Title: Post Selective School Exam Discussion
Post by: The Progenitor on June 15, 2019, 05:59:06 pm
Now that the exams are finally over, how did everyone go?

Definitely harder than I thought, personally felt like I did pretty good in writing and reading comprehension, but needed to guess like 10-15 questions in the other modules. Overall, pretty trash tho lol

numerical and verbal: eh
Maths: kinda dies on the last 10 questions everything else was alright first 20 questions were easy took like 5 minutes to do them
Reading comprehension: v good it was easy
Writing: actually think I done well but I couldve added a bit more description

Some girl near me finished all the maths like 5 minutes before the time and got up to the bathroom, honestly how? Like tf?
Another person near me didnt even write in paragraphs for writing so that's kida what boosted my confidence during the exam
Also did anyone get the last question with the volume and parabolas and that stuff

i did horrible, oof i knew i failed and the thing was i wasn’t even stressed or anything, the time limit and the difficulty of the tests was just too much for me. it was so much harder than i expected the practice tests liED TO ME

readinf comp: good
verbal: not too good
numerical: very not good
maths: i shat myself when i saw the word ‘parabola’
writing: the prompt wasn’t nice but was probably my best after reading  :-\

Really? What about the rest of the maths questions. How many questions did u do when the time finished. I did 50, and did 5 educated guesses, then guessed the other 5

Why are we basically the same lol, if I get into selective at this point it's all luck. This is literally me and everyone had atleast one area they got like 90% in or smth and then I'm just like uh I done alright at reading

Me in the test:

Verbal:dizzy (average or high average) - guessed a lot
Numerical:good (above average or superior) - guessed the 10 hard ones and the rest was alright
Writing: Crap it’s creative (Low average or average) - just did crap
Reading: Not that bad but everyone talk about how easy it is (high average or above average?) - guessed like 10 but unsure if I got other ones right
Math: screwed that one. I died along the way(probably an average??? Not that possible for a high average) - definitely failed this one since I guessed like 30 questions “c”

Lol I knew I’m too dumb for this even though I studied like really hard for the last 3 month; I was remembering like 60 words a day and worked on this exam for 6 hours a day(for the last month); but there were still tones of words I haven’t seen before in verbal...

And for math, I did like the whole book of year nine and ten questions but all the questions on the test was harder so I just screwed

Lol I felt dumb after today’s test and I shouldn’t put that much effort in tho

Do I still have a chance for getting into nossal with these scores? Be honest please it wouldn’t offend me

The maths was insanely hard, I thought maths was my strongest subject, having worked on it alot more than english but I still had to guess many questions. Honestly I think its stupid that they had cubic questions on the maths, that stuff is year 10-11.

i also did the test today my desk number was 2295 for those wondering.
I think i did well in Math (think got 40). I think i did well in comp.
Okay in writing.
Verbal pretty good.
And numerical was the only one i was kind of scared about, as i guessed many
Do i have a chance of getting into Nossal, like others have said please be honest. :)

in the end, it depends on how everyone else did. i reckon with what you're saying about how you did for the exams, you could probably get into Nossal. i wish you luck >_<

okok i stuffed up literally everything
verbal- did like the first 20 then went to guessing
numerical- same with verbal
writing- finished this one in 10 mins ( i prayed for creative)
reading- finished exactly in time, surprisingly pretty easy
math- no joke did 10 questions and then went to guessing (i had given up at this point)
so i think i got 3 low averages and 2 highs or aboves
not jinxing anything but probably flunked it

So relieved to read that Maths was hard for everyone, I thought I stuffed it up, having prepared so hard for Maths, had to guess like 20 questions, what are we meant to know at this level, I mean we are grade 8 students for God Sake !!

Fingers crossed !!

