Title: Get to know you series :) [CURRENTLY: Favourite Kitchen Appliance]
Post by: Joseph41 on March 07, 2019, 02:22:42 pm
Hi everybody!

This is such an awesome community. Awesome communities are made up of awesome people. And I though it'd be nice to get to know each other a bit more!

So in this thread, I'm just going to periodically change the prompt in the title of the thread. The first one is extracurricular activities - so just list or talk about what you do outside of school/uni/whatever. :)

PROMPT: What extracurricular activities do you do? Why?

I'll start us off!

I'm honestly not as involved in as much stuff as I should be, but here goes.

I enjoy drawing, running and walking my dog Neville. I don't draw or run as much as I would like to. Spending time with my girlfriend is my favourite thing, no matter what that really involves. I have absolutely no idea how this is the case, but I've been sucked in to watching old episodes of Big Brother, which makes no sense because it was awful at the time and remains that way now. But I like it.

I used to play a lot of sport, namely cricket. I don't do that any longer, but I definitely still enjoy watching cricket, footy, whatever's on at the time. :)

I get bummed when I get asked this because I usually work too much to have time for extracurriculars! ;)

- Hanging out with my fiancé is also my fave pasttime. Lately that's involved wedding planning and budget spreadsheets - Ooft, what a great time! ;D
- I try to find time to watch TV with my family every evening, even if I'm doing some light work at the same time. We usually shit talk the people on whatever reality TV show is hot at the time, or binge watch old episodes of Judge Judy.
- When I manage it, I love taking my dog Bella for a walk and listening to music. One of the very few times I'm not "working" :)

Knitting, watching Netflix and hanging out with my boyfriend are probably the 3 things I do the most :) Currently knitting a baby blanket for a family friend who is expecting and I'm enjoying it so much that I've started bringing my knitting to uni to do in the breaks lol

- I help lead the years 2-4 Group at Girls Brigade and we do stuff like craft, games, cooking, devotions, etc. Kinda started off in Girls Brigade in year 7 and then went on with three of my friends to become leaders last year.

- I'm involved in my local band (both the youth ensemble & main wind band), uni's wind symphony and clarinet lessons, so I practise and do concerts/marches and events with them. Been a part of my local one since year 6, and uni's a course requirement (but it's really good). I've also been involved in school musicals a few times and I think I'm going to do the orchestra for my schools musical this year.  :D

Outside of work, hanging out with my baby nephew occupies the bulk of my time. I like teaching him things. We're currently stuck on a game where I kick a ball away from him, and he carries a donut (the inflatable ones for pools), and he has to slam the donut onto the ball so the ball gets stuck on it

Other than that, I like wood-burning (still learning the movements), martial arts (altho I only do it once in a blue moon nowadays -- not lessons, but I spar with my brother at the gym), gardening (I grow a bunch of herbs, some veggies, and flowers), and cooking (I enjoy learning new cuisines). I've also been fixing an old dirtbike for the past 16 months. It's not a hobby and I'm only like 30% done haha, but it makes me sound interesting if I pretend I'm still actively doing it

Outside of work and school, my free time is divided between a fair bit of running, poor attempts at Reading, and lurking about these forums. I would like to do more reading though.

I really enjoy photography - even if the photos don't turn out great, I enjoy having a purpose for walking somewhere - also enjoy walking places just for the sake of it though (I should probably post some of the photos I took last night haha).
Love listening to music, but I'm rather bad at finding new songs to listen to.
I enjoy pretty much any water-based activity, although it's not something I do a lot due to a lot of those sorts of things being expensive/needing equipment I don't have.
Also really enjoy reading, although I haven't been doing much of it lately.

Aso, netflix. Just finished watching The Umbrella Academy

What is wood-burning, exactly? I know nothing about it, but it sounds interesting.

Wood-burning (or pyrography if you're fancy) is using a heated point to, you guessed it, burn markings onto wood haha. Right now I use a solid-point burner, which looks like a thick pen with a brass tip, which is then heated to a set temp by some fancy electrical thingo. As I get more experienced I'll switch to one with variable heat, as the heat of the metal determines the width and colour of the burn

Right now I'm just getting the movements down, so what I do is cut off a piece of soft wood, and use pencil to draw a bunch of straight lines and curved lines, then I try to follow it. Once I get the movements down a bit more I'll try with simpler art pieces haha. I want to eventually make stylized boards for board games -- like chess and hnefatafl (cool game, would recommend, thx Melb Museum). I'll have to post some of my first pieces on AN ;)

Pyrography pen

This is an example of a tool used. The dial controls the heat, which determines colour. Below it are nibs, which are writing points of different cuts and shapes, which allow for different things -- like sharper lines, adding fades, shading, blahblah).

So - apologies for the crass comparison - is it kinda like wood tattooing?

I try to practise around 45min-1hr most days, mainly for scales and pieces for my exams. We get assessed on the wind symphony music so I practise through some of the harder parts (the runs and faster bits), but I don't practise too much for the other band (unless it's for a concert or the musics a bit hard). I have wind symphony on Tuesdays (4-6:15) and my other band on Fridays (6:30-10) so I don't really practise at home too much on those days. :)

It's a recent and somewhat infrequent thing haha. It takes a while for the pen to heat up, so I usually need a lot of spare time to do it or I only get 5 minutes of actual work, so for now it's not super frequent (YET)

Not crass because I fucking love master tattooists haha. And yes, it's actually a perfect comparison! And just like tattooing, it's really difficult to keep the same direction/depth on the material you're using. I'm currently using poplar to burn, as it's pretty soft and the grain isn't funky so it produces no weird sap bubbles (like you'd get with really sturdier woods like oak)

Outside of actually studying/crying at the amount of teamwork I have to do at uni (and sleeping. Let's also include reading here haha):
- Going on coffee/lunch dates with mum (last time, it was an AquaS icecream one. 100% recommend.)
- Waiting in (horrendous) lines for free food whilst at uni (I waited 37 minutes for a sub-par taco yesterday...)
- Helping out at a Red Cross shop
- Helping out on two uni clubs I'm on the committee for. (Which includes freaking out that the event I'm responsible for rn lol)
- Occasionally playing my bass
- Also always planning my next flight(s) to/from Sydney for the obvious reasons <3

A trivia night! The faculty asked one of my clubs to run it and I'm the person allocated to it (mainly because I was kinda really keen). I honestly thought like only 2 people would be interested, but I have ~33 people coming, so I'm mildly surprised tbh!

Oof, good question. My favourite is probably Ben Smith, from The Black Mark in Melbourne. The detail in his shading is insane. My personal favourite is the first photo in the spoiler, of the marble statue. As much as I love looking at realism tattoos, I wouldn't get one myself -- I prefer things that are colourful and more abstract. That said, he's still my favourite artist

Ahh that's totally sick! Already a big fan of this dude. I see he does a lot of Japanese-style tattoos (Irekumi?), which is actually my favourite style. If I can keep my head on one design for the year I'll be planning on starting mine haha. Feel like I should bump your old tattoo thread ;)

Some things I do / enjoy:
- Karate (I've been doing it for about 7 years and it's my only extracurricular outside of school atm)
- Year 7 Transition Program leader aka doing fun stuff with the Year 7s and telling them what high school is like.
- Cooking/following recipes
- Singing (I was in choir from prep to Year 9)
- Listening to either upbeat or chill music
- Spending time with family and friends
- Nature
- Running and doing other forms of exercise every once in a while despite being incredibly uncoordinated.
- Playing with my aunt's dog Geoffrey whom I share a backyard with. See picz below :)

Would love to hear more about your running. Pls give me tips.
I run about 5-6 times a week. This breaks down to an easy jog on (some) Mondays and (all) Wednesdays, Faster repetition work on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and longer run on Sundays. In addition, on most Saturdays I will have a race of some sort (In the summer this will be track races, and In the winter this will be cross country). In terms of track racing, I tend to focus on the longer events such as the 1500m, 3km and Steeplechase, but do get around to do most events if only just for fun. Currently, we are at the closing end of track season and I have just run in the victorian champs for steeplechase with success, so I am off to the national championships in Sydney soon.

In terms of advice, consistency is key to improving fitness (I think you're mainly just looking to improve your fitness right?). I'm not a training expert, but I've heard that HIT style training is the best bang for your buck (better than just jogging about) but I'm sure there are plenty of better-educated people that can correct me on that.
If you're just wanting to go for jogs, I would recommend finding people or a group to run with if it is practical to do so. Also, trying to do a Park Run (Have you heard of them) every Saturday will not only give you a run to do with a bunch of people every week, but will probably motivate you to do a bit of training to improve times.

I do theatre three nights a week (I have a French clowning class on one and working on a production on the other two). I mainly do devised, experimental and new writing theatre. I act, write and devise. I am also in the production team for upcoming shows for another experimental theatre, where I'm organising services that will make the show more accessible like captioning, AUSLAN interpreters, tactile tours, audio description, discounted tickets, and relaxed performances. I also actively volunteer in a community violence education project, doing organisational, facilitating and writing workshop outlines work. I also mentor youth who have incarcerated parents or are in foster care. I occasionally play soccer but mostly avidly avidly watch it. I'm getting into squash. I write tv pilots and long-form narrative journalism. I used to debate competitively, but the training nights currently clash with my theatre commitments (I still judge and coach student debaters which is pretty fun). I'm currently in love with Russian Doll on Netflix and will watch 'You" after I finish that. I got Bumble over two weeks ago and have been on a couple of dates (also currently casually dating someone that I'm into whom I've met from there), I like going to the beach in the summer. Also read The New Yorker religiously. Hanging out with my friends (one of them whom I've met somewhat recently is really into Melbourne's indie music scene so she's introducing me to it). Also working on various independent applied Anthropology projects.

Everyone’s hobbies and interests are all so interesting  ;D

For myself, literally anything I do with my boyfriend is the best. Without him, I don’t think I’d even be attempting to keep an active life or investing as much as I am in Marvel movies. I’m pretty sure I’d try anything in his company because we just have so much fun.

In high school, I was quite involved, especially in Year 12. I was in school choir, debating and public speaking, girl’s futsal and performed heaps throughout my years at PHS. While I’m only really involving myself in music-based activities now, my other commitments were really rewarding.

I love watching cartoons! I think that’s apparent from my profile picture but figured this would be a great place to make it official  ;D I watch anything from Miraculous Ladybug, to Regular Show. A lot of my favourite shows have ended during or after high school so I’m hoping to find new things to watch in my early adulthood life ;D

I also read a lot but right now, that’s largely reading prescribed texts for Tutesmart so how much of it is work and how much of it is extra-curricular  ::) In my own time, I read young adult romance novels, lots of children’s literature and adult fiction as well. My favourite authors include Rainbow Rowell, Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler and Jodi Picoult. I love poetry too and have a shelf dedicated to poetry collections and anthologies. I frequently read The Prophet and my Edgar Allan Poe collection.

And as a music student, my extra curricular activities surrounding that include being in Choir at uni (which is my mandatory performance unit but I love it anyway!), recently being a volunteer performer for VSA and I’m hoping to launch some covers with my boyfriend once uni settles down a bit. I’m a huge trash for musical theatre so I’m always finding things to sing and learn  ;D

Don’t think there’s much else about me  :o Will edit if anything else comes to mind  ;D Excited to hear everyone else’s interests!

