How to integrate evidence from sources into answers.

Hey guys, for my upcoming first Y12 assessment for modern history, we are required to 'integrate evidence derived from sources provided in the task with their own knowledge of content'. Just wondering how exactly to integrate these sources. Do we use quotes, or summarise generally what the source is talking about? How much of our answer should be comprised of source quotation? Are we meant to also analyse the source in our answer?

Also, we have 45 minutes to answer 3-4 questions. How long should each answer and how many paragraphs in each? Or would they just be relatively short 1 paragraph answers?

Thanks so much.

Hey there,

There are many ways you can integrate sources into your response.

The most common way is to directly quote the source. Let's say you're given an extract of Joseph Goebbels' speech in regards to propaganda (let's use this as an example) and you get a question on how the source reflects the importance of propaganda. One way you could integrate a quote in your response is:

Quote
Propaganda played a significant role in the spread of Nazi ideology due to the simplistic nature of the message. This idea is supported by Source A as propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels describes the sole purpose of Nazi propaganda as a way to ensure the people "have capitulated to us (and) grasp ideologically that what is happening in Germany today not only must be accepted but also can be accepted."

You can also paraphrase quotes as long as you explicitly refer back to the source. Using my previous example, you could say something like:

Quote
Propaganda played a significant role in the spread of Nazi ideology due to the simplistic nature of the message. This idea is supported by Source A as propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels emphasised the sole purpose of Nazi propaganda as a way to indoctrinate the masses.

If you get propaganda posters and you want to talk about its visual aspect, it's best to describe it. If we're using anti-semitic propaganda posters as an example, you could describe how these posters propagate Jewish stereotypes (e.g. rich, being money-hungry, etc.).

Hope this helps!
