Title: Psychology Exams
Post by: Eriny on January 06, 2008, 03:01:46 pm
This post is basically just to direct you to some practise exams. Feel free to add more.

VCAA Exams and Assessment Reports
This one should be obvious by now :D. The new study design came in 2005, so any exams before that may have irrelevant material. I'd advise you to do the ones before 2005 as well though, because there are some good questions on there. If you know the study design you should be able to figure out which questions you don't need to answer, but if you're unsure (sometimes the study design is pretty vague...) you can always ask on FSN.

I also have other hard copy exams that have been written on. I can possibly scan those in and then edit the files so that the writing isn't on there. I can also scan in the questions from the Psych Notes books as well as a few other study guides. But I will only do these things if requested.

There may be mistakes in some of the exams, so again, if you're unsure you can always post a discussion about it.

Good idea Eriny. I think I have the 2007 STAV exam which I will post when I get back from holidays. Be extremely wary with STAV exams. They are very often not consistent with the difficulty of the VCAA exams. This can be a good thing, but it can damage confidence if you do not perform as well as you expect to on these considerably more difficult exams.  STAV often try  to word their questions in a similar fashion to the wording of chemistry and biology, which can be a significant grievance to psychology students who are not accustomed to questions which are posed in a fashion which is contrary to the way that VCAA deliver their questions.  Also be careful with TSSM which produce which are ridiculously easy and ask obvious questions.  It is therefore imperative that you take advantage of VCAA papers and don't waste them.  Check out the assessment reports which are found alongside the exams, as VCAA are obsessed with re testing concepts which students have not handled particularly well in the part.  Let these reports be your psych bible.

lol, yeah. TSSM is a confidence boost. Maybe it's a good idea to do one of those after a STAV one :D

And agreed that the assessment reports are pretty much vital if you want to get a good mark. One of the short answers and one of the multiple choice on the 2007 end of year was almost the same as a 2006 questions which many people failed to answer correctly.

I think its prob one of the easier vce exams, because its half multiple choice. Nothing to be scared of!!! What mark do you want/expect for it?

How does having multiple choice make an exam easier? Nothing to be scared of? I would of thought it was quite normal to be anxious about a VCE exam.

multiple choice, atleast for psychology, definitely makes things easier to a degree.  there is no need to carefully word your answers to answer the question correctly and as shown in vcaa exam assessments, is the most easily accessible section of the exam.

the distribution of students mainly occurs throughout the short answer section.

I never said its not normal to be anxious about the exam. I just meant that because it is multiple choice and the exam is not really that hard, if you put in a bit of work, there is nothing to be scared of. I know that I would prefer multiple choise instead of short answers, but obviously everyone doesnt feel the same way.

tssm 2007 is an absolute joke
I wouldnt be to confident with the results of that

none the less 100% is a good effort, try some others ones, official VCAA, NEAP and STAV are the best to have a go at
Title: Re: Psychology Exams
Post by: melaniej on June 05, 2008, 08:02:12 pm
I think the actual exam this year will be significantly harder than those.
Because its the last year of the course, they will test how well schools have taught it and all.
So dont base too much on the TSSM ones, because they are ridiculously easy!
STAV arent great either.
NEAP and VCAA are your best bet

wait, does the study design finish next year?
i hope the exam wont be hard.
do you really think it will be the most difficult? please say no lol

Yes it finishes this year I think or maybe next year (im sure its this year). It will be a bit harder but I dont think that they can make it significantly harder than previous years.

If you know the study design well then you should do good and also look at previous assessment reports and see where students made mistakes in previous years (e.g. where an image is processed in the brain in the last 2 years has got less than 50% correct responses in both years) so it may be tested again.

out of curiosity, if vcaa doesn't award half marks, then how is it possible to achieve 157/180?
Title: Re: Psychology Exams
Post by: Eriny on June 11, 2008, 11:49:14 am
They do award half-marks, or at least, they do before doubling.

actually, im pretty sure two examiners mark your paper, then they add the scores together (no averaging).

atleast thats what my teacher told us, and hes one of the examiners.
Title: Re: Psychology Exams
Post by: Nick on June 11, 2008, 12:05:33 pm
Yes that is correct. Two examiners mark your psych paper and the two scores are added together in order to grant you a total score out of 180.