Hobbies:
- Reading, especially literary canons (when I run out of things to read, I literally look up the reading list for a literature course and get some recommendations from there
- Writing, specifically articles. I need to do something productive even during my break or I'll get restless. Like, after finishing my Year 12 half yearlies, I jumped on my laptop and started writing articles for a week straight because I needed a break from studying
- Playing video games. After my HSC exams, I played video games for a month straight (meanwhile, a lot of people in my school when to parties). I love open world games (e.g. Assassin's Creed, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy) because I'm a level grinder- in fact, I love video games so much I did my Major Work on it lol

My stuff atm:

- I'm events co-ordinator for the Monash Advanced Science and Science Scholar Society, which is a society for my course and the research course
- I'm an Access Monash Mentor. Last year when I did the program I was helping a year 9 and year 10 group to enact projects in their communities, and this year I've got 2 VCE students. I'll be helping them survive VCE, learn how to study, develop career skills etc.
- I've got a business I'm running (due to uni but by far most of the work on that will take place outside of uni). Kinda had a lull period and need to fix some things up - I've got an assessed pitch on Tuesday which is kinda scary.
- obligatory mention to atarnotes
- I'm going through a self paced online course on marine data science. Currently a bit frustrated because it feels like I can't get the code to work but that'll pass - excited to learn these skills
- I like reading but don't tend to make time for it unless on breaks & on breaks you can also often find me camping.

I was extremely involved in extracurriculars in highschool (music, public speaking, leadership etc) but I'm challenged enough in uni that I don't really need all these anymore

- Play tennis
- Watch TV shows (at the moment I'm watching the good doctor)
- Hang out with friends and family
- ATARnotes
- Listening to music on spotify
- Read the news
- Every once in a while, I try to run

PROMPT: What extracurricular activities do you do? Why?

Very late to the game aha!

Ever since I started studying film, the lines between my extra curricular activities and my tertiary education have been blurred. Surely editing and camera work can still count as extra curricular even though it is part of my degree.

I enjoy watching commentary Youtube videos (in regards to film, shows and Youtube drama aha) and also makeup tutorials. I also like to try and recreate some looks but never have the right materials for it lol. I try to paint and read books every once in a while when I do have spare time.

I like to go to the gym as well and have time for myself to exercise.

Not crazily involved in much school extra-curriculars but I do try to have a life outside of study :)

- I like driving on weekends (gotta get those hours up so I can advance to my red Ps later this year!)
- I play piano and take AMEB exams for it (I'm currently on grade 3)
- I like listening to music genres that allow me to concentrate when I'm studying (lo-fi, k-rnb, classical - piano) though I'll guiltily admit I still jam out to songs and unabashedly sing to their lyrics out loud when no one's listening  ::)
- I bullet journal and calligraph (occassionally) as a stress-reliever
- I do daily yoga and meditation
- I keep a journal where I rant about my day (used to be a record of my diet habits)
- I enjoy CLEANING (yes, I'm a freak) and sometimes it gets to the point where I procrasti-clean... Like I put off studying just to rearrange items on my desk
- I mentor students online by essay marking and giving study tips/advice to current hsc students (through insta, email, AN etc.)

I also used to occupy my free time by reading, now I'm super lazy and I end up sleeping to youtube videos on autoplay  :(

Other than work I don't do much... but ok. Here:

- I enjoy writing although I'm not very good at it. I do know I am improving though so that's good. Practice makes perfect!
- I like taking long trips (by myself). It's kind of relaxing driving places and not having anyone with you since you can stop as many times as you want and do as you like.
- At the moment, I'm listening to past Eurovision songs getting ready for Eurovision 2019. I'm always pumped for this time of year, it's a little exciting to see how different music is in other countries.
- I watch a lot of Netflix which is probably bad. I'm watching The Order at the moment as well as The Empress Ki (K-drama) which has 51 episodes.
- I also talk to my friends, who are currently at uni, a lot. I always rant to them about how bad work was or how annoying tafe is at the moment. I don't voice how I constantly miss them though that would be a bit clingy.
- I play piano (Not as much as I used to) and I'd love to get back into that. No exams though. They suck. Definitely don't wanna do Grade 6 AMEB.

Anyway, I think that's enough from me. As you can see I am not very interesting since all I mainly do is sleep, eat and work.

- Sitting in traffic for countless hours on a daily basis. Essentially from 7:30am to 5:30-6pm every day I am either driving or at work. Only gives me a few hours to breathe outside of work. I commute a fair distance to work (about an hour one-way) but I do it because I've been given nearly everything I wanted in a job so I can't ask for much more.
- Working (and even working more when I get home - the teaching profession sometimes sucks, its hard to get a work/life balance in such a professional and responsible occupation). It's probably only going to get worse in the future given I am an ambitious person.

Actual extracurriculars/hobbies:
- Coding/Development/Tech in general. I started with simple web development back when I was about 14 or so, got involved in some MMOs and started practicing some scripting and really built from there to where I am today. I have a ton of mini/side projects I've made, some public some not. I am actually a very competent programmer/coder and have a degree in IT, know about 6 languages to an advanced level off by heart. I have always been into computers and I suppose being a social outcast has meant I have had ALOT of time to myself to self-teach stuff.
- AFL. Love my Roos... actually it's really a love/hate relationship. Have followed them pretty much all my life, membership for the last 5 or so years.
- Single player gaming. Ask me 5 years ago i'd be the perfect definition of an introvert. But teaching has definitely forced my hand to get a bit more social (clearly). However I still like to take time away from everything and just play a few games on my own... call it my release.

When I was younger I did a lot of sport - swimming, tennis, martial arts etc. but it has died off (probably about the time I transitioned into the whole 'im going to turn into a tech geek now'). I love AFL and love the Aus Open when it comes on, but apart from that i'm not really into it anymore. I am a very competent swimmer and hold a black belt in martial arts (probably the last thing you'd think I would have lol). I have trophies from back then which sit in my wardrobe and accumulate dust but yeah...... history. I can STILL (it was years ago) recall the moment I won a stick sparring tournament. It was a great feeling.

To reflect.. I probably made the right decision to give up the sport for the tech as I now have skills not many others have. In a world where tech is dominant and will only become more dominant, it definitely has its perks.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a dentist for some reason. I couldn't remember why, and this was like, when I was 5, so it's a bit strange when I think back today. But I guess I kinda always knew I wanted to go into the science field.

Throughout primary school, I wanted to be a vet because we had the neighbour's cat visit us a lot and we took care of her. I started watching a lot of RSPCA and Bondi Vet (throwback to when Chris Brown was on the show) and I would even start researching about the different pet breeds and various diseases each breed is prone to. I even had a folder of notes whenever I would do this research, but I don't know where it went.

It wasn't until the end of Year 5 when I realised how much I loved science, especially physics. Part of it was because I started watching Big Bang Theory and I really wanted to understand the physics jokes (especially the one where Leonard asks "What would you be if you were on object on an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?" and the answer was screwed). Because I was so interested in physics, I would straight up read science textbooks and Stephen Hawking (I have two of his books at home). I genuinely wanted to become a physicist until my science tutor told me (when I was in Year 7) I can't get a career in physics. It was kinda harsh but I started to do job hunting and research, which is where I found engineering. At first, I was interested in biomed but then realised how much I hated biology lol. It wasn't until in Year 9 when my math tutor told me that engineers still don't know how flight works, and that's when I became interested in aerospace. I started reading up on the theory of flight, Bernoulli and Newton's Laws.

It's been a long journey, but I really am enjoying my ENGG subject. Hopefully, I can survive uni without failing and find a job either in the new Australian space agency or go to Europe. I would go to NASA but the US is a bit messy, politically, at the moment. Plus, I heard retirement is great in Europe (disclaimer: I heard), they're generous when it comes to funding in science (once again, I heard) and education is free there (especially Denmark) so if I decide to do some postgrad work, it's an option.

I'm almost at the end of EIGHT years of study and I still don't know! Currently trying to sort that out, but I think I'll honestly be one of those people that just slowly drifts between careers without a clear idea of where to go with it.

I'm still trying to decide if this is a funny story or a sad one but I actually wanted to be a florist growing up. I have a great interest in flowers and growing up, I always envisioned myself becoming one  ;D

However, fate is never on my side so I discovered that until maybe last year, I had really bad hay fever and reacted terribly to pollen. A young me didn't seem to care much about it but obviously it just wasn't meant to be. I'm hoping to pursue gardening more when I finish studying so I can still live that dream  ;D

As for what I want to do now, I'm currently studying with the hopes of becoming a secondary school music teacher. Music has been a huge passion of mine for a long time but I had no idea what I wanted to do with it. It wasn't until Year 12 that I really knew I wanted to become a teacher. I had great teachers in my school's CAPA faculty and they became my second family in a way. Their selflessness and kindness inspired me to pursue teaching myself.

I also think that being a teacher will allow me to continue being a lifelong student myself, constantly finding new ways to learn and grow. My major in Musicology reflects how invested I am in the study of music and I aim to let that guide me as a teacher. I hope to foster a positive, classroom environment for making and studying music because without that kind of space from my own teachers, I wouldn't be where I am now studying at my dream university and doing what I love most! I think that if I can get every student I have to at least love one thing about my subject area, it will be more than enough of an achievement  ;D

I'm hoping to also teach overseas at some point in my life before I settle permanently here. I'm not too sure where that would be but it's definitely something I'm looking into. That's basically what I'm up to in a nutshell :D Excited to read everyone else's stories  ;D ;D

I genuinely don't think I really had any clear cut thing I wanted to be when I was younger. I think I always liked the idea of being in the emergency services but didn't have a particularly strong preference for what I wanted to do.

Fast forward to now and I'm halfway through my physio degree and I've wanted to be a physio since about year 10! Unsure what I want to specialise in at the moment, but definitely know I want to do hospital physio. Just waiting to see what the future holds for me :)

Primary school: I want to be a marine biologist!
Year 9: I want to be marine biologist focusing on ecology!
Year 12: I want to be a marine biologist but all these people are saying that since I like biology I should be a doctor...  I should keep options open for biomedical engineering?
Now: I want to be a marine biologist focusing on ecology, and within that do lots of science communication and analysing & interpreting data!

I can see myself transferring my skills to a policy or education related career later, but marine biology first :)

Primary School: I have no clue what there teaching me but im good at it :P
Highschool Year 7:  alright time to take studies legit because I wanna be........
End of year 7 I actually started preparing for Selective School Exams but didn't really put 100% effort. On the day of the exam I saw the most amount of Indians and Asians ever ...in one place...super competitive and to this day reminds me of the competition I got compete with. (btw I didn't get in :'()

Year 9 : Biggest waste of high school, nobody cared at all and honestly regret that year
Year 10: Started grinding a bit more and really enjoyed psychology and chemistry, decent at maths and also found that fun
Year 11 (current): Doin Chemistry, Methods, Specialist, 3/4 PSYCH, English and Legal Studies
unfortunately even though I like spec I feel like I won't be able to cope so dropping that for further

also did the best thing of my life today!!!

Signed up for ATAR notes Lectures for April.
Super excited to attend and LEARN  from the best

I also wish to pursue a career in medicine after I had Jaw surgery.
The surgeon really inspired me and I am set on going into  med
wish me luck ;D

So when I was little, we had firefighters and policemen show up to preschool and primary school for incursions. Basically, they were the coolest people ever (to my naive mind) and I wanted to be a firefighter/policeman.

