Exactly. One of the reasons I'm taking Comp sci(apart from that I like it) is because my BSc(Advanced) is pretty useless by itself. If I wanted to go into research I would 100% need a Phd. I don't know of anyone who would hire me based on the sole fact that of having a degree in Physics..

Plenty of companies as long as you're in the top 2-3% of students :)

I'd hazard even the top 10-20% should be very, very employable straight out of undergrad

Have friends with BSc who've landed 100k+ grad roles at Google, Atlassian, McKinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, probably at a higher success rate than my BCom friends, but I guess it depends on what you define as 'useful'

That’s incredible. any chance you know what major/s they did and approx how high their wams would’ve been?

Another question, how useful would it be (in terms of employment) if I also did a concurrent diploma at UniMelb? Thanks.

Majors are usually irrelevant, WAMs would be 80+ min, mostly 90+
Diplomas are mostly irrelevant

I'm a bit late here, but was this for software engineering? I would have thought you'd definitely need the official Engineers Australia accreditation for Civil, Electrical ect. Thanks for all this insight! :)

Sorry, yes, predominantly software engineering, although iirc there was 1 or 2 who got hired and had the employer pay for their training on the job.

Hi,

-Serious Advice Needed-

I'm a domestic student looking for some advice, just recently started my masters in engineering at Unimelb and have fallen into a state of depression during this period. My years of social isolation and anxiety is finally starting to catch up with me, and I am feeling its effects even after the exams. There were many possible triggers for this such as huge increase in difficulty compared to my bachelors, extremely long periods of social isolation (studying) and sense of worthlessness. I'm terrified of my prospects after graduating, having no experience in my field and having  mediocre grades. I was thinking to switching to RMIT next semester to complete my degree as I heard it was more practical and encourages you to take an internship during the degree. Also, all my friends have either graduated or found jobs related to their field, and this furthers amplifies my sense of worthlessness. I have been to counseling with the uni, and found it was somewhat helpful, but only for a short period of time before these feelings come back. This is not helped by the fact you have to book an appointment weeks in advance to see your regular counselor. I thought that maybe after exams, my anxiety and depression would be relieved, as I will have more time to catch up on my hobbies such as gaming and watching netflix. Sure it was fun, for a few days but i quickly became bored of it, and now just lying in bed pretending to be 'sleepy' when really I have no energy or motivation to do anything. I miss having close friends in high school, but over the years I have slowly began distancing myself from them and now have zero contact with them at all. I like the idea of having close friends, but absolutely terrified of socializing and meeting up. It just seems everyone is much further ahead of me in life, and I have yet to experience any feelings of success, happiness, socializing etc. Sorry if what I'm saying makes little sense, and all over the place but my thoughts are rather muddy and dull. What can I do to change my situation ? I am a loser in real life, and terrified of my future prospects as an 'engineer'.
Hey there, sorry to hear that things have been tough for you.
I'd recommend seeing a GP to discuss your concerns. They can give you a Care Plan that gives you 10 Medicare subsidised psych appointments. GPs are also great as someone to talk to that you can see often. You can either go to the uni medical clinic or find another practice if you don't have a GP already. Finding a good GP and good psych have been the best things I've ever done for my health.

Its a tough slog but I can promise you, things will get better. I think seeking professional advice is the best thing to do, but in the meantime things like:
- exercising (doesn't matter what you do - just something)
- theres a number of apps that help with mindfulness and such
- going to bed and getting up at consistent times
are things that might help.

You're welcome to PM me if you want to if you want to discuss things privately. And know that the whole ATAR Notes community will always support you, too <3

How long did it take for your subjects to show up in Allocate+ after enrolling?

I have a question about graduation. I'm in my final semester and received special consideration to re-sit my exams. One of the marks I am not happy with and want to re-sit the exam. However, I got an email saying that if I take the exam, my graduation will be in April.

Is it possible to graduate earlier than that and still resit the exam? I need to start Master's in March next year.

Hey!

I can't help you with physics, but have you done a language placement test yet? I was having trouble enrolling in Italian 1 just before, but then I saw in the handbook that enrolment necessitates the completion of the test!

Hopefully that helps you!

Should be able to find it there! It'll then redirect you to the test (takes like 20 minutes).

I think you'll be able to enrol in the subject tomorrow, after the test results have been overseen by the faculty. :)

Regarding physics, the unimelb system is dodgy and sometimes they don't register your VCE scores (I remember when I tried enrolling last year it refused to believe me I got above the English score needed to get into the university in the first place).

In this case you'll have to submit an enrolment variation form (go to this link and scroll down to "submit an EV form"), follow the instructions, and you'll need to attach a photo with proof of your physics score (a screenshot of your VCE results with your name included would be fine). It'll take about 1-2 business days then you'll be automatically enrolled.

For anyone who's done BCMB30002, I noticed in the first 4 weeks there is a computer-based tutorial. Is it possible to not attend one of the tutorials, or possibly do the work at home? (Also where does the 5% assessment stem from? Is it all four tutes or just an assessment at the end of the series). Thankyou!!

I have done that now. Its a little frustrating to see how the system is all over the page and requires to login in so many places. I was also very confused with my.unimelb and prod.ss.unimelb.edu.au.... why not have a better user-friendly navigating sitemap.............................

Where can i find a guide for subject enrollment for engineering. i haven't done specialist maths, as it wasn't offered due lack of interest from fellow students. I have found a normal one, but idk how much will my structure differ?

The best "guide" would be this page which lists all the possible majors that relate to engineering. There is also this course planning guide and this list of sample course plans.

As you haven't done Spesh, you'll need to do Calculus 1 in Sem 1 and Calculus 2 in Sem 2. Linear Algebra can be done in Sem 1, Sem 2 or the summer semester.
