Title: From today until November 2 (and beyond)
Post by: paigek3 on September 30, 2017, 02:48:56 pm
Hi guys!

I decided to start my own HSC journey journal now after reading some others and thought what a great way to procrastinate from study ;D I may be a bit late but thought I might as well at least attempt to document my last five weeks of study.

My real name is Ella, middle name Paige. I originally used it as my username thinking I probably would only ask a couple of questions once or twice and then never visit again. I was very wrong  ;D 101 posts later and I'm stiiiiill here!! Im 17, from the Northern Beaches of Sydney and my main passion in life would probably be sport, in particular watching sport, and to go even further in depth, rugby league and cricket are my two favourites to follow. This has inspired me to want to pursue a career in sports journalism in the future. I completed work experience and two seasons of internships for the sydney sixers in the media department so I truly cannot wait to learn more about it all! I also love playing softball and touch footy, only socially now however as life begins to get busier!

My school does the HSC compacted, so I already sat my exams for adv english, gen 2 maths and society and culture, in which I received band 5s in all three. This year I did Extension 1 english, extension 2 english, legal studies and pdhpe, all which i am aiming to get band 6s/e3 or e4s in. I have enjoyed my subjects this year, and enjoying legal studies so much has made me want to pursue law as well at uni and to do a double degree

I sometimes find it hard to get motivated to study but it has been getting easier than the first monday of holidays where I found it extremely hard to get into doing work after many parties and graduation celebrations the week prior.

My atar goal is a 90+, with a 93 being a dream but very hard to get ;D

I havnt come across many people doing compressed curriculum amd it intrigues me, so I have a few questions: What's it like? How do you pick which subjects are studied in which year? Do think it's better to do compressed or the normal system majority of us do?

Hey! Personally, overall I do like doing it the way I do, but there are still a few annoying bits to it. It is VERY fast paced. On a normal day at my school, you usually have doubles for 2 subjects and a single for 1, so if you miss two days of school consecutive that could mean you are missing four hours of work. However, this comes in handy if you end up dropping a subject like I did this year, as I was doing 14 units I dropped business studies after completing the preliminary course. Speaking of that, we do prelim from term 4 week six to term 1 week ten, and then hsc for the full other two terms. However, for extension subjects (which lessons are before and after school), it is completed over two years like normal. Another cool thing is that year 11 and 12 are mixed together in classes which is a great opportunity as i probably would not have become friends with people in the year above or below otherwise

At my school we were lucky and got to choose whatever subjects we wanted to do in each year, and then they made the lines after they saw what we wanted to do. Every single person in my year got to do all the subjects they wanted in the year they wanted. I chose to do english and maths first year to get them out of the way so that this year i have been able to do more self 'elective' subjects which has made it more fun!

Like I said before, I do like it, but I dont really know different. Though, this time last year I thought i needed an 84 to do the course i wanted, but I have changed my mind on what I want to do and now I need a 93! The absolute biggest bonus is having to only study for three subjects when it comes to exam time and for the HSC in particular, and having the experience of already being through the hsc once is also pretty awesome

My school has returned back to normal system for next year's year 11 cohort as they thought with upcoming syllabus changes to subjects, it would be too hard to teach them so fast paced

Ohmygod yeah, I thought that immediately as soon as I read your post because that particular school is known in the area for splitting their HSC between Year 11 and 12 hahaha. I'm from Curl Curl, but I commute a long way to school—which coincidentally is basically the school a suburb down from yours haha!

Over yesterday and today I haven’t done one bit of study which I sort of feel guilty about. Sunday I spent the entire day hosting a grand final party for nearly 30 of our closest family and  friends, and today I just spent the day at the aquarium with my boyfriend. Hopefully back into it tomorrow - heading into school to do a past paper in exam conditions for legal

Just finished the legal paper, I'm having dizzy spells though which I get every month at that time of the month  :-\ which is annoying because it of course altered my quality of writing (yep, I get them sitting down too!!). They always make me feel sick so all I want to do is sleep and not study, but I am trying to push through because I really cannot afford three days in a row. Hoping they go after lunch so I can re-write my essays before handing them in for feedback! Or I might try really get into PD seeing as though that is my first exam... Ahh!

Hey that is so sick all the work experience you have done! I would highly recommend emailing Big League for next season, I did a week's work experience there and it was one of the best weeks of my life! Staff were so helpful and welcoming (there's only around 8 of them) and I got to write pieces for them and got published in one of their weekly magazines! :) Just something it seems like you would love!