Then, not long later my uncle said I was a smart kid and I should become a doctor. (original story, i know). But this basically obssessed me for a while because literally every other smart kid I knew was told they could become a laywer, dentist or doctor or engineer. Stereotypical and toxic, but that's the way it was.

I'm not really sure when I gave up on becoming a doctor, but it was definitely sometime in high school. Quite a few reasons why: a) effortwise and resultswise I wasn't doing as well (I lacked a lot of motivation) b) it was unrealistic and c) I don't think I was prepared to go through med school and all that to become a doctor.

Nowadays, I don't really mind what I become, as long as it helps somebody. However, what interests me most is science, and something in that field would be really nice. But I still have no clue as to what I want to do; everyone around me has pretty much decided and they have goals; so they're a lot more motivated than me. But helping as many people as possible is the dream :D

Growing up, I wanted to be a teacher. I absolutely loved pretending to teach my toys throughout primary school and felt inspired by my teachers who were passionate and dedicated about teaching and their teaching area(s).
Quite a few of my family members are graphic designers, so I was introduced to Illustrator in mid primary school which sparked my interest in that field - but it's more of a hobby to me now.

At the moment, I'm not dead set on a certain career but I want to do something that involves education, science, and making an impact on peoples' lives (which can occur in many careers). Also, train driving sounds like something to consider. :)

Edit: also wanted to be a spy/detective haha

When I grow up and be a big boy, I want to be a teacher. :)

I have always wanted to be a teacher, just have been shifting from primary and secondary over and over. Ended up with secondary, purely because I can get the adult environment as well as the 'let me act like im 12 again' environment (I'm currently teaching on a junior campus so my entire role at the moment is isolated to 11-15 year olds). I have a full degree in IT so my thinking was also if I went into primary i'd be flushing my knowledge down the drain. Meh, might be a gloom view but it's not necessarily false. Also was a teaching associate/tutor/demonstrator at uni level so I also got a taste of uni lecturing and in the end I just saw how sad (emotional) the computer science lecturers were and I wanted to run.

I toyed with the idea of a career in IT at some point due to the financial incentive but in the end the will to be happy over the $$$, was the winner. Don't regret my decision either. If I had one bit of advice to anybody going into uni and choosing a pathway for their future.... happiness over all else. Do what you want to do and don't let prestige/ego/expectation/etc. get in the way of it. Life's too short.

I spent a lot of time in hospitals as a kid, so my very first ambition was to become a doctor and do what they did. I kept this ideal until I was about 18, when I started to have doubts.

Nowadays, I'm split, but I'm hoping I'll have an answer by the end of next year. My options are:

Path 1) Medicine. No idea what kind but hey, it seems interesting af, instead of putting 'Mr' when I sign up for Beanie Baby forums I can put 'Dr', and it opens up opportunities into education or research. So I suppose this path includes medical research -- even if I don't end up with a professional med degree. I'm just not sure if I'd like to dedicate the immense amounts of effort and time into pursuing this.

Path 2) Electrician. I love working with my hands and it's some pretty interesting shit. Electrotechnology is probably the most conceptually complex trade, and it allows the most opportunities to go further and specialise. I suppose the biggest issue is the effect it'd have on my body, as a lot of tradies damage their bodies as they get to middle-age, which isn't fun.

Path 3) Education. My Physics teacher was one of the most profoundly influential person on me as a teen, and certainly helped put my life onto a better path, so I know it's a super critical time period for young people. I also used to host revision discussion thingos in Yr 12 haha, and helping a group of people learn a concept was super satisfying. Being a Science teacher would be swell.

I think the first career option I thought of was becoming a scientist. There wasn’t really a specific field that I was leaning towards but I enjoyed science class back in primary school and thought that would be a good option for a career.

I then suddenly did a 360 and planned on becoming a fashion designer. I was obsessed matching up clothes and designing them. I even remember buying a design kit when I was 11 and sewed little cute dresses.

High school hits and I suddenly wanted to become a Youtuber. I looked at it as an option since I watched alot of Youtubers at that time and thought it was an easy way to make money. I pretended to make vlogs. Good thing I have deleted all those vlogs because those would’ve been so cringe to watch aha.

It was in Year 8 when we got asked to make a film for our English assignment and thought that was cool. I always had filmmaking as a backup as a career option since I wanted to explore more job options before I hit university.

My obsession with Law & Order: SVU as well as my involvement with Mock Trial at school made me want to become a lawyer. It was so cool seeing the ADA’s on the show defending innocent people. It felt good having to present facts on the mock trial stand. I was going to do Legal Studies in Year 11 but the teacher who taught it was so bad at advertising it (kept saying that it’s not like tv and said there was a lot of readings to do) and that put me off from wanting to become a lawyer. Plus the ATAR scared me so I looked away. I also wanted to become a criminal detective because of SVU but I realised how unfit I am for the role so I decided not to pursue that career.

When I joined ATAR Notes back in 2017 and started answering questions, it allowed me to build self confidence and teach people in real life. I had fun teaching my classmates. My art teacher inspired me to want to teach other students as well. Being an art teacher was one of my career options. I do intend on becoming an art teacher one day. Perhaps when I’m 50 when I’m old and wise aha. My art teacher also worked at the local art gallery as well as an educator. Think I would like to do that as well.

It was around Year 11 when I wanted to pursue a career in film. It hits me in Year 11 when I did a mini film course and I’m like “dayum that was fun. No way in hell do I want to do a career that involved so much research and readings and whatnot”. Plus it was a creative career that involved technology. I’m not exactly pursuing fine arts. But I’m not pursuing a science/IT career. It was deadset in the middle. I’ve consistently been editing films since I was in Year 8 so my heart was set on becoming a film editor.

After first year of film school, I now realised that I don’t want to become a film editor. I still want to edit but I want to edit advertisements, promotional videos, lookbooks, reality tv, etc. I’m much more attracted towards the non fiction side of the screen industry then the fiction side. I literally started second year yesterday and we had a super cool lecture about non fiction content and that gave me reassurance that I do want to work in non fiction. I’ve also grown to love producing films as well because there’s something about filling out paperwork, sorting out the logistics of things and having the final say in things really appeal to me. It’s refreshing not working on the creative aspects of film so producing is another route I would like to pursue.

When I was younger I wanted to be a primary school teacher.
When I was 6 I wanted to be a race car driver and a mechanic.
When I was 12 I wanted to be an actress.
When i was 13 I wanted to fly jets in the Air Force.
Since I was 15 I wanted to be a paramedic or a Outdoor Educator (Did work experience at Lord Somers Camp)

Over the past year I've considered going into the Audio Visual industry as a Lighting/Sound Tech as I've got experience from working paid gigs and and volunteer and I've really enjoyed it...Apart from the sexism I've gotten for being the only local female technician which is so frusturating and the pessimist in me is waiting for the day I get turned down a job cause I'm female
Open spoiler if you're interesting in reading my experiences as a technician PS ain't very interesting
Spoiler
Lighting Tech / Load In/Out Crew for Summer Nights 2019
- Rigging and patching of lights, mics and speakers
(Worked with The Teskey Brothers, Saskwatch and Caiti Baker)

Lighting tech for a local theatre group
-Rigging and patching and operation of board (all stage lights) and domes (followspots/moving spotlight)

Tech manager for school productions
- Rigging and patching of lights
-Teaching new techs how to operate board and domes

Lighting Tech and Sound tech/mic tech for talent/perfomance nights
-Rigging and patching of lights
-Putting/Taking off mics on singers and actors
-Repairing mics
I'm currently working as a Pool Lifeguard and Party Instructor and am hoping to become a Swim Teacher.
Back with the paramedic thing I've been volunteering with VICSES for just over a year and a half and I enjoy serving the community so that what was led me to thinking I could be a paramedic and the more I looked into it the more interested I became and that ideas stuck with me since.
Like I'm heading with idea so far cause out of all my ideas it requires the highest ATAR (85+) but i really don't know where I'm going  ???

Totally forgot to reply to the latest prompt

The earliest career aspiration I can remember was wanting to be a detective, because TV shows. There was a few years where I wanted to be a pilot - probably because I didn't go on a plane until I was 12 but they were always flying overhead so I was quite fascinated. Would still love to get a pilots license one day, when I'm much richer than I am now.

Obviously the whole love-of-animals-and-water thing has always been there, but I don't think I ever seriously considered it as a career when I was a kid. The love for fishies and biology really became a thing around year 10. Now I'm aiming for something marine biology related, but that's a bit of a niche area to be trying to find a job in, so more generally something to do with environmental science. Also still studying human biology, haven't quite decided if i'm just doing it for interests sake or if I'll end up doing something with it in the future.
My SciCom tutor is a marine scientist who does work to change people's behaviour in order to help protect marine species/coastal environments, and I really want to know more about his job haha.

I have two main fears!
Hospitals (and medical appts) and dogs.

Hospitals and med appts as I spent a LOT of time in and out of doctors clinics and hospitals when I was little when mum was sick (cancer) and it's scary when you're a little kiddo and you don't know if mum's coming home and the doctors and nurses were scary af :')

Dogs because my dick of an uncle scared me with one when I was younger and I've been scared of them since. Not even working with them has knocked it out of me :')

Fear of being alone/abandonment
Dad left when I was 5 (might be part of the reason) and now I'm terrified of being alone or people leaving   :-\
Also bugs - not bugs in general but rather when theres loads of them...hate them crawling near/on me or stepping on them they just a lil gross

My biggest fear would be the fear of not being stupid/the fear of making a fool out of myself.

Any group I am apart of socially I always question whether I actually belong and whether I am accepted. Even long time friends and groups I have been apart of for a long time I am always paranoid that no one is accepting me. Even though their actions say the complete opposite when looked at rationally.

I think my only real fear is being helpless and/or having to depend on other people.

I'm also terrified of being trapped underwater - I blame my brother for that. When we were little he used to hold foam pool mats over my head and I wasn't strong enough to push them up to breathe. Kind of still related to feeling helpless though. Also anything that stops me from being able to breathe properly makes me panic a lot, but I'd imagine that's somewhat a normal response

I'm pretty scared of heights. Seems generic, but I just look down and gulp inwardly and feel like I'm floating a second from death. It's this really weird feeling that I'm scared of.

Not really a fear, but I'm also really averse to being subjected to high velocities/forces ie. theme park rides. I usually only go on the tamer ones.

Failing has always been a big fear for me, when I do (by my lofty standards) I sink into a hole that I won't get out of for a few days.

I think my only real fear is being helpless and/or having to depend on other people.
Also this. I know I'm 100% dependent right now (speaking more materialistic-wise) but mentally and emotionally I'm really scared of opening up to other people/depending on them for support.