The answers for the tests will change every year of course, so if you're lucky most of the answers will be B. There's no way of knowing whether guessing B or C is better, but B and C are normally the 2 best options to go for so don't stress  :)

hahahaha mhs yr 10 exam was sooooooo easyyyyy. we had creative as well which was a big Rip i was hoping for analytical. i remember doing the exam last year was so fkin hard the math was like kms the last 20 questions had functions and relations which i only learnt for this test and u do that stuff in VCE :/

Hope you guys do well and if you don’t make it in there’s always year 10 exam

one more thing. if you aren’t feeling confident that you’ll make it in be sure to start preparing for next year if you really want to make it in. I suggest participating in A LOT of co curricular stuff so it looks good on your application. and also try really hard in one particular thing and try making state because then you’ll make it in ez

woah i can't believe the exam is over already !! tbh i was not nervous for some weird reason like i was literally prepared to fail lol

verbal: i think i did alright but i got pissed because there was no live timer so whenever the lady (she seemed done especially during break lmao) called out 5 minutes i would rush and guess the rest. im pretty sure i circled all c but otherwise... hopefully not an average but possibly.

numerical: oKAY so i don't know if you guys saw but a guy literally pissed himself and i wasted like 20 seconds wondering what we was doing because he was calling for a teacher until...yeah that was great. numerical was ehh think i did terrible but time is literally an ass:

writing: oh my god it was creative. the prompt was interesting to say the least and i had come up with such a good storyline but never got to do it oopsie.

BREAK: the toilet line was so long omg

reading comp: easiest of them all in my opinion. didnt guess any and finished with like 4 minutes to spare so im quite happy.

mathematics: this hated me and i hated it. wtf was on the test?? i guessed like more than 3/4 of the test which is shiet but yeeeee. im honestly surprised that there was no Pythagorus' theorem? i studied so much on that but there was n0thing.

They come out August 8, but dont be disheartened if you dont get accepted first round bc they usually just pick people with like 3 or 4 superiors and over

Could’ve done like wayyyy better for verbal reasoning but I decided to actually attempt some of the harder questions instead of skipping. I stuffed up.
Which tests do you guys think were the easiest, and which would you say were the hardest?

Your scores for each test is based on how your cohort performs, right? So even if you perform horribly, but everyone else does worse, then you could still get a superior I think. Not sure about that.

ikr. ok those people who claimed that the tests were easy, were probably trying to cover up or act confident to avoid getting nervous or something because i know for a fact numerical can not be described as ‘easy’, unless you’re terribly smart to the point you can even comprehend those last 10 questions in maths

For some reason I found numerical easier than reading I think it’s because I was doing terrible time wise in reading and ended up guessing like 2 questions
still gonna fail in both tho  ;)

One of those tv stand things were right in front of me and I was so releived cause I thought they were gonna put the time on it. BUT THEY DIDNT AND I WAS SO PISSED! NOT EVEN A CLOCK OR ANYTHING SMH. Moreover, everytime the lady would say "15 minutes or 5 minutes" I would always jerk cause it would be dead silent. Also, it was so annoying how when one person coughs, another does and it goes like a chain.
Overall though Maths and Verbal were super hard for me :(
Reading was the easiest
Numerical was okay not too hard or too easy
Writing was shit. I really wanted it to be analytical. Although I felt my storyline was pretty good, I realised afterwards that I didnt have a problem. But it was quite an emotional story so I hope that would be enough ehhh.
tbh I think I did alright. I was so nervous. Now that the exam is over, idk what to do w my life now. What tf do i do w my free time now lmao????

I’m probably gonna get like 12

I thought the start was easy but just time consuming. I could only get through like 45 questions but i think i got like 40 of them right tho. Then i guessed all c's for the rest of the questions. Many have said the end questions were hard as.

Hey guys I am trying out for Nossal next year, i am new to AN. From what i've read maths was probably the hardest.

Can u give me some topics that came up in the maths test?

And how was verbal reasoning? (Im soooo bad at this)

thx

Hey fellow pursuers of greater knowledge(euphemism for nerd),

This is going to seem needy, but I really need somewhere to put out my frustrations. I’m usually smart at school and ace the tests.

And then the real thing. I really don’t know what happened, it wasn’t my day. I went from getting 47 right on my Henderson’s practice test to only answering 48 on the real one(managed to shade in the rest). Other than the English ones, I absolutely bombed out and I’m really dejected. I guessed 10 qs for all the papers other than Reading(which everyone finished) and the narrative(obviously).