I started a thread last night called ‘Next year’s plans’ and it has been a hit, everyone is loving it which is so awesome!!!!! Click on here if you wanna join in https://atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?topic=173933.0 Still yet to find someone wanting to do what I do which sucks, but bright side is less 99.95 ATARS to compete with to get in  ;D

Forgot to ask why you're looking at law and journalism combined? :)

Well, journalism (in particular sports journalism) is a field I have wanted to pursue since I was 12 years old so that has always been there, and then ever since doing legal studies it kind of hit me only about a month ago how much I enjoy it and I thought why not get a double degree just incase in 5 years time I do end up wanting to pursue law. Just something handy to have I reckon :)

Has not been a great week study wise for a variety of personal reasons, but I am hoping that will change today, although the cramps are getting to me baaaaaad. Gosh, all I have come on here and done is rant  ;D I promise I will start talking about a few more positive things from now on too!!! I made my website for my online tutoring, something I have been wanting to do since last year! But I am struggling with how to best advertise it, if anyone has any tips feel free to leave them below :P or if you have a friend in year 11 about to begin year 12, or that is you yourself, PM me so I can tell you more if you are interested!

Today my goals are to write flashcards for my PDHPE options, plan an extension 1 English creative and get an extension 1 English essay done. How much have you guys been doing per day, and what have you been doing in that day? I feel like this is too little but it's better than what I have done this week haha. Next week is going to be the week I crack into past papers all day eeeerrryyy day (I hope lol)

Ooh, that seems exciting. What subjects are you offering to tutor? I've also considered being a tutor after the HSC, ahaha.

Study wise, I've been working on Paper 1 and 2 a lot lately. I've also been honing in on my analysis for Module A. Planning to get Module B and C done by the end of the week.

I've also done Biology and 3u practice papers this week, so it's been pretty productive. :)

The more you make helpful posts, the better the endorsement! :D

Offering tutoring for Standard, Advanced, Ext 1 and Ext 2 English, General 1 and 2 Maths, Legal Studies, Society and Culture and PDHPE :)

That is awesome you have had a productive week, you should be proud of yourself! I did English last year (bc compacted curriculum) so I am lucky my first exam isn't until two weeks today!

Very good point  ;) Making posts/answering questions actually have been so helpful for myself! I have been answering quite a few on the PDHPE forums because it is my most strongest subject of all and it has really helped me revise myself and gain a greater depth of knowledge when figuring out how exactly I can explain something to someone else!

I've been trying to do the same thing but on the biology forum! Even though my strongest subject is actually geography, there's not many people active on that board at the moment (I'm hoping to change that slowly though) so I I've turned to bio instead, which I am still good at, and am finding it so beneficial.

Just been continuing to write an essay for ext 1 which I have severely over written, so will be posting in the ext 1 forums soon for feedback on what to take out and just for feedback in general!

My goals for this week (oct 8-oct 14) are:
- complete sports med flash cards and consolidate all PDHPE notes from mon-tues
- a PDHPE past paper a day from wed-friday
- finish my extension 1 essay
- do some legal short answer
- do a family essay for legal

Feelin a bit sad bc my boyfriend left this morning and we live about 40 min from eachother so we only hang out on weekends (until i start uni of course and my schedule becomes a bit more flexible!) but even less cause of the nature of right now being exam season - stupid uni exams and HSC!!!

Once I complete my ext essay I will have done everything I wanted to achieve today yaaaaayy! That's amazing because I write articles for my local (semi)professional cricket team and I totally forgot I had an article due today at 5pm until about lunch time!! But that is complete so it is back to extension.
As much as my teacher has made me hate the subject I do weirdly enjoy writing essays for it...once I have my head wrapped around what I want to say lol! I need to plan in extension for my writing to be any good so I keep debating on whether I should take two mins at the start to plan, but I am worried I would run out of time ahhhh. Although, in trials I had 5 mins extra (after writing 14 pgs combined from essay and creative) so maybe I can afford it?

