Which English to choose?

I’ve been trying to decide which English choose for a long time now and I really don’t know which one will be better. I am a very math based student(taking all three maths) and doing a language. I am pretty weak in English so I’m just hoping I’ll get above 25.

I wanna know which English would suit me the most, mainstream or language? And which one would be a bit easier to achieve above 25.

Hello!

I can't say much for eng lang as I did not take it, as my school did not offer it. But I can offer my thoughts as a math-based person who did mainstream English. Being someone who really likes maths, I definitely found English one of my harder subjects. Actually, to be honest, it probably was my hardest subject. It probably took me double the amount of time to achieve the same score in English as for example, spesh. However, in the end, I really enjoyed English and I don't regret not having done Eng Lang. I don't think I would have achieved as well in Eng Lang as mainstream English, (as usually argument analysis was my weaker section)

In the end, I think it's really up to you as to which one you would prefer more. I know people who like maths and science may prefer Eng Lang, however, from what I've heard, it can be a bit tricky, especially when you start (probably gets better though). If you prefer analysis over texts, maybe eng lang would be better for you. If you prefer reading texts, maybe mainstream english.

I heard from a friend doing EngLang that if you are more of a sciency person then EngLang is better than English since you are basically writing scientific-style reports about the language. That said it is totally up to you which English you choose, depending on which suits you better. Good luck!

Also consider that most of the EngLang stuff is likely to be completely new to you, whilst in English, you've probably already done the stuff in previous years.

I've heard and thought about this sentiment a lot, and I'm just not sure what I think about it. I'm definitely a humanities sorta guy, and loved EngLang (sample size of one, obviously, but I think the "if you like science you should do EngLang" thing is a bit overplayed).

That aside, I'd agree with the above and probably stick with English in this particular situation.

Why not also read through the study designs for both subjects and see what appeals to you more? :) Might also be worth having a chat to one of the English teachers and one of the English Language teachers at your school, they could probably offer some good insight as to which subject will fit you better.

Definitely agree with Joseph41, in that Eng Lang may not necessarily be tailored for you if you're a Maths/ sciency person.

Personally, I love English, so I'm doing both this year! English and Eng Lang.
And in Year 11 I found out that both of them helped each in some way or other! For example, English helps me understand the nuances of words in Eng Lang or even some social purposes.
And then Eng Lang helped me with Argument Analysis for English because I could go into the nitty gritties of grammar and understand connotations of words!

I feel like Eng Lang is so much skills based, that's what I like about it! Once your concepts are crystal clear, it's all about application and sticking to that formulaic AC or SA format.
And then you've got texts, poems, etc to study for English - the comparative's the new one, which to me is really exciting!! :)

But definitely like lovelyperson said, you might not be familiar with metalanguage in Eng Lang, whereas you'll have some knowledge from Year 10 English. But having said that, the metalanguage shouldn't be too hard to learn if you practice a lot and you notice things in daily life in conversations!

So mainstream English'll be your best bet! :)
(Sorry if I was all over the place! Just wanted to share my opinions about both Eng Lang and English) :)