I haven't contributed yet but I might as well

I think my biggest fear is not being able to see. I panic in water when I can't see the bottom, or in caves/unfamiliar places when I can't see ahead or behind of me at all. Complete and utter darkness. Both in the physical sense and in theoretical. I can't see the future, even the little things like 'will I get to work on time' and that brings me immense anxiety. At the same time, something like someone getting injured or dying in the near future and that I could have done something to prevent it is a common irrational fear.
Probably doesn't make sense but there you go. 🙄

Rats. Give me massive heebie jeebies.
My mother had a pet rat. His name was Ralph. But he died because my grandpa fed him 7 Up and he ODed on alcohol

I think my biggest fear has to be death. Like I always wonder when, where and how will I die? Is there an afterlife and do I reincarnate into something else? Or do I just die and that's it. I always joke about 'I'm here for a good time not for a long time' but in reality I only joke about that in order to cover up my fear of dying.

my biggest fear is getting stuck with a 9-5 office job, sitting at a desk all day.
My dad has his own business and somedays I used to come to work with him (weekends) but he just sits at his desk all day on his computer.
BORING!!!  >:( >:( >:(
hence why I got a job at KFC so I could avoid going to work with him  (don't tell him  ;) )
nowadays im just focusing on getting a decent ATAR (by decent I mean above 85) so that I can apply for the courses I wanna get into...which will hopefully lead me to some pathway in medicine. Whether that be a surgeon, pathologist , or even biomaterial engineering.

I'm pretty good with most things, but one thing that does get my teeth on edge is barbed wire. For somereason whenever I'm around it I always tell myself that I'm gonna fall and cut my face on it - even if the barbed wire is half a meter above my head.
Do you find that to be a good motivator to get things done in life, or does it get in the way?

In the past I would've phrased this as scared of being "a bad person" but now it's more not being enough. Good enough, effective enough, impactful enough...

When I'm in a relatively healthy headspace (such as now) I don't think about it too much but it's the best answer I have

Do you find that to be a good motivator to get things done in life, or does it get in the way?

I feel like it depends on the situation- if it has to be between eating healthy and eating what I actually like- I’ll pick the second option cos I’m like “I only have one life why bother pushing myself to eat healthy when I have the choice to eat whatever I want?”

But also when an opportunity comes up and it scares me or don’t think I’m good enough, I’ll brush it off and be like “eh there’ll be more opportunities in the future. What’s the point in embarassing myself?.

The only interesting political thing I have seen recently is egg boi.

I find it all soooo boring. I am starting to pay attention to what parties are doing what now the federal election is coming up but I really just think whoever we elect there will be controversies and scandals and everyone will hate whoever gets elected in.

"What are your thoughts about politics? Interesting? Boring? How involved do you feel?"

I love politics but listening to politicians just makes me wanna rip my hair out. Australia's party system kinda sucks in my opinion - our PM seems to change every 5 seconds and we have all these small parties like the HEMP Party.

I'm probably not that involved with Australian politics and parties but I'm pretty into political/social debates. I'm a pretty big supporter of feminism (gender equality) and it upsets me that more guys aren't supporting women because i think your gender shouldn't dictate your opportunities and rights

I'd like to think I'm politically active at least. It's pretty damn interesting to monitor the rock bottom pinnacle of human society which we're governed by :)

English classes aren't really English, it's mostly me and my best mate looking at BBC, ABC, SMH and a ton of other news sites and looking at sport and politics (though mostly politics) arguing about how dumb our politicians are, and internationally as well. Even if we can't vote, we enjoy proposing new solutions to things, but mostly HAHAHA LOOK HOW DUMB THIS IDIOT IS is honestly good enough for me. And considering that when we last had a prime minister that served a full term, the iPhone didn't exist, there's a lot of idiots to be interested in keeping tabs on. We're both reasonably leftist, so like all the rightist articles suddenly become weirdly interesting reads, even if we don't agree with them. So all in all, pretty complex and interesting :)

I've never paid much attention to Australian politics since it confuses the hell out of me how there's so many parties to choose from. I've had a bunch of people from uni yesterday explaining the different parties. But they pretty much said that there isn't a distinct party, rather every party has its pros and cons. (**Note: I'm not an Australian citizen so I didn't vote in the latest election for the NSW premier and all that)

American politics kinda makes more sense because there are two distinct parties- the Democrats and the Republicans. I'm only aware of what each party represents but don't know much about the specifics.

I really should read more into politics because I care about social issues such as Women's reproductive rights, LGBTQI+ rights etc. but I actually don't know which parties correlates to my values. When the time comes, I should exercise my right to vote.

I think I care more about social issues than politics - although obviously they're very much linked.

Also kind of hate politics though. Listening to politicians argue just gets really sad. I really can't figure out why they think/say a lot of the things that they do. Also feels like there's not all that much that happens (aside from constant scandals). It's just people saying that things should be done for a long time and no one doing anything until wayyyy later when it's a popular position because they're too damn desperate to get re-elected.

I find politics interesting (even if somewhat frustrating) and could even see myself having a career related to that.

In highschool I did some work experience in the office of a member of the legislative assembly and was youth mayor of the local youth advisory council (these periods of time did not overlap at all btw) so federal is where I have the least knowledge.

Any time you're trying to make decisions for a massive group there are going to be issues & just like the rest of the population there are going to be people who we vehemently disagree with; I wish there was better communication between politicians and people from different views to help people understand even if they don't agree. As long as we stay away from these discussions because they're too hard or not strategically valuable it will be hard to have any semblance of cohesion (imo).

Can’t say I was ever "into" politics but it’s always a huge part of my life - with a left-wing mum and a right-wing dad politics is always our favourite conversation starter at the dinner table. To me, discussion is the most important aspect of politics - we will never get anywhere unless we allow everyone to express their opinion, no matter how much you disagree with it.

Spectrum-wise I had always been a full-fledged supporter of the left until two/three years ago when I started drifting more towards the centre. I am a believer of the horseshoe theory - that the far left and the far right are actually quite similar. To me, it’s ridiculous to completely align yourself with either side, as you’ll end up supporting whatever that side supports without thinking to yourself whether it’s something that you truly believe in - you essentially lose individual thought and become a pawn controlled by the media and those around you.

I don't have a favourite type of weather, but I just want consistency. I'd prefer the day being completely hot or completely cold rather than the morning being extremely cold but by the time we reach the afternoon, it's really hot and I'm just there sweating in my trench coat.

Favourite: Cold. Not wet.
Least Favourite: Hot and sticky/humid weather.

At least when it's cold you can add layers of clothing... unfortunately when it's hot you only have a limited number of layers you can take off before an unbearable sight appears.

Also.. wearing business attire on a near daily basis, cold weather ensures I don't sweat which is nice. :)

I like cold grey weather.  And variety.
If I could cut out summer, Melbourne weather would be my absolute ideal.

Those quiet, cool, grey days of gently melancholy peace...

The wild, exhilarating, stormy days of lashing rain and biting wind that make you feel so alive...

Or, you know.  Hot sticky days where you endlessly sweat and prickle and boil and everything sticks to you and breathing is thick and yucky and exercise is unbearable and you feel smelly and sticky and disgusting and the sun beats down on you and aggressively burns your eyes and skin 😍 (not)

Favourite: A nice 20-something degree day where there’s still clouds dotting the sky and you can feel just the right amount of sun on your face. Great for a walk outside to get some fresh air. This seems to happen in early Autumn and in spring. (I don’t favour spring as much though, since hayfever is a thing. Many of the people around me get it and I feel terrible for them. Also, early autumn means you can be blissfully ignorant of the impending flu and cold season.)

Least favourite: Do you remember those days in summer leading up to thunderstorm asthma and it was humid, sticky and hot, then suddenly it dipped and it still felt gross? That. It sucks, it’s sweaty and it kills. Literally.

I can't think of any one single day that would be my favourite, but two of the times that come to mind are both on high school camps. The day we dug up a turtle nest and found baby turtles, some that were half in their shells as we pulled them out, and then got to release them into the water, has to be one of my favourite things to have done. The other one that comes to mind would be the week I spent canoeing down the Murray, specifically the day when we got to the spot where we were going to stop for the night and then decided to continue for a few hours after dark to get to the end - it was absolutely beautiful canoeing at night, and the whole day was heaps of fun. If I had to pick one week to be my favourite overall, that week spent canoeing would be very high on the list.

Thinking about this has made me realise that pretty much all of my favourite memories have been doing things in nature (which probably isn't actually all that surprising)

@J41, you have to actually answer some of these questions yourself :p

I would say my favourite day has to be second day of Year 9 camp. School camps always make me feel like I’m on a different planet because it is nice to have a break from your home life. We did absailing, the flying fox, watched The Devil Wears Prada, tried walking to the main cabin from our one in the dark (really dangerous but was also funny as well since we were bringing along our sleeping bags and pillows), had trivia night as well. I also really liked first day of Year 12 retreat. Again, it was the nice natural environment that made me really appreciate the world we lived in.

Would love if my uni had a camp. Camps are usually the place where I learn a new thing about myself and grow I suppose.

Hate to get all philosophical and stuff but it's hard to pinpoint a favourite day ever because I feel like life is full of highs and lows that you can't really compare. You've got loads of different kinds of happy and it's really damn hard to choose a favourite day, maybe because I've forgotten many of the details in the past or whatever.

That being said though, in recent times today was pretty good (Spurs 3-2 Ajax #COYS), so was the day I got my maths results from this sem (probably the best results I've ever gotten for any subject), the exhilaration at the end of exhausting hikes in Year 9 and 10, winning an academic decathlon with my mates in Year 9, finishing the tennis season a few months ago, and loads more I can't even name. Probably the thing that all those moments and days involve is pain leading up to them and effort (watching Spurs 3-0 down at half time on aggregate, all the revision, energy loss and hard hiking the whole time (literally crumpling on the train on the way back after Year 9), the struggle of even completing some of the tasks, and the toughness of the training sessions), then finishing in pure happiness that makes the pain worth it. That's probably the key point when it comes to having a good day for me, even though I can't pick any one day :)

Like most have already said I think it’d be hard to pick one day in specific that’s my favourite ever, but there’s one memory from late last year in particular that I think I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

It may not seem that significant to others, but after one of my friend’s 18th, I ubered home with a really good friend (that I’ve known since year 6), he was basically one of my first good friends that I made in Australia. And on the night that we ubered home it turned out we were locked outside the house, so we decided to literally just lie down on the footpath (we were both quite drunk) and talk. We’ve opened up to each other before but this night I think we just completely spilled everything in each other’s life and I fell like we connected even more than ever had before. Funny thing is, neither of us have ever brought up that night again so I don’t even know if he remembers, but I’ll never forget it.

Woah... That honestly sounds so beautiful. I definitely think it's significant, it's one of those really rare, sublime times you'll share with someone that can just be purely platonic but so special no one will ever be able to understand or comprehend its meaning but the two of you. I very much doubt he doesn't remember, I think just like you he'll always remember it, it sounds like an unforgettable moment you'll both always treasure. Idk this really touched me a lot, I hope to experience something so profound and beautiful someday. Thanks for sharing this.

I would probably have to say I really could not care less about ‘modern’ fashion and those overly complicated or minimalistic outfits that are displayed at catwalks. However in terms of presenting myself I obviously would like to look decent, though I don’t really know if my ‘style’ is mainstream. I tend to just wear trackies with a hoodie when going out with mates or jeans and a shirt (and maybe a jacket) if it’s a more formal occasion.

PROMPT: How much do you think you care about fashion? Is your type of fashion mainstream?