What’s got me even more worried is that during the Verbal reasoning test, I had to guess a few at the end and went less than 3 secs over. The supervising teacher came and blasted at me and said “that will be noted.” Does anyone know what in the world she means by ‘noted’. I really feel like they’re actually going to disqualify me or at least take my Verbal Reasoning out of contention(which is a shame because I feel I did well on what I did answer.)

Once again, if you managed to read that entire thing, good on you and thanks for caring. For everyone who did the test, I wish you guys the very best and I hope you get in(considering it’s almost certain I won’t).

Honestly, the maths wasn't the hardest imo. I think numerical reasoning was the clear winner in difficulty, but that could be because maths is my strongest subject. Verbal reasoning from my experience wasn't that hard, but definitely had many hard words, nothing unexpected there.

Maths had quite a lot of quadratics, especially graphing them and vertex form equations, weirdly they had some cubics in there (x^3) and some 'harder' trigonometry (more than just finding the equation). On the whole, just year 9 content with some year 10 content will cover you for maths.

If you want my opinion, I'd say it is probably more important to focus on english than maths. Apparently from what I've heard, MHS principal has been in favor of including way more cultural diversity into MHS, which probably means they will be increasing the difficulty of english and decreasing it in maths. You probably shouldn't take my word for truth, but keep it at the back of your head and also, english is definitely a lot more importance beyond the MHS exam (VCE and the future)

Just some life advice. Please face your reality and don't dwell on your past achievements or end up being a d**ck or c**ckhead. Ignorance gets you to nowhere and the only end-product you will get is karma. Those who may seem less "bright" than yourself may grow into "smart" people. So even if you don't get into a selective school, make yourself a name. I'm guessing your 13? If so, make the most of the next 3 years to get your head on track.

Yeah, that’s plausible. I believe that the test was much harder than the previous years, since it had cubics and parabolas. I’m trying out for Macrob as well. I really hope you get in :)

hi guys,

i did the selective schools test yesterday and here's how i think i did

verbal: alright, but i guessed quite a few
numerical: same as verbal but guessed a bit more
writing: a decent piece; i only wrote a page and a bit, had figurative language tho
reading: probably the only one i did well on; finished this with like 2 mins to go, found it quite easy
maths: i guessed SO many; probably failed it

so could someone please tell me if i have a chance of making it in? pls be honest :)

ps. i'm going for macrob , anyone else?

thanks a lot :))

Tbh, Numerical wasn’t that hard, possibly the easiest of the tests(imo). Reading comp was easy but I can’t comprehend for shit so I did trash. Maths was pretty hard and I legit shat myself staring at that last question. Verbal was the ok one, and the essay is kinda a hit or a miss, wish it was analytical.

here’s my situation now
i honestly feel like i flunked the test especially math, i just looked at the answers and randomly guessed. I did the first half for numerical and verbal but guessed the rest completely. For writing i did decent but didn’t really have a problem ( but if 3 quick lines of realising he trespassed is a problem then ok)
i did pretty good for reading. I honestly am so crushed seeing as though all my friends did pretty well. :’(

They each have an area of academics that they are particularly good at. One of them finished and completely finished verbal with no guesses at all, she said writing and reading was easy (but i did too?)
another friend of mine said math and numerical were really easy and the english tests were hard. Im somewhere in the middle :(

Hey ppl,

I went like 3 seconds over time(my bad) on Verbal and this teacher came up to me and was very cross. She said I “will be noted.” Anyone have any idea if that actually means something?

Also does someone know how the second round offers work? Is the second round basically the Principal’s Discretion)?