Match previews! Although they always turn into a half match report because I usually look back on the week prior to sort of predict what needs to happen this week :P

Had a fairly productive day today! Completed the 2011 PDHPE practice paper except for a couple harder questions which I am typing up to send my teachers for feedback. Then I went to the gym and did a really good work out which was awesomeeeee. Then came home and did my essay for the Big History project for my 3 bonus points for Macquarie 8) 8) and now just trying to finish off a few more PD questions. Hoping to do 2012 tomorrow and finish my ext essay that I keep planning to do and end up doing something else lol! And edit one of my legal essays! How's everyone feeling thus far?

Going to the gym is honestly the best way to take a break from study! It's a pity because mine is around 20-30 minutes away from my place but still always a great way to keep healthy and motivated :)

Ahhh so glad I did it because now it has given me motivation that I actually can do it! So keen to see my boyfriend tomorrow just to relax a bit, we gonna get some good food yay! But the studying won't completely leave because he's gonna help me with a few aspects of the sports medicine option for PD seeing as though he did his HSC last year wooooo

Doubt many will read this prior to tomorrow at around midday because of all the cramming currently going on! Had a really good day today, gonna FaceTime my boyfriend Wednesday night for some last minute revision before my exam & a little support too!

Feeling so grateful I’m not doing English tomorrow (compacted curriculum pros!!!!) although, little 16 year old me this time last year was in the same boat that a lot of you are in now. Wish I had discovered ATAR notes last year! I may have actually because I remember the discussion post-exam, but I was no more than a Guest. Thinking of heading over to the marking and feedback forums to assist in some feedback for some writings because I can see it is quite chaotic right now!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE FOR ENGLISH TOMORROW!!! I’m sure the essay questions won’t be as hard as you all are terrified for because usually paper 1 is fairly broad as it has to accomodate aaaaall the texts. Paper 2 on the other hand...no comment ;D

GOOD LUCK AGAIN AND I BELIEVE IN YOU ALL <3 keen to hear the question and how it all went!

Finally, it is my turn to begin the HSC exams for 2017 and my oh my am I nervous.

You’d think after the experience from last year I’d be fine but my heart is beating quite fast right now and I’m starting to boil up - can’t even remember if I was like this last year!

I don’t even know why I am as nervous as I am, PD is probably my best subject of all, from this year and last. Maybe it’s just first exam (of the block) nerves.

REALLY hoping I do not wake up feeling like this ;D

My goodness I am knackered! So glad to have the exam over and done with, think I did really well in extended response, pretty well in short answer and meh in multiple choice looolll!!! Thinking tomorrow I might take it easy a bit seeing as though I have a week between exams and just focus on beginning and completing an ext 1 creative

Had my first touch footy game of the season today and lost by 1, but not too bad as it’s our first year in the senior comp and I think we are the youngest team by far haha!!

Actually, the day and two days following my last exam are pretty hectic, hence why I just want them to be here now  ;D

Thursday
- Lunch with friends straight after our last exam
- Touch footy game that evening

Got Extension 1 English tomorrow ahhhhh!! Even though I’m prepared with my creative and quotes (not for the crazy questions tho haaaa!), I’m still freaking out right now ;D I am such an anxious person that just the wait to do an exam is torture but once I’m in there after about 15 mins my hand stopped sweating and I am able to block everything out :P Pls pray for me that the ATB essay is about power and the creative is about hope/freedom, but I know they won’t be because Ext questions are craaaaaaaaazzzzyyy

My goooodness legal is overwhelming. It is so important to me that I do well in this subject that it puts the pressure even higher to remember everything. I think my game plan for today will be to do essay plans with LCMIDs for my options topics with the questions that have not been asked in a few years, whilst trying to overlap these paragraphs with other topics so I can use them for a whole variety of questions. Then going to do the same with crime, and then some human rights flash cards. Then want to really go over crime so I can ensure that I stop making silly mistakes in multiple choice. And finally, will find some LCMID for topics like young offenders and international crime, and other topics from areas that people doubt will be used JUST incase, because I heard business studies repeated a similar question from 2016 into 2017's paper

Physically writing out my plan onto here helps me stay on track, so enjoy reading my pointless study plan description for today ;D

Ok so, multiple choice has never been my strength because I doubt myself when doing it. Yesterday I got as low as 14/20 which is awful for me because when I got full marks for human rights and near full marks for everything else in my exams throughout the year, it drags me down sooo much. BUT, today I did two when I woke up and got 19/20 in the first and 18/20 in the second, and then just then I did the 2016 paper and got 20/20 yaaaay!!! So happy to find this confidence before tomorrow

Now to continue remembering all of my LCMID ;D

This will almost definitely be updated tonight when it hits about 8pm and I start freaaakin hahahahah!

