What does VCAA want us to know about the link reaction in respiration?

Do we include it as part of krebs, or separate from it, since the pyruvate is converted to acetyl coA so acetyl coA can be used as an input to krebs?(is this right)?

Thanks.
VCAA wants you to pretend like the link reaction doesn't exist.

I've had a look through the past exams - there's only one question that acknowledges the existence of acetyl coA and all you need to know is that there's one acetyl coA for each pyruvate molecule. Pretty sure that question isn't in the study design anymore anyway.

I would definitely just say that pyruvate is the input for Krebs given that's what the correct answer is on the past exams :)

Which are the best resources in terms of practice questions?

I didn't do VCE biology, but for practice EXAM questions (at least for the other sciences I did do, and assuming you wanted to practice exam-style questions), the best resource out there is past VCAA exams! Otherwise I believe that practice exams (obtained legally, typically via a teacher), topic tests (such as these ones here) and checkpoints are your next best options ^-^

Hope this helps a little! :)

Hi.
Do coenzymes speed up the rate of reactions, in terms of enzymes?

No. They just help enzymes do their thing, but by themselves they do not speed up the rate of reaction.

Okay.
Can enzymes catalyse reactions without them?

Okay.

Many reactions don't need a co-enzyme, but those reactions that do need them always need them

For the Krebs cycle, do we only need to know the inputs and outputs (and their numbers) or do we also need to know the basic outline of the process e.g acetyl coenzyme A being formed into citrate etc.

Hi!

Can anyone help me, I confused as to whether enzymes need energy for their metabolic properties, like breaking down or building up substances? Thank you!

You just need to know inputs, outputs, and location :)

Hello everyone im a current year 11 student
I am currently studying specialist maths and strongly dislike it...hence why I wanna switch to biology at the end of semester 1.
Also biology is an advantage if you wanna go into careers such as biomedicine, biomedical sciences, etch ...which is where I wanna go.
Is unit 1 of biology important in unit 3/4 ....??? should I study bio at home while I can? or should I just chill and focus on my other subjects  8)
thnx ;D

Unit 1 knowledge will certainly come in handy in Unit 3 biology, but you probably don't need to stress over it too much right now. I would recommend just going through the textbook (reading it and answering some questions) to get yourself acquainted with the content.

Enzymes generally need energy (usually given in the form of ATP) to perform “build up” reactions or endergonic/anabolic reactions. As far as I know in VCE biology, enzymes release energy when breaking down molecules, and don’t need energy to do so.

The full equation of photosynthesis (without simplification) is
6CO2+ 12H2O———C6H12O6+6H2O+6O2
I was told that the Water on the right side is cancelled out. I’ve also noticed you don’t include it as an output of photosynthesis, only as an input. Why? Even if the equation is simplified, doesn’t it mean that water has still been outputted?

Water IS still outputted by photosynthesis, its just that when you are writing the net equation, you cancel out the water to show that there is a net loss/consumption of water in the process.
You can write the equation in both forms and get full marks.
