Which one should I choose?

I've heard it's usual to do about 6 VCE subjects, so that means 5 in year 12 (I don't want too much stress), so I've got a choice between Chemistry, Biology, and Chinese (SL) for next year. Chemistry's been pretty interesting thus far, but I've had a super teacher... it ties in with physics which is awwwright. Biology is OK at the moment, the material seems pretty noobish so far, it's easy but I get bored - I've heard people say Bio 3/4 is pretty interesting though. As for Chinese (SL), I guess I 'could' bear it, but I don't enjoy it that much... I've gotten some pretty awesome results, including dux of SL last year, but I feel depressed that all the advanced SL guys are gonna stomp on me next year. I guess an advantage to Chinese is the scaling.
Any suggestions?

well it seems you like them all / are good at them all in some way

so lets think about what you want to do in university, cause that would help my advice... what do you want to do in uni??

Well, I want to do science in uni, but then... chinese would be good for scaling too

i'd say do chinese, because from what you've told us, you're good at it, and it looks great on your resume or uni application that you've completed a lote. chem's good as a prerequisite, and out of bio and physics i'd probably choose bio, but that's only because i find bio more interesting

I agree with moshi. Physics is so hard. bio>phy

Ask yourself whether you'd rather do Chinese and get a slightly higher score or chem/bio and end up with a slightly lower ENTER

DivideBy0 will find physics extremely simple, especially with next year's new study design (though it means more "experimental" and more uncertainties about what you are getting assessed on). but knowing your current knowledge, i'll be surprised if you dont gun it.

juggling between the three choices, you got to keep in mind what role these will play in your final score, that is:

EngLang will defintiely be counted, your uni subject will count as your 6th, that means, one of the remaining four will be only worth 10%
knowing you will rape both maths and physics, the impact of the next subject won't matter THAT much.

the highlight of having a LOTE will be easily overshadowed by UMEP/MUEP, at the end of the day, it just comes down to what will allow you to have the most fruitful and happy year.

my personal opinion: dont do language if you dont like it. one language is hard enough.

If you want to do science, then do physics since it is a prerequisite for many university physics courses. Biology on the other hand is pointless unless you really enjoy it.

For you, either chemistry or Chinese. If you want to maximise your ENTER and are confident you can get above 50 scaled for Chinese, do that, otherwise do chemistry - where I'm sure you'd get close (if not) 50 scaled.

Although you do sound like you hate Chinese, so if you don't think it's worth the trouble, do chemistry. Chemistry scales pretty well too, unlike biology, but since I never did biology I can't really speak on its behalf =P

Go do Chinese. It's so worth it. Well, I had to do it for 12 years, and came through unscathed.

Just a short noted, around ~350 people do Chinese SL each year, so you'll have to be in the Top 30 to receive a raw score of 40 which gets scaled to 50.
That was what it was last year. :)
2008 ENTER = 97.90

Hey thanks for all the advice, but I'm still having trouble making up my mind. Top 30 sounds pretty hard to do for Chinese, I know about 10 people from my school alone who are doing SL despite having done the SLA course last year and they will probably beat me, and don't get me started on Melbourne High School... but I guess if I try hard enough I'd have a chance... sorry I think I'll need some more time to decide.

My advice: You can't do well in chinese no matter how hard you try unless you have some form of background. Scaling just negates the amount of 'non background' people in it.

Eg, after 6 years of trying really hard chinese got the grand place of 7th subject not counted. Only 1 non asian surnamed person last year got 40+ (that chose to release their results of course)

If you've got a good memory I'd go bio
2008 ENTER: 98.10
Biology 50, Chemistry 45, Mathematical Methods *, Specialist Mathematics *, Further Mathematics(2007) 46

if you like theoretical and analytical stuff, (and I think you do), definitely take chemistry. The new study design aims more at problem solving these days, which I think you will really enjoy.

if you like memorising (or if you have a graphic memory), biology isnt bad.
just that you have to *write* for a lot of the answers on the exam.... :P