I don't really have an interest for high end fashion and fashion shows- they're simply not my taste. However, when it comes to my own fashion I do try my best to look good. Ever since starting my tertiary education, that's when I've become more aware of how my clothing can impact first impressions as well as my self confidence. I do have three different looks: Japanese schoolgirl/international student (feels like im about to sign a business proposal and attend my high school classes all at the same time), broke art student (baggy clothes and layering) and normal (wearing plain jeans and a top- usually wear this when I'm not at university.) I suppose going to an arts college adds more pressure on needing to look good. It genuinely feels like I'm in a fashion competition at uni and the one with the best outfit gets the most compliments.

Ooooo well when I was suuuper young I fondly remember watching Thomas the tank engine almost 24/7 ahaha. I had a shit ton of train sets as well so I guess that's that. In terms of later years I started to watch a decent amount of disney but one show that stood out was 'Zeke and Luther,' which was a show where two sk8er bois just went around doing random shit from what I can remember at least. This is actually the show that pushed me to start skateboarding eventhough I was really scared of falling off at the time.

As a kid I remember watching a lot of Bob the builder and Postman Pat - but I seem to remember that being more because it's what my younger brothers were watching rather than it being what I watched.

Chitty Chitty bang bang got rewatched so many times in my house that I reckon i probably could have started reciting the lines from it (haven't seen it in ages, should probably go rewatch it sometime).

There was a movie me and my (slightly) older brother used to rewatch a lot when we were young (before primary school, but I don't know how old exactly). It's one of the earliest memories I have (or at least one of the earliest that I have an approximate date for). No idea what movie it was though. Something about lions.

I was always more into reading books than TV when I was a kid though (probably because we had one crap TV between 6 kids lol).

When I was slightly older, but still a kid, i watched a lot of horrible histories and time team (had a slight obsession lol). Early teens I got a bit obsessed with sci fi and watched every episode of stargate in a ridiculously short time frame. Then rewatched them.

I'm sure there were others but I can't remember any of them. Distinct lack of the simpsons and similar shows because I wasn't allowed to watch them :'(

I grew up with a lot of anime when I lived overseas, some of them being:

Sailor Moon
Detective Conan
Doraemon
Pokemon
Fruits Basket
Ouran High School Host Club

They always broadcasted these shows during prime time so every Saturday I'd wake up earlier than my family to watch the next episode of Detective Conan or Sailor Moon.

When I moved to Australia, they didn't really broadcast anime (I think at some point they broadcasted Vampire Knight and Ouran High School Host Club on ABC 3 or something) but I did watch a lot of Tom and Jerry and Mr Bean.

What's your opinion on the early seasons v. the later ones?

The earlier seasons have more originality and more of an aloof plot. It gives the viewer a supposedly unknown scene and plot to each episode. However, with the new episodes, I find that it reflects moral ideals and issues facing society. The episodes are somewhat predictable in nature but the refinement in the animation really assists in storytelling (i miss those wacky animations you get when you randomly pause on an old episode though...). The new episodes aren't boring as many fans propose and I really hope the series continues well into the future (probs won't though :'(). The Simpsons just require it's silly plot lines again. What're your opinions?

Interesting. I find it difficult to say because I've barely watched anything post about Season 12 or 13 or so. I'm so in love with Seasons 1-10 that I started finding it difficult to watch newer stuff, so in a sense I'm sort of ignorant about the new ones.

Personally, I've watched something like the first 24-26 seasons - but basically nothing from the last few years. I would disagree that the current episodes reflect current issues/situations more as I think this has always been quite a strength of "The Simpsons" series.

As above, can't comment on basically any of the newer stuff, but definitely agree that older episodes absolutely nail social commentary.

Always wanted to do outdoor rock climbing. Almost did a few time but then the activity was cancelled :(

Used to regularly practice indoor rock climbing in (year 8-9 I think?) and enjoyed that + have done some outdoor abseiling which was fun (especially after I trained myself out of fear from my 1st failed attempt).

I love heights & as someone who grew up being very short for their age most of their life being able to reach high places was especially nice :)

Learning another language. I've always wanted to be fluent in another language other than english (preferably Russian) but life seems to get in the way and I never dedicate enough time to learn even the basics. I keep telling myself I will when I've finished school, but even then I've already got so many plans I don't think learning a language other than english will fit in to those plans.

Learning a musical instrument. Never learnt as a kid and I think it'd be cool to be able to play one, but it's very difficult to do with both money and time constraints now as an adult.

Learning a European language. I've been very interested in German since I spent high school learning about German history, but also Germany has a thriving space agency so it would work out nicely (I've been considering an exchange, but I still need to do research on it).

I've also been meaning to learn how to use softwares such as AutoCAD or Python, or even simpler ones like Excel. I've heard how valuable these can be in Engineering (definitely AutoCAD and Excel, Python as well maybe) and I know that they have online classes on these subjects (e.g. Skillshare, Coursera) so I'd like to spend the holidays completing an online, self-paced course on one of these areas.

Learning an instrument and learning another language are classics. I can play a bit of the guitar -- but not enough to say I know how. I can have very rudimentary conversations in Bulgarian, but I haven't made an effort to improve on that in years. I'lll get around to one of these things -- they're near the top of my list. Unfortunately, 'make a list' is at the very top of my list.

I love tattoos, so ideally I'd be covered by this point haha, but given I can't due to trying to keep a professional image for whatever-my-future-career-may-be, this is not the case.

Learn an instrument- specifically the guitar. I did do a couple of guitar lessons when I was young but quit after months of lessons. I do regret that decision up to this day- so pursuing guitar again would be cool. Would like to learn how to play the violin but I don’t think I have time to learn an instrument nowadays.

I’ve always been fascinated by ice skating as well. Would like to know how to use Adobe After Effects because I would like to pursue motion graphics in the future.

Like Calebark mentioned above, getting a tattoo would be cool. I’ve wanted either a star (representing one of the symbols in my country’s flag) or a semi colon. Probably won’t get it now. Maybe in the future when I’ve moved out my house.

I want to learn how to sew and knit and crochet and embroider really badly. I find the idea of make clothes and blankets that are personalised and made exactly for you or someone you care about really interesting and I think I'd enjoy it a ton

I want to move overseas and work as like an au pair for a year or so, I think that would be really interesting and I love languages so having the opportunity to work on them in the native country would be great.

I've always wanted to do a triathlon. I love swimming and riding my bike (and I use to do a bit of running) but I just never have. I stopped swimming a couple of years back and haven't been on a run in forever so I think that I'm a bit nervous to start back up because I don't think I'd be very good. I'm thinking that it will be a good future endeavour, perhaps when I have more time to go to the pool.

PROMPT: What's an activity/endeavour you've always wanted to pursue, but haven't?

It's been a dream to own my own horse and learn how to ride it. I'm really not that advanced - I barely ride because all the horse riding places are very far away and are expensive. I've gone cantering a few times, and I absolutely love it. I always have a massive smile on my face as I'm whizzing past the trees and other people and it's only my horse and I. It honestly feels like we're flying. Hopefully when I'm older I can actually go to proper lessons and maybe even get my own horse!

I've also really wanted to learn a type of martial art. I've always been into fighting and the techniques associated with it, but I've never actually gotten to learning anything. Self-defence can be a very useful skill in this world right now too - but I'd mainly like to learn for the sheer curiosity and because it sounds super fun.

Okay this one is a bit extreme - but travel the world. I've always wanted to visit some of the world's most beautiful flora and fauna, as well as seeing the aurora borealis. I'd love to go to the safaris and national parks, as well as deserts and oceans and, I guess I have a lot I want to see :D. The reason I want to see so much is not just because of the obvious reasons, but also because I love to draw, and there's nothing better than sketching things you see with your own two eyes (I mean, Disney didn't bring real animals into their studios when they were animating for nothing!). Just the way animals move - the anatomy of their muscles can only really be grasped when you go out there and actually see it. The experience is so much more different from drawing looking at photographs. I'd love to end up with a sketchbook full of drawings of different animals, plants, scenery and buildings. It would be a once in a lifetime experience!

Starting up a Youtube channel! I have this vision of combining my musical endeavours with my education studies where I cover a bunch of cool songs and then do a little song analysis/deconstruction at the end of the videos. The idea behind it is to teach musical concepts in a more practical way (i.e showing how it's been applied in the music itself). I think musicology can greatly enhance performance experiences so I figured this would be an ideal way to have my own side project as an educator, alongside study and work. I've just never had time. It's definitely something I want to pursue long term though  :D You'll all be the first to know about it  ;)

That would be so cool and I'd totally watch it even though I know nothing about musicology. I started up a YouTube channel this week (something I'd been thinking about for a while) and it was surprisingly easy. Would totally recommend and can't wait for an update!

Probably Saturday! I feel like I have the whole weekend ahead of me and generally, it is the centre of all the fun things I do. I see friends on Friday night and Sunday morning so on Saturday I feel happy because I've spent time with some awesome people but I still have more to look forward too. I also get to do lots of fun things on Saturday with some very special kids at work and then spend time with my family in the evening.

I also have a rule that I don't do homework on a Friday night or a Saturday Instead, I get most of it done during the week by waking up early. Not sure if this will change as I get further through VCE, but at the moment it is working pretty well for me.

Fridays.

Mondays are the start of the work/uni week, so it sucks.
Tuesdays are ruined by the thought of Monday.
Wednesdays are the middle of the work-week, so there's a small bounce here.
Thursday days are shit as you're exhausted, but the nights are great as you know tomorrow is Friday.
Fridays are amazing because you know you have the weekend afterwards.
Saturday is a downer because by the end of it your weekend is half over.
Sundays are just the ads playing before the movie that is Monday.

As such, Fridays are best, not for the day themselves, but for the anticipation of an ideal weekend that never comes — reminsicent of some tragic Sisyphean task. In this essay I will...

Bumping for a new topic for this thread: It's been a while- tell us about yourselves (if you feel comfortable too!)- do you have any fun facts about yourself, or weird quirks that you do?

A fun fact about me: I'm a sucker for arcade games and have hit over 9000 "powertickets"* playing at Timezone arcades on my old card (which I had to retire because it isn't a tap card and that's what my local one is slowly moving to) (*sometimes with the help of my siblings or Rui :D )

Lightning round quirks  :)

- All good things end in 0 or 5. I will wait to end a call for an extra few seconds if it means they end up on those digits. Absolutely hate seeing numbers like $9.99 because please just round it up.

- Picked up bowling after a breakup as a coping mechanism, now it's my official hobby. I'm currently sitting on 145 as my personal best and hoping to get much better over the year.

- Thinks some Disney sequels are better than the original films. Most controversial opinion is The Lion King II being better than The Lion King.

For The Lion King Franchise it really is:

TLK 1 > TLK3 > TLK2

For what other films does your statement apply to?

I can agree that in terms of animation quality and storyline, TKL I is a classic but TLK II has the best music and I think its message about racism and division rings true today. If it had a better budget and more fleshed out character details, it would've rocked but then again, it didn't need that for me to love it as much as I did.

Other sequels I prefer include Peter Pan II: Return to Neverland, Cinderella III: A Twist in Time, Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch and recently Frozen II. Also really like the music for Mulan II but Mulan was definitely superior.

(This is probably going to spark a debate and I'm totally cool with that).