That’s a f in the chat I’d be terrified if a teacher told me that
I think second round offers are just offers you get if there’s an open spot because a student rejected it or didn’t respond in time and principals discretion is a whole another thing but don’t quote me on that

yeah ok so basically first round is just smartest people
Second round is if they rejected it or they didnt accept in time, also I heard if you dont go to the open day thing they have then your position gets like taken away so ppl can have their offer dropped if they dont show up and that also opens up spots
Third round is basically more offers plus principles discretion where you need to write a letter and then you are a potential candidate for an interview with the principal

I was freaking out yesterday! Verbal was the first paper and it shook me for the rest of the day. I’m petrified that something’s going to happen because of it. tbh, idk what the education department people will say. in a way, if you email them and it turns out that the supervisors never "noted" it in the first place and it actually has a concequence then youre stuck. but, i mean, i don't think shading bubbles over time is gonna result in your exams not being marked or getting marks deducted.

I hope you’re right. In fact, I’m literally betting my stakes of getting into a selective school that you’re right. You also have a point about me actually telling them about the incident and them not having done anything about it. I don’t want to be stuck in that dilemma so I might just wait for now(agonisingly).

ok so i know im not one to be posting on this thread but like:

1. damn they put cubics in the math exam yall really unlucky
2. there are sometimes incredibly late offers (one of my friends got sent one in november and another in early december)
3. i dont remember there even being a clock. maybe there was and i didnt even notice hahahah. you should however try to use your time wisely once you hear "5 minutes left". look at the questions you have skipped and think "can i solve this in 30 seconds at most?" if not, mark it as C (you can do B if you wanna be different)(this is the next time for an exam, doesnt matter if it's for shs or not)
4. apparently they completely changed the format of numerical and verbal after speaking to some people who were preparing for 1-2 years. if you did horribly on it (or you think you did but you end up with 6 superiors) youre not alone
5. plEASE PLEASE PLEASE for those who went over the time limit dont do it ever again. youre not supposed to be able to finish the test!! even tho some people might have, just guess the rest with those time warnings. peoples tests dont get thrown into the bin but that whole entire test isnt even marked at all. i know this is a horrible thing and its not making anyone feel better but please dont go over the time limit (tHIS IS THE CASE FOR 99% OF THE EXAMS IF NOT 100%)

im sorry if i sound even a little bit rude. these were just some things i wanted to say. hopefully yall really do get in to the schools you want <3

omg at first i thought number 5 meant that if we didn’t finish the test it would thrown in the bin or not get marked at all and spent 5 minutes silently having a mental breakdown before i connected my last two braincells together and read it again shsjsks

Guys, not to sound cocky or anything, but HOW DID U FIND THE MATHS HARD?!?! I did like 45 for maths and guessed the rest. It WASNT EVEN YEAR 10 MATHS (except for the last questions). I thought numerical was hard af. I literally did 25 questions on numerical, then spammed B’s. For verbal I did around 35 questions and guessed. But I did rlly good on writing and though I finished reading, I probably got a above average

IKR? NUMERICAL WAS SOOO HARD. IT WAS WORSE THAN MATHS AND MATHS WAS NOT FUN OR FRESH

wtf are u guys talking about, there were like 30 Numerical pattern questions which were like 13 minutes, and 15 other big af questions with 17 minutes in hand. The other 5 could be guessed, whereas, maths wasn’t that hard either but WTF WAS THAT LAST QUESTION?? Verbal was hardish, I don’t even wanna talk about reading comp as I hate that and I WISH IT WAS ANALYTICAL, NOT CREATIVE

Do they actually not mark my entire Verbal test? Does that mean they give me an average for it or is it just not counted? If it’s not counted, then how do the schools choose or compare? I’m genuinely losing it right now!

It may not be counted, that brings your score down. I’ve heard that to get in you have to achieve a certain score on every test/ they add up all your marks and that’s how they get the students. I honestly don’t know though. I’m freaking out as well. It’s been like 3 days but I still feel like I’m in the exam/going to do it. I think you’ll be okay though.

omg theres so many theories on how they mark it. we’ll probably never know for sure

Calm down everyone. Different people do differently. If someone found a test you did good at hard, that’s natural. It’s ok to tell everyone how you went and stuff but please just stop forcing your opinions on people. It’s super annoying.  :)

hey i know this might be a bit late, but good job to u guys for completing the test and i hope all of u make it into your desired schools ! when i sat the test last yr, math was definitely the hardest subject for most ppl and i personally think u shouldn’t worry too much about the test now. keep in mind tho, since basically everyone found math to be quite challenging, the ‘superior’ mark would be lower as ur results r all based off one another (this works the other way around as well :o).

