ATAR Score with English

How is the VCE ATAR Scored with the Subject English?

Is English rated higher than all other subjects?

I understand the ATAR Score is the Scaled score of 4 subject then changed by how students went that year.

eg
But is English 40% of ATAR
Math Methods 20%
Physics 20%
Chemistry 20%

Why is it important to get a great score in English to achieve a high ATAR Score at the end of the year.

English is very important as it's part of the top 4.

Your atar is calculated like this, if you do 6 subjects (the maximum amount that contributes to your atar)

  • English
  • Subject 2
  • Subject 3
  • Subject 4
  • Subject 5 - This only contributes 10%
  • Subject 6 - This only contributes 10%

The top four all contribute fully to the atar, and they will be your top scoring subjects, where as you bottom two subject will be the subjects you didn't perform as well in. English is the grand exception to the rule, where it will always count fully to the atar as it will always be in the top 4. It doesn't matter if you score well or poor, it will always be in that spot. English isn't "rated higher" than any other subject, and subjects (using your example) like methods, physics and chem don't contribute a certain percentage.

Lets have some fake scores as an example, and these are all after scailing:

English: 28
Methods: 31
Chemistry: 35
Physics: 34
Art: 36
Revolutions: 32

Your top four are your highest 3 and english, so it would be english 28, chemistry 35, art 36, and physics 34. What's left over are methods and revolutions, these contribute 10%, so Methods 31 becomes 3.1, Revolutions 32 becomes 3.2. These are added up to one score called the aggerated, in this case it's 139.3 (28 + 35 + 36 + 34 + 3.1 + 3.2). That score of 139.3 is used to place you in the state, and your atar is essentially the position in the state, e.g 70 is you beat 70 percent of the state/ you're in the top 30%.

So the reason why english is important, is that you have to do well to make sure it doesn't bring down your aggregate score, as it's in your top 4. It's always going to be in your top four, even if it's your worse score. So, doing well in english means you will get a higher atar as the top four scores always contribute fully. Hope that makes sense, good luck :)

Adding a little to Geoo's post.

Basically, If someone doesn't do well in an English subject it severely limits how high their ATAR can get. There are people who have scored close to 50 in many subjects but a study score of English in the mid-30s would drag their ATAR from something that would be in the high 99s to low 99s/high 98s.
