as my backup. If you've seen my subject selection post, I had a hard time trying to decide between Literature and Legal Studies, and after chasing up almost all of my teachers for advice, I stuck with Lit.

My subjects have been alright these past weeks, nothing too exciting.
Look at me, being all fancy and savvy with a spoiler. Who does she think she is?

Spoiler
HHD
I got 100% on my SAC on Australian Healthcare !! Woo!!
I don't know how I keep doing this lmao.
We've moved onto our global health topic. We also have a student-teacher in the class, so that's been new and exciting.

MATHS
We've done quadratic formula stuffs and now we're doing parabolas.
I actually like Maths, so I'm trying really hard to understand and be able to apply everything.
I got a C on my last test. It's not that bad but it's not that great either.  :o

HISTORY
So, yes, I've moved out of Physics. It wasn't for me, and I needed to change it. So History it was!
I'm actually really enjoying it! This class is about the Cold War and the relationship between the United States and the USSR.
We watched 'Red Dawn' and had to write an essay discussing either the purpose of the film, or how the film villainises Russian characters.
I normally don't enjoy 80's propaganda disaster films, but I mean, it was great. Very Patrick Swayze-ey.

I think we're all in that Term 3 state of mind at the moment. Only three weeks to go until a well needed break.
I might experiment with this one-month/30 day update scheme, as I don't have much going on at the moment. All the fun stuff is later in the year! Like exams! And VCE! Yay!

Alright. Enough.

See you soon, AN.

Aww, that sounds like a lot of fun for a birthday! It's also great to see you're enjoying history (I wish I could too). It's also nice to know that even if you don't get Lit, you're still happy with Legal Studies
I still hope you get your first preference though

term 3 is OVER!!

This past week has been the slowest week ever, and even though we had a short day today, every minute felt like 5 minutes. It was agonising, but it's over. It's been so nice to end the term with some gorgeous weather here in Melbourne. I've honestly been so over school these passing weeks it's a joke. I haven't been motivated lately and that's definitely reflected in my reports and stuff. I'm super keen to just not do anything for the next two weeks.

I submitted my application for KLD and that is now ticked off the list for the year! Students get notified of the outcome on November 22nd. Fingers crossed for all the yr10's applying!

This year has gone by so quickly, and it made me think of how next year and the year after will go even quicker. I remember in yr7 we would always talk about VCE and now it's practically here on my doorstep. It's wild. Next term (Term 4) is basically only 5 or so weeks and then we have our exams. I think my last day is around Dec 13th or so and omggggggg I just want summer back already  :'(

Here's my subject updates and holiday homework:

ENGLISH
We successfully finished our The Longest Memory and Black Diggers work  ;D I received good feedback on my practice sac, but I haven't got my marks back for the comparative. I'll most likely get it back after the holidays.
Our holiday homework is to draft our oral presentations and statement of intentions, and annotate three pieces of evidence relating to our topic. Orals are so kickback I love them so much ahrghssjdjks
Our next SAC is our orals in Week 2 !

MATHS
guys i goT A 90% ON MY TEST
Maths has been kicking my ass lately but I've managed to fight back!!! We had this STUPID GOOSE PROBLEM (ノಥ益ಥ)ノ that the whole class could barely solve. (whoever else is using the Oxford MyMaths 10/10A Victorian Curriculum textbook might know what I'm on about) and basically it's a quadratic application, where you have to figure out the intercepts and turning point to answer the worded problem about this goose pen. It's easy when you think about it but when I was in there, jesus I was SHIT. I managed to scrape through though!
My holiday homework is some questions on drawing circle graphs I didn't complete in class.

HEALTH
HHD's been chill, we've polished up the economic classification of countries and are moving onto SDG's. My next sac is Week 4 of next term (:
I've set myself holiday homework to finish my flashcards about SDG and type up my notes. My books are running out (I have one for notes and another for practice question) and I hope I can hang on until the end of the term

HISTORY
We've moved onto Civil Rights, mainly focusing on human rights and First Nations people. History's gone by pretty slow but I'm enjoying the content. My holiday homework is my sac, which is to write a historical inquiry about a particular event impacting First Nations civil rights. I've chosen the 1965 Freedom Rides as my topic, and I've received some great feedback on my draft (o˘◡˘o)

SOCIOLOGY
We've finished our topic of Forced Marriage, and completed our two-part sac (A brochure and a test). In soc we've mostly watched documentaries and movies and I'm lowkey over it but it's whatever. I don't have any hw for this subject

HUMAN BIO
We've been looking at cell diffusion and osmosis and we recently completed a prac. We had to test how the mass of potato slices change in differing solutions, each with changing concentrations of sucrose and distilled water. Bio is one of my favourite subjects at the moment, and I'm 100% looking forward to it next year!
My holiday homework was to work on my research poster, which I've conveniently finished, so I'll send that in for some feedback and see how I've gone.

I'm sooooooooooooo keen for holidays
My break will consist of going to the gym, getting my second lobe piercing (!!!), playing BTS world, doing hw, and maybe going out for some boba and kbbq. What are you guys up to for your holidays?

I think that's all for today!

See you soon, AN.

Hi! I know that SAC is usually used for VCE but at my school we use the term for assessments at Year 10 and up. From Year 7-9 we'd call them 'portfolio tasks'.