Wait, WHAT?  ??? :-\ :'(

CurryCid18, I just had a similar occurrence today and thought you might want to hear my opinion on this. I had a religion exam today, which is a pretty big deal, it's very strict on rules and stuff. When I was done with the test there was 20 or so minutes to spare and I whispered to a mate behind and the teacher saw and reported me. I was pretty anxious and nervous for the entire day, in anticipation of what was going to happen. But at the end of the day me and the few others that 'cheated' got called to the year 8 coordinator and pretty much just got a warning.

I know that the MHS exam is completely different to this, way stricter and important. But I think from these experiences we can learn to just take it easy, there is no point worrying about something you can't change. At the end, whether or not you get penalized/ let off just learn from your mistakes.

I think you’re right. Maybe I’m overreacting, but the Selective school test means so much to me and I put so much effort. I can’t help but think that I might have not got in just because of that incident. Guess I just sit back and wait now for the next month and a half. Btw, hope you did well on your religion exam.

Hi Progenitor,

I only have to say ‘ cheat’ in ‘religion exam’ sounds like oxymoron. LOL.

I wish no one cheats any exam !! So that it’s fair for all.

Im sure Progenitor you were not doing anything silly but just had a chat since you finished you exam already by then, so good on you 👍🏼

Good luck to all here.

the rankings are not based on marks as far as I’m aware, it’s based on how well other people do so the superior might as well be like 60% for a test if lots of people found it super hard

hi guys,

i did the selective schools test yesterday and here's how i think i did

verbal: alright, but i guessed quite a few
numerical: same as verbal but guessed a bit more
writing: a decent piece; i only wrote a page and a bit, had figurative language tho
reading: probably the only one i did well on; finished this with like 2 mins to go, found it quite easy
maths: i guessed SO many; probably failed it

so could someone please tell me if i have a chance of making it in? pls be honest :)

ps. i'm going for macrob , anyone else?

thanks a lot :))

Judging by your description, I would say you have very high chance of making macrob.

What are my chances to get into schs if this is how I think I went for the following tests.
Verbal: I think I did alright, guessed most of the vocabualry based questions and last 15 due to time
Numerical: Once again, not too bad imo. Guessed approx 10-15.
Writing: I wrote a decent piece. I didn't have a problem but it was an emotional story and I used varied vocabulary.
Reading Comp: The easiest of them all!! I finished with 5 minutes left.
Maths: Oh boy, don't get me started. It was so tough but I managed to do most. Guessed probably 15-20.

I am aware that the superior marks and all that depends on how well everyone did on that day. However, I am curious on what my chances are to get in based on how I foundth the tests. I also go to a grammar school.
Good Luck to everyone!!!

ok final question, if y’all are still here. I needed some clearing up on the offers and results. If you get don’t get an offer do you get sent a rejection letter on the day? and if anyone knows, if you get a second round offer or later will you still get a rejection letter on the day or will you just have to wait for the offer? Does that make sense? (sry bad wording im sick)

I heard they say ''sorry but your child was unsuccessful at obtaining a place at a selective school'' or something, it's not a ''rejection'' letter exactly but more of thing to tell you about how you went. You can still get second round or late offers after this, but you have to wait. Also, they can't tell you that you will get a late offer if that makes sense. So basically if you don't get in the first round you get a letter saying you didn't get in, but you can still get late offers and stuff. Hope this made sense aha.  (also, I don't actually know if all this is right but that's just what it says on the website and stuff)
Sorry for the late reply and good luck + happy holidays!

Theres always year 10 entry if you dont get in!

The year 10 entry exam was so much easier. You should be able to finish all the questions for every test.

Lol idek why these tests are so hard. Guessing 15 to 20 questions shows how difficult these exams are. But it only matters how everyone else does so even if you feel you did bad dw.

Good luck.