Here are a few random facts (or mini essays, whoops) about me:

- I'm an avid gamer, more specifically RPGs and open-world games. Yes, I'm the self-proclaimed queen of side quests. I will finish EVERY single side quest and level up my characters to its maximum level before finishing the main story. Fun fact: I completed every single contract in The Witcher 3 before completing the main story (plus the two DLCs), and with FFXV I completed ALL side quests before finishing the main story, including those stupid fishing quests (mind you, this is the Royal Edition so extra lore and side quests).

- I've broken my nail 5 times in my life. When I mean nail, I don't mean my nail polish chipping off or losing nail acrylics, I mean my actual nail being ripped from its nail bed.

- For being a bibliophile, I really hate YA fiction. I think they tend to promote toxic tropes, an example being the "I'm Not Like Other Girls"/Cool Girl trope (there are great video essays breaking this down on Youtube but my favourite would be by The Take). I think I've also reached that cynical state that no novel can ever have a completely original storyline so you're gonna have to wow me with the writing style. And the YA books I've read are almost like Wattpad/fanfiction material (no tea no shade but like *side eye*).

- For someone who's studying engineering, I prefer writing reports over the calculations because I find it to be the best way for me to get my ideas organised instead of having lines of equations scrawled all over a scrap sheet of paper.

Hehe I'm actually starting to enjoy being active on the forums, so Imma give this a whurl.

A fun fact about me:

I have a ridiculous obsession with languages.

It all started in Year 5, when I realised my native Filipino wasn't up to par with my six-year old, recently imported self. I sorta got obsessed tryna re-learn Filo, and then eventually, I realised that other languages exist, and I dabbled in them too :) If I could list them off the top of my head, I've played with Spanish, French, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, German, Dutch, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Italian, Russian, Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic and Bulgarian.

So far, Spanish and Dutch are the ones I managed to push up to fluency- well, fluency as in I can talk about stuff like climate change in those languages haha.

But yeah, my dream one day, is to take as many languages as I can up to fluency. One of my Post-HSC resolutions was to go back into language learning, which had to go on the brakes ._. Rn I'm thinking of self-studying in Korean and Portuguese for 2020!

Sorry I'm a language nerd, but it's such a thrill, when you're talking to people in other languages. I sorta develop my own little persona in each one (no I don't have multiple personalities someone said that to me once lmaooo)

SAMEE FAM I'M A HARDCORE RPG COMPLETIONIST OMGG. My favourite series growing up was the Dragon Quest Series. I will literally do everything. Like finish every side quest, buy every possible equipment, max out every class/skill tree- I just graduated Year 12, and I'm only now remembering how much I missed doing this during junior years ;(

Omg nice to see a fellow gamer! Most of my gamer friends are into FPS/PVP but I'm to asocial to play with others lol

And yes, I do the same as well! Max out every single skills and equipment and spend a good 1 hour organising your inventory from hoarding items xD

Any games you're playing at the moment? I recently bought a PS4 (I had an Xbox One before buying a new console yikes) so I've finished Spiderman, God of War 4 and now playing Horizon Zero Dawn.

I felt that omggg. A lot of my friends are gamers too. But I go solo for most of the games I play :D

Yesss I'm actually playing 2 different games atm ahahahaha. I decided to yeet back to the good ol Nintendo DS and play some of the old Dragon quest games, mainly Dragon Quest V. They're not overly popular here in Aus, but one of the things I love about this series is the story. It's so riveting omg. (I'm a really big sucker for stories + Medieval swordfighting RPG with monsters and magic). However, rn I'm hijacking my brother's playstation, playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey!

Some quirks (I guess) about me-

- Favourite fictional character is Scarlett O’Hara from Gone With the Wind, despite her questionable morals.

- I never went to primary school. Instead, I was in a circus full time for five years before high school.

- I have an older brother who I lost contact with when I was 5. I ended up accidentally finding him through Subtle Asian Traits on Facebook at the end of last year.

- I failed my L’s the first time. I just booked my Hazard Perception test and I have a feeling I’ll fail that too.

- as you can tell by the time I’m posting this, my sleep schedule is non existent.

Of all the three test for driving (L's, Hazards, actual drive test) Hazards was probably the only one I wasn't too confident in. Be prepared for the graphics of the test to be super grainy (something like a 1990s video game) so you really need to look close to see if a car in front of you is breaking and also it can be difficult to make out road signs. The biggest mistake people make on this test is thinking that they need to click for every single question. There isn't always a hazard within the video.

Before you start you get 4 practice questions. These are important as they they are the only questions you will get feedback on directly after the question. Do this set of 4 questions at least twice and make sure you know exactly when to click - these questions can come up on the actual test.

From memory, the test has a question bank of 90 questions and they give you 28 so the difficulty can vary quite a bit. Of the 28 I would guess you don't need to click for around 25% of them.

Here's a small list of things about me:

- I'm a huge film geek: not as much as I want to these days, but I'm definitely into filmmaking from directing to cinematography and stuff. I also hope to write and direct some short films in the next few years, maybe a feature film? Who knows!

- I'm also very passionate about healthcare being accessible to all walks of life. I feel that being raised in a privileged society we have a responsibility to serve those who are struggling and help them reach the level as we are if that makes sense. I hope to work in rural areas as a doctor in the future (at least for a period of time).

- I used to binge-watch study tube, which is basically high achievers taking you through their day and giving you tips on how to study. I think I watched most study tip videos, but I'm kinda over it now. Still watch it every now and then, especially medicine vlogs.

- I'm a huge fan of Rick and Morty, and I love season 4. People are hating on it, as the show creators have only released 5 episodes after a huge break, but every single episode is so detailed and complex that I understand why they took so much time.

- I also love Bojack Horseman, another TV show similar to Rick and Morty, but much more personal and character building. I won't talk about it too much, but everything after a few episodes of season 1 is great, I binged all of it in a few days ;D

Small edit: Clarified point #2 ;D

I'll join in and say a few things about myself

- I have an obsession with baking and I wish I had more time to do it. I made lemon macaroons last week for the first time and they turned out surprisingly good?! I also love reading the science behind it all, I find it fascinating how it all works and how technical it really is!

- My all time favourite show is Gravity Falls. My brother and I have been obsessed with it ever since we saw the first episode. We compare ourselves to the characters in the show and surprisingly relate a lot (although I am yet to get a pet pig :/). Also so sad that the show only got two seasons, it deserved so much more  :'(

- I have a need to follow through with a lot of things e.g. i'm still watching Riverdale even though the show has gotten ridiculously bad and the plot literally makes ZERO sense (lowkey want to see how bad it can actually get)

- I love staring into the night sky and wondering about the mysteries of the universe.
Oh yes I love the sky at night, it is so pretty, I could stare at the stars for hours upon hours

- I can quote select Disney movies line for line, and will bring random quotes for multiple Disney movies into conversation where possible

- Also I can make a noise that sounds exactly like the Predator from the movies  :P

Time to join the hype train :)

- I'm a huge fan of Rick and Morty, and I love season 4. People are hating on it, as the show creators have only released 5 episodes after a huge break, but every single episode is so detailed and complex that I understand why they took so much time.

Fan here too :) Totally agree with all of this, I could honestly wait quite a long time for every episode because you can just rewatch it and dissect it over and over and still find new ideas every time. Probably one of the most complex shows I've seen - love it.

- I don't like big crowds. Loads of random people creep me out, and in general crowds of anything are just weird.

- Love Pokemon. It's just a huge thing with me - got a DS and Pokemon when I was 7 and never looked back. Ever since I couldn't keep up with consoles and newer games (latest game I own was released in 2012, on the Nintendo DS), I've sort of resorted to 'borrowing' off friends and cousins, and investing my focus elsewhere (online battle simulators, mobile games, Trading Card Game). The card game especially is a money drain, but totally worth it. Looking to get back into the games soon :)

- I like a lot of different sports and will play whatever with friends, but personal favourites are football and cricket. If there's a BBL or IPL game on somewhere or an international I'll always have an ESPN tab open tracking the scores and if something's on free to air TV I'll probably be watching it. Also a big Spurs fan, and I'll try and watch every game I possibly can even if they're at like 3am in the morning. It also doesn't have to be a Spurs game; could watch anything and still be fully interested - but Spurs is the one team I'll back all the way.

- I also enjoy wandering around aimlessly, I've walked for really long periods of time just deciding randomly where to go.

Stumbled across this and honestly why not :D

- I love the lion king (all the movies). My all-time favourite. I know every single dialogue in the first and second movies by heart and I cry when Mufasa dies every single time. My mum always tells me that I watched that movie over a thousand times in my childhood (I watched it like every day lol).

- My previous (foster) dog is currently in the Nothern Territory working in the airport as a sniffer dog! *proud mum moments*

- My favourite tv show is Grey's Anatomy - it never gets old!

- I passed my driving test with exactly 78%

- I have never broken/fractured a bone/pulled a muscle (I didn't think this was a big deal until I found out that basically everyone had done one of those three things at least once before)

- My favourite book series is Sarah J Maas' Throne of Glass series - I own all the books and I love rereading the series!

- My favourite songs to listen to are those by Kehlani or Selena Gomez (closely followed by Tinashe :) )

That's awesome :) it's really great to see someone with similar aspirations to myself, although I do veer towards wanting to provide better healthcare for people, in particular children, with disabilities that serves to their overall health and quality of life,  rather than just the ailment they present with. (more specifically again, those with disabilities who are unable to access the healthcare they deserve - whether that's due to money, living rural etc.) You would make an amazing doctor if you do decide that's the path you want to take :)

That's amazing! I veer mostly towards the mental health aspect of medicine (at least right now), which deserves a lot more talk such as breaking down stigma and generally help people live a better life emotionally. I don't know much stuff on it, but I hope to research more about it in the future. It's great that you want to focus on disabilities- it's something I thought about here and there, I hope to delve into it much more in the future, as I have almost no knowledge of it right now ;D. How did you get to this aspiration?

That's incredible. Mental health is so important. It's amazing (sorry that sounds insensitive - I just find it fascinating) and terrible the things your body does when your emotional health is poor, and also how your mental health and brain chemicals can be changed from having health issues. You're inner voice is a lot more important than people tend to think. I also would love to know more about this area - I'd be especially interested to see the mental health of people with intellectual disabilities and how that would play into it.

This is probably going to be a long explanation :) It's been a long journey haha

Well, when I was a lot younger, I was tossing up between being a vet and being a doctor (mum laughed it off as a phase haha). I've always been drawn to healthcare, bodily functions and dysfunctions fascinate me :) I was actually leaning more towards wanting to be a vet, because I figured animals would be better patients :) Then when I was 10, my father passed away from motor neuron disease. We'd had him at home for the entirety of his diseases progression (6 years)  - from slurring of speech, to needing a wheelchair, to being hoisted around and fed - and this was before anyone really knew what MND was. I was at the hospital with him before he passed and the doctor had no clue about MND. He was on the phone with a lot of other people trying to figure out how to treat my dad (and there was absolutely nothing he could do) but watching the doctor do everything in his power to help my dad and see him looking so defeated after my father passed,  really inspired me.

About six months later, my niece was born prematurely (at just 24 weeks). As you could probably imagine, she has a host of health issues -severe autism, nonverbal, epilepsy, brain injury from encephalitis, etc. I thought I had experience with people with disabilities after my dad, but it was a whole other ball game. And I realised how uneducated I had been about it. And then, over the many years of watching how other people treat her, I also realised how uneducated a lot of other people are about it - not to the fault of anyone, but even a lot of healthcare professionals out there just don't understand how to act around people with disabilities.

