Psychology - Test Your Understanding

Every week on Monday, a handful of questions on a topic will be posted to help you revise, consolidate knowledge and help each other out! You can post your answers for feedback, as well as having the opportunity to give others feedback! (If you want to post anon you can PM me or any other member to post them for you)

This week we are going to be testing our knowledge of the nervous system, which is the first 5 dot points of the study design! This covers, the central & peripheral nervous system, the spinal reflex, the role of the neuron, neurotransmitters and neurotransmitter dysfunction.

For those using the Oxford textbook you will find the theory in Chapter 2 and 3, those using the Jacaranda or Edrolo textbook this is knowledge from Chapter 2.

I hope you're all psyched for the first lot of questions! Let me know what a nice amount of questions are, as well as how we should progress through topics (how may study design dot points to cover a week)!

Week 1: Nervous System
Q1.____________ neurons carry information from organs and muscles to the central nervous system while ___________ neurons carry information to organs, muscles and glands from the central nervous system.
A. sensory, motor
B.Motor, Sensory
C.Peripheral, autonomic
D.Autonomic, peripheral
[VCAA 2010 Psychology Exam 1 Q8]

Q2. When Geoff feels excited, which parts of his nervous system are most likely to be activated?
A. the sympathetic branch of the somatic nervous system
B. the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system
C. the parasympathetic branch of the somatic nervous system
D. the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system
[VCAA 2014 Psychology Exam 2 Q11]

Q3.Draw a diagram of a neuron and label 6 main features
[Adapted from 2019 Checkpoints Question 1.44]

Q4.Jonah was very scared of spiders. One morning, he walked into the bathroom and saw a very large spider
on the mirror. He screamed and ran out of the bathroom. His mouth was dry, his heart was beating very fast and he was also breathing quickly. With reference to the human nervous system, explain why Jonah would have experienced these changes in
his body.
(3 marks)
[VCAA 2014 Psychology Exam 2: Section B Q5]

Q5.Which of the following identifies the changes in neural function and motor function that are associated with
Parkinson’s disease?

[VCAA 2018 Psychology Exam: Section A Q3]

Q6.Diseases such as multiple sclerosis result from damage to the myelin of neurons.
Therefore, in terms of neural transmission, people who suffer from multiple sclerosis would most likely experience

A.    increased protection of the affected neurons.
B.    increased transmission of neurotransmitters across the synapse.
C.    slowing of the speed of electrical transmissions within a neuron.
D.    difficulty receiving chemical messages from surrounding neurons.

The answers, will be posted on Friday in this post, to allow everyone time to have a go and give and get feedback!

You're a legend!

QCE students note that this is a relevant topic for you, question 3 & 6 are more unit 1/2 knowledge but if you can answer them go for it :)

I somehow managed to completely and utterly forget to update this thread last week so here are last weeks and this week's questions and the answers to Week 1.

Week 2
This week we are going to be testing our knowledge of stress!
This covers;
sources of stress
Selye's GAS Model (stress as a biological process)
Lauzarous and Folkmans Transactional Model of Stress and Coping (stress as a psychological process)
and
coping with stress.
For those using the Jacaranda or Edrolo textbook this is knowledge from Chapter 3

Week 2: Stress
Q1.According to Lazarus and Folkman’s Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, the type of stress that Sarah experienced when her grandmother died is
A. harm.
B. threat.
C. eustress.
D. challenge
[2011 VCAA Psychology Exam Section A Question 40

Q2.Explain one difference between eustress and distress
[2012 VCAA Psychology Exam Section B Question 9

Q3.Stella is 17 years old and undertaking her VCE. Stella is feeling overwhelmed by what Year 12 involves and has had difficulty sleeping during the school term. Her friend Audrey, however, is enjoying Year 12 and is finding the SACs
challenging but manageable.
In terms of primary appraisal in Lazarus and Folkman’s Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, explain why
Stella and Audrey have evaluated their situations differently
(4 marks)
[2011 VCAA Psychology Exam Section B Question 3a

Q4.Taiga’s wife lost her job and Taiga had to start working 60 hours a week to make sure they could pay their bills.
During the next two months, Taiga experienced several viral infections. He went to his doctor, who said he was
suffering from stress.
Taiga’s recurring viral infections were most likely due to:

A. an increase in cortisol.
B. a decrease in cortisol.
C. a decrease in noradrenaline.
D. a decrease in allostatic load.
[2014 VCAA Psychology Exam Section A Question 33

Week 3
This week we are going to be testing our knowledge of neural basis of learning and memory!
This covers
neural plasticity
changes to connections between neurons (Long term potentiation and depression)
and
role of neurotransmitters and neurohormones (including the role of glutamate and adrenaline)
For those using the Jacaranda or Edrolo textbook this is knowledge from Chapter 4

Week 3: Neural Basis of Learning and Memory
Q1.The neural development of newborn babies typically involves
A. no neural plasticity.
B. creation of new muscles.
C. creation of neural pathways.
D. a decrease in the number of neural pathways
[VCAA 2011 Psychology Exam Section A Q2]

Q2.Meredith was born into an English-speaking family and acquired the English language in the usual way. No other languages were spoken in the home. When Meredith started high school, she studied Italian as a second language.
In terms of brain plasticity, it is likely that Meredith’s developmental plasticity will

A. increase with age.
B. diminish with age.
C. remain constant over her life span.
D. enable her to acquire any language she is exposed to across her life span.
[VCAA 2011 Psychology Exam Section A Q4]

Q3.Neural plasticity in the brain is usually dependant on __________ synapses in the brain
A.glutamergic
B.dopaminergic
C.serontonergic
D.GABAergic

Q4.Distinguish longterm potentiation from long term depression (2 marks)

The answers, will be posted on Friday in this post, to allow everyone time to have a go and give and get feedback!
Also, if anyone wants to help on this thread let me know!
Week 1 Answers
Q1. A
Using the mnemonic SAME we can remember that Sensory neurons are afferent (towards the central nervous system, away from muscles and organs) and motor are Efferent (away from central nervous system towards muscles)

Q2. B
We know the parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for resting so it cant be C or D.
And excitement isn't voluntary like picking something up is so it must be autonomic

Q3. Any of the following:

Q4. To gain the 3 marks the points needed are:
- spider (fear inducing stimulus) activated sympathetic nervous system
- prepared his body for a fight, flight or freeze response
- activated internal muscles, organs and glands by increasing heart and respiration rates, but reduces salivation as digestion is slowed down

Q5. A
Q6. D