Almost forgot to update this because I’m weirdly not feeling nervous. Usually the night before an exam I heat up, and can only breathe shallowly but I haven’t really felt that like I did for my other exams and I honestly don’t know why? It’s not even like I feel super confident either, I’ve done bundles of study and memorisation of LCMIDs so if I don’t mind blank I am prepared, but I wouldn’t say confident at all cause I’m not sure what the questions will be! :P

Thought I’d be the most nervous for this cause the result of this exam means the most to meeee

Forgot to also add that I have a few job interviews this week for some part time media/marketing assistant jobs. I am soooo nervous for them as I have only ever done internships and never done a proper paying job because ya know dont need to really interview someone who is working for you for free hahaha

So tomorrow is the day!!! (And Friday too but yeah!) As im so lucky to be in the position that I’ve already enrolled and everything into my first preference, I’m in a totally different mindset than what I imagined I would be - not realising how blessed I would be! But I’m quite excited to get them, it is what we have been working towards for the last year and more, and I still really want to get good marks because I worked so hard for them

Alsoooo as of this time last week, I’m 18 now yayayay!! So much easier to apply for jobs cause I don’t sound as young hahah

Good luck everyone, can’t wait to see everyone’s results!!! <3

School is officially and completely over and it’s so weird! So much excitement leading up to finding out the results and it was over in a matter of seconds. Honestly, a part of me wants to go back and do it all again and study all day errrryyy day putting in even more effort than I did and get an even more incredible ATAR. Part of me also regrets not moving schools to have the facilities to get a better ATAR than I did. But, I’m in university and that is the main thing, and that leads to another part of me just wanting to go to Officeworks and buy my uni supplies already hahahaha

In year 11 my ATAR goal was an 84. I begun year 12 and my marks continuously got better so that aim eventually went up to a 90, and even a 93 at one stage. I honestly thought I could achieve it, but I really was kidding myself after the year I had with Extension. To explain it as quickly as I can - my class had no teacher for six weeks due to mine going overseas and having no sub to replace him...yep.... We also had an entire month off Extension 1 as our Extension 2 projects were behind during this time because my teacher didn’t reply to any emails whilst he was away... ANYWAYS I should stop being salty about that now hahahaha. Ultimately, this quality of teaching resulting in a disappointing outcome for all three of us in our class where we all got E2s in Extension 2 English - keep in mind the three of us scored band 6s and 5s in every other subject including advanced English sooooo...yep...

My results were:

PDHPE: 93
Legal Studies: 92
Society and Culture: 86
Advanced English: 81
Extension 1 English: 38/50
Extension 2 English: 31/50
General 2 Maths: 81

I was over the moon with my first two up there. Advanced English, Society and Culture and General 2 Maths I all did last year as a 16 year old and at the time I was honestly over the moon but now I really think if my school did the HSC the normal way I could’ve improved so much because my writing had matured immensly.

So after getting this, my ATAR calculators ranged between 86 and 89 (with a +/- of 1) hence I was holding on to that dream of a 90. But, unfortunately I did not get that. I ended up with an 86.85 which whilst at first I was like damn so close, I’m pretty proud of now.

I’m so happy I made it onto the distinguished achievers list for two of my subjects!

And whilst I didn’t achieve my goal, the main thing is that I am in uni and I’m really excited to start this new chapter

Thanks to everyone who helped me on ATAR notes this year, I can’t thank you all enough! I’m not sure if I’ll be around here too often as I start a job and uni of course but I hope I do find the time to drop by.

Let me know if anyone else is going to Macquarieeeeee!!!!

Got the most awesome job!!! Can’t believe they chose me I’m stoked! I’m now a Marketing Co-Ordinator for a marketing company working 8-5 twice a week and 8-12 once a week so basically 2.5 days!

The company helps small businesses run their social media accounts so it’s my job to assist in running these, come up with strategies on how to get a bigger audience and assist with PR events and all that sort of thing! Honestly right up my alley and a perfect addition to my Media degree!

That's awesome for our age! Is this a stay at home job, or is there an office that you travel to?

It's just FANTASTIC Ella! I'm so so pleased to hear this. Not only is it fantastic because it's right up your alley and it's going to be paying some bills, but it's already a step into a career and not many people get that so early on!