My niece also has eating problems - she doesn't understand that she has to eat, so if she doesn't feel like it or if she is stressed,  she just stops eating. She has the peg now, but she had used nasal feeding tubes before. I watched 2 nurses hold my niece down while she sobbed to try to get a nasal tube up her nose. Forty minutes later, my niece collapsed back in exhaustion - from the look of it, I would have said she passed out for a couple of moments. For hours afterwards, I thought to myself - this would never have happened to a child who could say no. If a child without the disabilities my niece has needed a feeding tube, but didn't want one, they would have tried (for a much shorter time than forty minutes - or at least have broken it up to give them a moment to catch their breath), but when that didn't work, they would have figured out another way - like possibly getting an anaesthetist in.

But it wasn't the nurses fault. They didn't know any better. How much time of their studies had been dedicated to treating people with disabilities? Not much. Which is silly, because people with disabilities would surely need to see doctors and nurses more often,  right? They do,  after all,  have more health issues than the average person. Unfortunately, because so many people are uneducated about disabilities, they also don't see that more education would fix a lot of issues and get these people better healthcare.

To be honest,  after going through all that, I don't think I had much choice in my direction in life haha.

I must note though, I have met a number of healthcare professionals - mainly through my niece - that have absolutely understood how to treat my niece and their other patients with disabilities in a respective and effective manner. They have further inspired and taught me the kind of care that unfortunately many people with disabilities don't get access to.

Sorry to rant - I get a little too passionate about this subject hahaha :)

Whilst I'm on this thread:

-I can't write anything without it ending up being an essay in length. I don't mean to. I really don't :)

-I secretly love really bogan music, like the stuff with the heavy Aussie accent. It's bloody hilarious.

-I write books, but I'll never tell you more than that. If I ever do publish, it'll be under a different name haha.

-I grew up in a haunted house.

-I love Chinese food so much that I genuinely think it will be cheaper for me long term to just invest in a restaurant in exchange for free food.

-I am probably one of the most contradictory people I know - I love rap music and classical, I am strictly logical and believe ghosts exist (though not the way most people see them - it's just energy) etc. I don't even understand myself :)

-This is probably one of my shortest posts.

-Oh, and I have really long hair (almost past my bum) but it's no where near the length I want it. I won't stop until it's a little under the back of my knees.

Why do you think this is contradictory?  :)

Maybe knowing your favourites from each genre will give more context haha

Music is becoming more and more genreless and at least from my experience it definitely isn't uncommon for someone to appreciate the best from many "genres".

Why do you think this is contradictory?  :)

Haha, it's less that I think they're contradictory, than they tend to be placed in those categories. As you said though, it's happening a lot less nowadays.

I mean, I love 2016 Golden Era Records Cypher https://youtu.be/alPNKJ3IXxM and also Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, so... :)
(Also, is it just me or would dance of the sugar plum fairy be the perfect music for a horror scene starring giant spiders terrorising people?)

I'm so glad I found Hilltop Hoods - their restrung album had rap to a classically inspired backdrop and they're my staple songs. I think they actually used a choir when they went touring with that album, which would have been amazing live. So, they, like you said, blur the lines between genres.

fair enough... I agree that with casual music listener's and anyone not properly exposed to each "genre" may still hold those sort of views haha

Extracurriculars
I currently do Venturer Scouts, however I used to also swim, do Karate, and was part of the Australian Air League. Not sure if it’s an extra-curricular but I like riding trains and planning events
What I want to be when I grow up
When I was younger, I wanted to be a teacher because I wanted to inspire kids. I also wanted to be a paramedic and an ER nurse because I was interested in the medical field and I really enjoy helping others. Now, I really want to work in the commuter rail industry and implement a better rail system
Fears
Loud noises, people scaring me, any sort of exotic food
Thoughts about politics
Not really into it, it’s confusing for me and I don’t like causing debates with people that have different views
Favourite type of weather? Least favourite? Why
Favourite: Sunny days but not too hot, it’s the perfect weather to go outside
Least favourite: Thunderstorm, I’d be soaked in 5 minutes
Favourite day ever
31st March 2019 because I got to attend an event with Scouts and I got to do what I really love – ride trains and plan things. I also met some amazing friends
Favourite TV show
I never watched TV growing up, wasn’t exposed to it besides watching the footy with my siblings. Now, I like Jonah from Tonga or we can be heroes (Chris Lilley!)
What's an activity/endeavour you've always wanted to pursue, but haven't?
Drive a train
As a rule, what's your favourite day of the week? Why?
Wednesdays. It’s the middle of the week
Favourite quote?
“Our life is a constant journey, from birth to death. The landscape changes, the people change, our needs change, but the train keeps moving. Life is the train, not the station.” -Paulo Coelho
I like trains, but I really like the quote because it means that we should keep moving on from hardships and things will pass, whether they’re good or bad

I would say two things:

A) Your health whether it is physical or mental, is more important than any number you will receive throughout the year, and it really isn't worth destroying what you have built up.

B) Follow you instincts. I made the mistake of believe that I could do well of just doing assigned work (which was already a very high workload). No, what earlier me should have done from the start, was to a little extra work everyday so that it never built up and became overwhelming. It's easier to do something for 10 minutes everyday, then 10 hours a day for two weeks straight.

SHUT DOWN YOUTUBE!  :D Or at least, avoid it as much as possible for non school-related content, in order to prevent yourself from finding lots of new great channels. This will only be temporary until the HSC is over.

PROMPT: If you could give yourself at the start of the year advice based on what you know now, what would it be?

1. To enjoy every moment
2. To not stress over things I cannot control.

- Give Riggy lots of pats because you’ll miss him (but you’ll get to meet lots of other cool dogs later)
- It’s okay if it takes five goes to do something that should be very basic, you’ll get there in the end
- Start your assignments early so that you’re prepared for any unexpected happenings closer to the due date
- Don’t cough in front of paramedics during a pandemic (although it makes for a funny story at least)
- Maybe just skip the paramedics entirely and try and figure out how to ask for help yourself.
- Enjoy the opportunities available to you whilst they’re there, you never know when something is going to take away the possibility of doing it in the future
- A hospital is better at fixing never ending sadness than alcohol is.

I'm intrigued.
Suicidal and drunk Morgan coughed in an ambulance because I’d been throwing up and was put in the coronavirus section of the acute ward. It was a very unpleasant and scary night but I find it funny now (and tbf I thought it was a bit of an experience at the time too).

PROMPT: If you could give yourself at the start of the year advice based on what you know now, what would it be?

This one is tricky but I'd have to say be careful what you wish for! Every time I head to campus, I would say things like "wish I didn't have to do this bloody trek", "I only have one class today so what's the point of even coming here" or "if I only I could just study at home." I would definitely advise my early 2020 self to take all of those words back in a heartbeat because you really don't know what you miss until it's gone so enjoy things while they last!

PROMPT: If you could give yourself at the start of the year advice based on what you know now, what would it be?

- Actually make plans with people while you can. Video chats are nice but it's not the same as seeing people face to face
- Invest in good devices instead of wasting your money on things such as clothes and makeup. You have so many clothes and makeup already- invest in devices that could help kickstart your career! (looking for a drawing tablet right now to purchase hello)
- Hug your friends a lot more; I really miss hugging my friends
- Stop complaining about your job. It might be shit to work at a pharmacy previously but now- I'm grateful that I have still have my job when some of my friends have been forced to leave Sydney and return to their towns. Being an essential worker at this time helps me balance the pandemic that's happening now and my life prior to the pandemic.
- Go on campus instead of "studying" at home. You're missing out on the unique studying environment on campus and the facilities that you have access to.
- Really focus your energy on the people that really matter
- Appreciate the outdoors a lot more instead of being on your computer 24/7
- Bruh just really appreciate the taste of spaghetti while you can. There was a month gap where I didn't eat pasta because of the panic buyers and that made me sad because spaghetti is one of my favourite meals ahaha.
- Be honest with people and be yourself (so cheesy but it's true)

Haha, actually not too bad! I didn't even feel anything hit my head, as the helmet was fantastic. I dislocated and fractured my right arm, my right side was purple from bruising for a bit, and I was limping for a few weeks, but that's about it. Other than a few minor scars on my arm and knee, you can't even tell I was an idiot!

This was during the long weekend in late January. Thankfully I'm fully healed, which means I'm all set to do it again

New prompt!
What's the first book you remember buying or reading?

First one I bought? I remember saving $20 (in a month) to get one John Green book back in year 10 (2014)

First ones I read? I remember being read/reading Pony Pals when I was like 5 🙈

First book I bought: I cannot recall, but one that sticks out clearly in my mind is Eldest. Why I bought it before I had even read Eragon, I do not know.
First book I read: the Bible, with my family, every night. :)

First one I bought: Think it was the first ever Diary of a Wimpy Kid book when I was 8 years old

First one I read: I honestly can't remember the exact one but I remember reading "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" when I was in Year 1
Title: Re: Get to know you series :) [CURRENTLY: What is the first book you bought/read]

First book I bought: This took some memory retracing as well a re-examination of my small home library. My first actual purchase was the Big Nate Big Six-Book Box Set from Costco. I was obsessed with the Big Nate comics and read all the ones available in school. When I saw it, I carried it to my mum, begged until she finally gave me permission to buy it with my pocket money (yes, I needed to ask her first) and read through all six within a week  :)

First one I read: I absolutely cannot remember to save myself. I have always been surrounded by them so I have zero idea what my first actual read was. If we count being read to, my grandma read me The Little Prince every night to put me to sleep. My first independent read though was probably a book from kindergarten but I have no clue what it was.

Really thought-provoking prompt by the way, insanipi!

I think the first series that I remember reading myself was the famous five by enid blyton. I remember my mum reading deltoras quest to me and my siblings when we were young but i'm not really sure which came first.
I'm not sure what the first book I bought was - I never bought any as a kid except perhaps from book shop vouchers because I had 5 siblings and practically a whole library at home already (I'm not joking, we must have had at least 10 bookcases full + what we had in our bedrooms. Dad built a bookshelf designed to cover one entire wall of a room.)

During semester holidays I found myself binging about 6-8 episodes a day and I absolutely LOVED watching it!!! Its sooo funny and relatable! I really think that show is quite underrated..

I'll go off the categories that you have listed!

Albums: folklore and evermore- thank you Taylor Swift for dropping not just one but TWO new albums this year. I still haven't recovered from Lover and all of sudden she drops two new albums. Three of her songs from folklore (august, exile and the 1) were in my top five most played songs on Spotify.

Books: So Much I Want To Tell You: Letters to My Little Sister by Anna Akana- I haven't been reading much books lately (in the past five years anyways because I just didn't have time to read books but also lost interest) But I got this book for my birthday when I had briefly mentioned to my close friend that I've always wanted the book. I finished the book within 3 days. I was so hooked. I love Anna Akana and her videos on Youtube. Reading this book made me feel much closer to her. She writes the book as if she's giving her little sister advice. Akana has a way of capturing your attention by giving well written out advice.