Numerical was easy. It was designed to be able to be completed in the time frame. For Verbal it depends on your luck whether you have encountered a certain word before. But for the exam there were not too many definition questions as opposed to last year. I think if you get good grades at school for math, and decent scores for english you should be fine. I recommend not to focus too much on the reasoning tests and the math. Just focus on your writing because that essentially separates you from everyone else as not too many people have good writing skills.

if so, i suggest doing a lot of practice tests and expanding your vocab. imo i think reading and verbal were really easy this year so it shouldn’t be much of a struggle if you got your vocab and time management down.

Top 11% or (10% I am not too sure) of competitors is a superior. From what I have seen in the past years, try to only guess 10 or 12 questions for all the subjects. (Once again this is only a presumption - so give or take a few). I am not entirely sure for the writing either (you may want to ask a tutor or someone on AN).

Now im kinda regretting my decisions for not taking it as seriously as I should have and kinda thinking I'm not rlly gonna get in rn
Has it been like this for anyone else?

lol mate that's exactly what I am thinking about right now. I did the year 10 JMSS test, and have been cursing myself since the exam day for not trying harder on the exam. Dw, there is nothing really that can be done at this point. I just remind myself that it is not the school that determines VCE, it is the individual. If you rlly want to get into that selective school of your preference, remember that for you there is always a second chance next year.

Edit: P.S. just don't stress too much about it, think of it as a passing cloud. I'm sure you would've done fine.

HI!
(yes i’m sorry, it’s me again)
i have one final question before the offers in a few weeks ( i know and i’m sorry )
Does anyone remember; how many worded problems there were for VR and NR? < being anxious really doesn’t help at all and i’m already trying to predict my scores in any way possible.
Thank you in advance <3

Bro i dont know if u wanna hear this but numerical had more reading to it than reasing comprehension. Verbal had a lot of worded problems too. I found verbal and mumerical to be the teo hardest components of yhe exam. Now pleaae be honest, how many questions did u do in verbal and numerical because im trying to find out how others did to predict what i got in then. I did 37 in verbal and guessed and literally 15 in numerical, but i did very well on the other modules.

Bruh, let me be honest with you, from the sounds of it, and considering how well you said you did earlier in maths - you're gonna get in, don't stress. No joke, I don't think I even stand a chance anymore. But for verbal I did all of them, only guessed maximum 5. And then there was numerical, literally guessed 20 or more, but idk I feel like I've already forgotten how many i did or not. it was something like that. Good job on doing so well, really hope it all goes well for you.
Why are y’all even talking about the exam rn? I legit forgot it existed till today when I saw the Atar notes forum lol. The exam is over, you can’t change anything now.

well, for verbal i did every question except for all the worded problems (i did like 4 of them), for nr i did about 30 questions and guessed the rest.

Bro thanks for boosting my confidence, but even though i did good on maths, everyone found it hard so it makes no difference. As u say, everyone found verbal easy, i didnt even come close to finishing. and everyone gyuessed around 20 for numerical, i guessed like 75% of the test. The Achievement tests are what will carry me, as i did well on reading, very good on writing, and aced maths, but idk if that will be enough.

True, but I feel like having a mental breakdown. Lol, is it just me?

haha nah a lot of people i know who tried out this year feel this way. like all the parabolas and completely new style of verbal and numerical was unexpected. just remember it was new for everyone. not everyone expects it. i never really expected them to have parabolas but previous years have had them (as well as binary and base 8 i hate them so much theyre the epitome of evil) but still. you should be proud that you even did the exam. my best friend (year below me) did the mock exam that james an was holding and freaked out after she sat it. a lot of people chicken out. the fact that you and many others didnt is already a massive achievement :)))

Ayyy! Whatever you need man! I don’t know you in person (that’s okay) but I really do think you’ll be okay and don’t stress too much. If you pretty much only feel like you stuffed up on 1-2 tests it’s okay- remember there are people who didn’t even finish writing and guessed entire tests. And also, getting into MHS is quite a big goal, so even if you don’t (I doubt that!) be proud of yourself. I think I’m the one that should really be worried! 😅

You shouldn’t be worried. If i were u I’d be dying of happiness because I did good on verbal and numerical
