A Chip Goes Through Med School

Discovered this forum when I was applying for university, but mostly lurked. Always looked forward to maybe one day being able to start my own. Well, here I am, accepted into university and starting a university journey journal! I will confess that I've never been good at keeping up with anything in my life, being both inconsistent and a slow runner, but I promise to try and keep up with this journal (or at least not abandon it). This is for those who want to know what it's like to be a medical student, as well as to entertain anyone else who likes to read about other peoples' lives.

Course?
B.MedSci/MD at the University of Newcastle.

Why medicine?
Ah, the old interview question. As inappropriate as this is to tell an admissions officer, the most succinct possible answer to this is that I really want to help people. I felt like medicine was the best way that I could do that. Another reason is that I loved the more human-based topics in high school Biology, and the idea of being able to continue to learn things like that and more throughout my career and life is immensely appealing. Also, and this is definitely COVID-related, I feel like I need to be in a career where I get to work with people and interact with actual, real-life, not-on-a-screen people.

What do you like outside of academics? Hobbies? Interests?
  • Music. I play several instruments and listen to music pretty much constantly. My mum probably wouldn't have ever imagined that I'd say something like this when I used to complain about having to practise the piano as a child, but I genuinely feel that music is one of my passions.
  • Comedy. Stand-up, panel shows, sitcoms, anything and everything. If it makes me laugh, I'll probably enjoy it. I think that comedy is like medicine in a way, in how they both make people feel better in their own distinct way.
  • Football (or soccer for anyone who isn't from the UK). I can only assume that I got caught up in lunchtime kick-arounds and Match Attax trading cards as a child, and it all led on from that. I'm terrible at fantasy, though.
  • Languages. I know a few, would like to learn more in the future.

Goals for the year?
  • Don't fail uni.
  • Make some new friends and do some stereotypical young person/uni student stuff (you know what I mean, socializing, going places, doing things).
  • Keep up with some of my hobbies and interests so that I don't burn out and be miserable.
  • Keep up a reasonably healthy lifestyle.

Well, let's get on with it, shall we? 加油, allez, давай!

Hey Dorito  :),
This looks like an awesome journey and I can't wait to follow it throughout the year. Apart from piano, what other instruments do you play and do you have a favourite one? I can also relate to the hating practice as a child but then gaining a real appreciation for music and playing music later on.

Et est-ce que tu parles français? I have no idea what the other languages are at the bottom, wait let me look them up. Mm Chinese and Russian, wow that's super cool.

Anyway, congratulations on getting into medicine and I'll see you around AN!

Hi, love the username btw. Right, if you're all going to be invested in this, it looks like I'm going to have to try extra hard to keep updating it! I play cello (took lessons in it), bass guitar (no lessons but it was fairly easy to pick up for me) and a bit of guitar (very poorly, but I need to pick up a second-hand one when I get to uni because I'd like to get better at it). You may notice a theme here with the stringed instruments, haha. Not sure if I have a favourite; I like them all in different ways and for different styles of music and for different purposes. Good to know someone else can relate to the hating practise as a child and then finding some kind of enjoyment in music later on.

Oui, je parle français. Et toi? Je l'ai appris au college pendant sept ans. Yeah, I'm ethnically Chinese so it made sense to learn it. And I fear I'm cheating a bit by putting Russian down as a language that I "know". I'm certainly learning it, but I can't really say that I know it, not properly yet.

And I hope I see you around AN too!

Good luck for next year! And you're pretty much exactly my target audience, hopefully you'll get some kind of insight into what it's like to be a student at UoN before you even start.

Haha yeah. Did you just graduate from Year 12 or did you do/partially do a degree already?

I'm fresh from Year 12. So I assume uni will be quite the shock to the system!

You sound exactly like one of my teachers from school; he just asked me the same question when I emailed him, haha. No idea so far, I've always been one of those people who is interested in everything. I guess I have time to decide.

I hope that imparts my apparent reservoir of wisdom as teachers often do ;)  (jk, don't get at me if you are teacher reading this). But yeah you have heaps of time to decide! Do you read any medicine-related books?

I've read quite a few. I suppose Oliver Sacks' books are the more generic answer, but they are amazing and a real insight into a more human side of neurology. Henry Marsh's books on his life as a neurosurgeon are fascinating too, perhaps a bit more curmudgeonly but good reads nonetheless. I've just realized that this list makes me sound like I'm very interested in neuro as a specialty, haha, I promise I'm very very open to anything! And finally, personal preference (perhaps from spending my formative years watching a lot of British TV which is at least partially people complaining about things in a comedic fashion, if we're honest), I did enjoy Adam Kay's books on being a junior doctor in the UK, even if he did end up quitting the profession. They're quite humorously written and I think helped dissuade high school me from thinking that medicine was a purely enjoyable and 'dream' profession (bit of a reality check, if you will).

Haven't read any of Oliver Sacks' books, ill check them out! I love: When Breathe becomes Air, going to reread it hahah