TV Show: I finished watching 'How I Met Your Mother' after starting binging it in November last year. My god. I've probably at least rewatched it at least 4 times by now. I fell in love with the characters, the advice that it shared, the stories that it had and so much more. It such a simple concept that was done so well. After watching the show the first time round, it really did make me consider how the different people I've met, the friendships I've made, the experiences I've been through, etc. has shaped the person that I am today. I can't thank the show enough for this.

Movies: I've watched quite a lot of films this year so there's plenty to choose from. I think some standout films that I've watched this year have to be Parasite (2019), The Apartment (1960) and Booksmart (2019)

Food: I've discovered how great the Garlo's pies are (I get the Lean Beef). I've been getting more into bubble tea too aha. I've also been eating a lot of Greek Yoghurt lately (the Chobani brand in particular)

Books - listened to a number of audiobooks this year, my favourite was the Tattooist of Auschwitz. Really moving and incredibly well written.

TV - Chernobyl and new season of the Mandalorian are probably my favourite shows that I've watched this year. The new season of Shetland is also up there.

Podcasts - This Podcast Will Kill You, No Such Thing as a Fish, Behind the Bastards, Off Menu, You're Dead to Me. All kept me entertained on drives to work and placement!

Hobbies - my only real hobby is knitting, and this year I knitted my first pair of socks (well, I've done one sock and currently working on the second) which I'm really proud of!

The other thing I liked in 2020 was finishing my uni degree! I also bought my first car.

TV shows: Young Justice!!! Also so many other good ones ( Emily in Paris, Elite, Babysitter's club, Community, Never Have I Ever). ahh now I'm looking through my viewing history on Netflix and remembering so many good ones I forgot about --> Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Locke and Key, Spinning Out, The Witcher.

Podcast: Charlie and Ben podcast. Highly recommend!! It's actually the best podcast I could listen to, they talk about all kinds of stuff - philosphy, psychology, business, (American) politics, personal growth, current events, etc. They have interesting perspectives on many issues and I've learnt not only information, but also *how* to think for myself and form my own opinions and views on the world. It's helped me feel a little more 'worldly(?)' I guess. All the random topics they bring up I find very interesting, and it has changed my view on a few things. Also they seem like cool role models/inspiring.

I love Anna Akana and her videos on Youtube.
Same!! I get so excited each time I'm notified she's posted a new video!! I haven't read her book but it sounds like it's good from how you've described it, I'll have to read it next year!

^Youtube channels: I have two favourites, bestdressed and Anna Akana. They are both such cool role models to me and their videos are so high quality and engaging.

Hobbies: soldering silver rings! I've still got a lot to learn, but I enjoy being able to put time/effort into creating small that feels like it's quality and permanent. There's a lot of room for learning new techniques and making things that are more complicated in the future too.

Books: did not read many books this year, but really enjoyed 'The Darkest Web' a true crime book that gives three stories of real events that have happened on the dark web (get a little dark at some points). It seems like another world. I really like how in the first story the author positions the audience to empathise with these online drug lords, the police almost seem like the enemy as you read hoping they don't get captured or found out.

This was definitely a year of me discovering some damn good music. Here's my list for y'all to peruse:

Here's the list of them for those that would prefer to peruse on another platform:
Race Car Blues - Slowly Slowly
Melbourne - Slowly Slowly
Small Talk - The Dead Love
My Friends - The Dead Love
Who You Are - Stuck Out
*Equip Sunglasses* - Hot Mulligan
Funeral Home - Yours Truly
Shimmer (from Triple J's 'like a version') - Hands Like Houses
The Water - Hands Like Houses

There is this one show that all of my siblings used to make jokes about, called ‘Malcolm in the Middle’. Its basically about this poor/middle class American family with four troublemaking brothers who get into a lot of mischievous (but very funny) situations..

The fact that you feel the need to explain what Malcolm in the Middle is makes me feel disgustingly old, ngl.

I definitely know that show. I never watched it on a season to season basis but have randomly watched a heap of the episodes (but this was ages ago ahah).

ahhh exile came 5th on my Spotify wrapped

It's been a while since I've had a rewatch of HIMYM, I think it recently came back to AUS Netflix so the time might be right??

Yes for community! rewatched it countless times (most recently end of last year iirc).

Albums: have I mentioned how much I like Amira Willighagen's three albums (I discovered them free on YouTube a while back). Amira (mostly opera) Merry Christmas (Christmas songs) and With All My Heart (classical crossover I think). (these links ought to work. they're also legal in I think most countries, or at any rate Australia.)
Books oh no ATAR addled my brain I just spelt that boocks argh: Been getting really excited once more about Melanie Dickerson's books; I own 'The Healer's Apprentice' (#1 in Hagenheim series) and found 'The Captive Maiden' (#4 in same) at the school library. Planning to buy more of the series soon! :) (It's a Christian romance type. If you like romance, strongly recommend, if you're offended by Christian mentions don't read it.)
Movies/TV shows: Does North and South (2004 BBC miniseries) count as TV or movies? Anyhow, I rewatched it and rekindled my love for the character of John Thornton as played by Richard Armitage I think? Now I inwardly grin whenever I see Thornton come onto the scene. And as for movies, watching The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was... an experience, since it kinda went differently to the book, though I did enjoy it, a lot. Whoever played him is not Caspian, but Eustace was Eustace to the ground. And Reep. :D
Podcasts: - (don't listen to them)
Poetry: I don't want to hear more of Old/New World (English text). Though some bits were quite okay.
Food: Favourite foods of 2020? Too many options - my mother is a good cook! :)
Games: Many games played with family in person are a lot of fun!
Hobbies: Definitely writing my current novel-in-progress (first draft still) though it's fallen a bit by the wayside. Playing the piano. And singing has emerged as great fun while out exercising - while I can't belt it out (well, I can't really anywhere) it's really good for my asthma as well, I reckon (at least breath control feels better, though that doesn't show on statistics, and I feel less panicky less often about catching my breath). Perhaps next year is the year I learn Nessun Dorma? :P
In some ways - not all, not most - I would say something else I liked to some extent was actually lockdown - for an antisocial hermit like myself, it was great not having to deal with people. But I do happen to like my family, and thus missed them.

Books: My top two favourite books right now are probably A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson, and Brief Answers to the Big Questions by Stephen Hawking (one of my goals for next year is to read a lot more, so I'm interested if my answer to this would change at the end of 2021).

Movies: My all-time favourites are: Interstellar, The Theory of Everything, Imitation Game, Inception, Shutter Island, and Freedom Writers. I also love horror movies and spend a lot of time watching them. Also series such as The Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Divergent - love them.

TV shows: The Walking Dead, Cobra Kai, Atypical, Brooklyn 99, The Office, and The Big Bang Theory

Podcasts: The only one I have actually taken time out to properly listen to is "Grownups Read Things They Wrote As Kids" - pretty entertaining

Food: Butter chicken, pumpkin soup and anything Mexican :)

Games: I've played a lot of Cards Against Humanity this year (I even bought Cards Against Muggles which I'm dying to play). Pretty fun.

Hobbies: My hobbies include piano (tho I haven't played as much this year as I would've liked) and scrolling for hours and hours on TikTok

Album: Razzmatazz by idkhbtfm

Goddamn there's some good songs on that album. I swear I've listened to it a thousand times already.

Highly recommend checking them out. Here's some of my favourites from the album:

https://youtu.be/GBRCGf81jwY

https://youtu.be/BybwPRtaFUw

https://youtu.be/bSRbIE8c1HU

https://youtu.be/9q_nAZaLCZA

https://youtu.be/BH48aquxExc

https://youtu.be/1GlvjGn131o

https://youtu.be/jdZ8h7P2LyI

And yes, I have just linked half the entire album haha it's too hard to choose!

Hobbies: colouring in. I bought myself some water colour pencils and a couple of sci-fi / fantasy adult colouring in books. It was great to not just stare at a screen lol my weekly screen time dropped by a lot haha.

I've also started writing again. I've got a few ideas in the works for some short novellas. Who knows, one of these days I might actually finish one of them ;D

I have also very recently started up a new hobby. I got a telescope for my Christmas present/early 21st. I'm so excited to spent more time using it. I've been too busy the last couple of days - only taken it out twice - but I think by the end of next week I'll be taking it out every night. In the mean time, I've been watching YouTube videos to figure out how to use it lmao. Loving the challenge thought

PROMPT: What are your favourites of 2020?

Given it is more of a year-end question this can really be anything.
Some categories I thought of were:
- Albums
- Books
- Movies
- TV shows
- Podcasts
- Poetry
- Food
- Games
- Hobbies
- etc, or anything else you liked in 2020 that you wish you could talk about more!

Ironically, it’s been a busy year for me despite the pandemic.

Spoiler
Albums: I usually listen to whatever is on the radio, so it’s usually whatever new pop album is out recently. This year I’ve started listening to more French songs, though I don’t understand French.

Poetry: What a peculiar option to put here. I don’t write so much poetry as I do excerpts and quotes.

Let me answer your prompt by also asking a new one alongside it (as in anyone can answer both because they’ll feed into each other):

PROMPT: What goals are you hoping to achieve in 2021?

The goals can be academic or non-academic (including the areas listed in the previous prompt), and as abstract or as concrete as you like.

For example, in 2021, I’d like to:
Spoiler
- get more exercise
- learn more things at work
- continue to improve the quality of my work (which I did a lot of in 2020)
- read more books
- continue the same self care that I did in 2020 (Recovery was a big thing, as I had a break up and a family member pass away.)
- reconnect with friends in person, taking into account COVID restrictions
- get better at my foreign languages (particularly both dialects of Chinese that I currently know)
- learn Vietnamese
- organise my sleep regime (I’m better than I was in uni, but still need to increase my hours asleep.)
- make it a habit to have less screen time each day where possible
- cook more

Love the prompt  :)

- Bring my WAM up to 80+

- Continue to maintain my health

- find and see Saturn through my telescope

- Work on and perfect my recipes, in particular satay chicken, chicken and sweet corn soup, Pad Thai, lemon chicken and prawn toast. Pretty close with the first three, but they still need some work.

- go outside more, possibly start going on walking trails and the like

In 2021 I'd like to:
-Complete the first year of uni (preferably with a WAM of at least 70, although I don't really know how it works so...)
-Complete at least the second draft of To Kindle A Flame, and hopefully start on first draft of the second book (possibly called something like To Nurture A Spark? although I haven't decided)
-Finally complete and self-publish at least one of my works in progress!
-Improve my drawing skills
-Learn to sing something reasonably well
-Keep up with piano playing
-I'm sure there's a lot of other stuff too!

Stand mixer.

With 10 set speeds from fast to interstellar, 4 mix attachments and the fury of the gods, this baby can whip your cream in 0.5 seconds flat and probably detach a limb if you get too close.

I love it.

My favourite colour is purple and it has been that for as long as I can remember. I think my closest friend back in the day liked purple, so I decided to copy her  :D

But anyway, I feel like purple has a lot of personality, but is also kind of unique? I don't really know how to describe it, but purple has a cool personality.
The funny thing is, if I was to choose any colour to decorate my room with or something like that, I'd always go for a light pink, and rarely ever purple, but for some reason its still my favourite colour XD

What about you, insanipi?

Mine is green! I don't have a real meaning to why but it reminds me of nature, and that's super calming 🥰😂

Red! I love how it has several connotations: anger, passion, love, courage and life. I like to think that I have something positively intense about myself and red just captures that perfectly  ;D
