Specialist Math

Hey guys,

I’m currently in year 10 and i was wondering about how you guys like specialist and if it’s worth doing.
Do you regret it?
Will it help with medicine?
Also, is there any overlap between spec and physics?

Thanks in advance :)

Hey Mia!

I'm a QCE student as well but unfortunately, I don't do Specialist Maths - I do General Mathematics as I probably won't have to teach five-year-olds about vectors any time soon :D. But I have asked a good friend of mine who does do Specialist Maths if she could answer your questions as she's interested in medicine as well. I'll let you know as soon as possible when she replies to my text message as I'm sure it would really help you choose your subjects for Year 11.

Hopefully, that helps :)

Have a great week and kind regards,

Darcy Dillon.

hi!

i do speciliast maths and personally, it's definitely not my favourite subject; however, to answer your question, yes, there is a small overlap between specialist and physics, as well as specialist and methods. i don't really think it would help with medicine, as if you look at the prerequisites, they generally only require either chemistry or maths methods (or equivalent).

hope this helps :)

Hey!

As nc has said there is some overlap with physics (e.g. in motion) but physics is designed so that even someone not doing spec or methods can do it. Physics at a uni level is very maths heavy but basically as long as you can rearrange equations and plug numbers in you've got the maths you need for QCE physics. There's some advantage to doing QCE level maths with physics but not enough to impact deciding whether to do spec or not imo.

I'm not a medicine student but from what I've heard there's not much benefit to doing spec for med.

I generally encourage people to take at least one maths subject and preferably either methods or spec to help them keep their options open after high school. The decision about what maths to take should be based on the type of maths you find more interesting - would you rather work with more complex and abstract maths that's more useful for uni maths (spec), more relatable and day-to-day maths (further) or a maths  between those two (methods)?

Taking a look at the syllabuses will also help you figure out what's most suited to you :)

I did specialist maths in VCE and I found it to be worthwhile doing but it definitely isn't for everyone.

As Bri MT has said it won't help too much with a medical course although the statistics component of the course can be quite useful. Having said that I don't think someone should pick specialist maths just to learn that statistics part since you could just do that outside of school if you wanted to.
