Semester 1 update (even though my units* are full year this year)

Most favourite:
Literally every unit Monash offers bar PSC2232. (See below)
PSC4212: Research in Formulation Science (So far I swear I've learnt more in the lab doing stuff than in ANY other unit I have)
PSC2041: Biopharmaceutics
PSC3142: Computational Drug Design
PSC2142: Computational Chemistry and PSC2222: Formulation Chemistry (Tied)
PSC3221: Biomolecule Formulation and Modified Release Technologies
PSC1042: Multi-Disciplinary Pharmaceutical Science
PSC1012: Physiology I
PSC1031: Physical Chemistry I
PSC2011: Biochemical pharmacology
PSC3232: Professional Placement
PSC3231: Pharmaceutical Product Manufacture
PSC3041: Applied Analytical Methods
PSC1041: Scientific Inquiry
PSC1032: Physical Chemistry II
PSC3211: Industrial Formulation
PSC1012: Physiology II and PSC2031: Analytical Methods (tied)
PSC3222: Nanotechnology and Modified Release Technologies (Angus let us down on this one- it was a shambles :( )
PSC1021: Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry I
PSC3212: Pharmaceutical Commercialisation. The fluffy snake brought me so much pain. :(
PSC2012: Molecular Pharmacology
PSC1022: Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry II
PSC2021: Structural Organic Chemistry
Hell
Second Hell
Third Hell
Finally: PSC2232- Colloid Chemistry.
You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

*PSC4211: Advanced Formulation Science. I have not yet had a single piece of marked coursework, so I really cannot rank this one yet. Maybe ask me after my first bit of coursework in ... July?

It would've been cool if we actually did anything related to it in the unit! 😅 Instead, we got a series of pracs we all failed for not following the instructions (we did) and got essentially told that our reports we had to write on (non-existent) unit content were infactual even though we combed through every relevant resource in the library to write it up because we had no lectures to base our reports on.

Tldr: It was just a mess

I hated BIOL10003. Genetics part was okay, but the environment part was just terrible imo.

Best of luck for paper 2. I heard paper 1 was quite hard (as is the case every year), so I know that 'crushing' feeling of MCB. Feel free to message me if you would like some insight into your future biomed studies :)

2nd year Biomed- 01/07/2020
*I still haven't sat my PSYC10003 exam but I reckon it should be a good time *
1. BLAW10001 Principles of Business Law
Tanya is a great lecturer! Funny and engaging. The content is easy to digest, and the exam easy. It is indeed a true easy H1!
2. PSYC10003 Mind, Brain & Behaviour 1
Chris is an amazing coordinator, the overall content is interesting and easy to understand
3. MUSI20150 Music & Health
4. BIOL10003 Genes & Environment
DAWN is DA BEST
5. MAST10011 Experimental Design & Data Analysis
6. MUSI20149 Music Psychology
7. BIOL10002 Biomolecules and cells
8. BIOM20001 Molecular and Cellular Biomedicine
Paper B saved the subject tbh and great co-ordinators (despite them changing the marks and structure of paper B 2 days b4 the exam  :P)
9. MAST10016 Mathematics for Biomedicine
Practice exam was so much harder than actual exam :(
10. PHYC10007 Physics for Biomedicine
plug: read my review
11. CHEM10006 Chemistry for Biomedicine
Super hard, unengaging lecturers, tutorials were poor. I learnt new things while doing my exam. I am so shocked I passed.

Ok, first Semester BSc here, and it's been a busy Semester  :), but...

  • MAST20009 Vector Calculus
Frankly I found this quite an easy subject, and there was definitely further the subject could have gone, but Christine is a fantastic and clear lecturer and the content is really enjoyable
  • BLAW10001 Principles of Business Law
Loved this subject, Tanya is an awesome lecturer, the content is really interesting and useful, and the assessment/time overhead is ridiculously easy.
  • FNCE10002 Principles of Finance
Kinda neutral on this, I didn't personally find Finance too enjoyable overall, but it was decently taught and well-organised. The brief touch on derivative securities and Options I found quite interesting at the end though.
  • PHYC10001 Physics 1 Advanced
Honestly hated this subject so much, the labs (especially now being online) and WileyPlus were ridiculously time-consuming, the content was kinda boring, the maths dodgy and just overall an overall lack of organisation (especially compared to the maths subject). Now I've got to decide whether to put myself through Physics 2 Advanced  :( so I can study further Physics in 2nd year...

11. MTH2010 - Multivariable Calculus
12. BMS2021 - Human Molecular Cell Biology
13. BMS3052 - Biomedical Basis and epidemiology of human disease (12 points)
14. MTH1030 - Techniques for modelling
15. BMS1052 - Human Neurobiology
16. BMS1021 - Cells, Tissues and Organisms
17. BMS2052 - Microbes in health and disease
18. BMS1042 - Public Health and Preventitive Medicine
19. STA1010 - Statistical Methods for science
20. CHM1022 - Chemistry II
21. BMS1031 - Medical Biophysics
22. BMS2062 - Introduction to bioinformatics

It's been a while so I've even reshuffled some of my previous rankings and added the bolded subjects.
Also, I should note that I liked all my subjects. Obviously some more than others but I found all of them to be valuable.
It is only 22 subjects listed since I did 2 "double subjects" as noted by "12 points".
So this list is the equivalent of 24 units (144 credit points).

What made MTH2132 stand out from the rest?
It is quite different to most of the subjects I did. It was kind of a unique unit in which the lecturer, chief examiner, unit coordinator were all the same person so they had a lot of control on what they wanted to teach. I think one of the most important things for a unit to be is well organised and well run and this definitely was.

I believe it isn't a core unit for anyone so everyone chooses it as an elective so it allows for a lot more creativity for the lecturer. They are also extremely passionate about what they were teaching and they always put in a heap of effort in lectures. You could really tell there was a heap of time put into making the animations for the slides. They also brought in a heap of tools for demonstrations. For instance; magic tricks, juggling, bubbles and of course all of it related to the content taught.

In addition to this, the content was unlike most other maths units in which there were a fair bit of practical/conceptual questions along with some mathematical history (not really tested on this but gave great context). It isn't one of those units where you can just learn some formulas or techniques and be fine - you really do need to understand the content and be able to "think outside the box". There are also other interesting stuff like higher dimensions taught. It also highlighted a lot of mathematics within the real world where some people may have not considered before e.g. in design, juggling, movies/tv-shows etc

Hmm, if it helps you can still do the standard physics 2 subject (PST/PHYC10004) after passing Physics 1 Advanced, and then go on to do second year physics. I guess the lab/WileyPlus/organisation aspect will be pretty much the same, although comparing with a friend who did Physics 2 Advanced while I did PST the labs and WileyPlus questions are a bit easier. Plus PST has a much less insane exam.

Yeah, that’s a consideration, I’ve heard that overall P2A is better than P1A, so I guess I’ll just have to see. I’m mainly sticking it out because Second-year Physics subjects seem way, way more interesting and I’ve heard are overall better run in general (plus Quantum and Thermal has no labs - which is awesome!!)
