UMEP Mathematics Requirements?

Hey Guys, I'm in year 11 this year and doing Methods, our school doesn't offer AGM so i couldn't do that this year. Im doing Further 3/4 this year, in a class full of accelerated year 11s, we haven't had any SACs yet, but I've been acing all tests, i think i lost 1 or 2 here and there because of silly mistakes etc, although i don't think further would be a good indicator for UMEP Maths.

What sort of grade should i have to get in Methods, A+, A, B+, to at least be able to cope in the subject?

Also, how much harder is it than Specialist Maths?, is the subject basically 1st Year Uni Maths? if so what happens when i go into Uni, and do say Engineering, will i have to repeat the same subject?

tl;dr - What are the requirements to get into UMEP Maths at school. My school doesn't offer GMA. Is it 1st year uni math, or just intro?

Cheers

Any grade between A - A+ should be fine. If you get an occasional B+, that should be fine too.

Also, how much harder is it than Specialist Maths?, is the subject basically 1st Year Uni Maths?

UMEP Maths builds on Specialist Maths in the same way that Specialist Maths builds on Methods. The only difference is that there is a lot of completely new content in UMEP Maths (vector spaces, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, solid geometry, etc.), which will take some getting used to. UMEP Maths is basically a semester of First Year Maths. It is generally considered more difficult than certain subjects like Linear Algebra and Calculus 1. Subjects like Accelerated Maths 1, however, are generally considered to be a little harder.

what happens when i go into Uni, and do say Engineering, will i have to repeat the same subject?

When you enter uni, you can seek exemption from a number of First Year maths subjects, such as Linear Algebra and Calculus 1. I believe you can seek exemption from Accelerated Maths 1 as well. The UMEP Maths course is a little different to First Year Maths in the sense that no First Year student can do it. It basically brings together random bits of maths from a number of different subjects. So in short, no you will not have to repeat the same subject, nor will you be able to.

Does this work between universities as well? Say you did UMEP Maths, can you apply for exemption from Accelerated Maths at Monash, or vice versa?

I believe you can. (Not sure if Monash has Accelerated Maths, but it would have something similar.) What I know for sure is that you can apply for credit (which basically means that you can do one less subject in one of your semesters).

So is a 5.0 increment in UMEP maths equivalent to a SS of 50?

UMEP or any other extension programs can only be counted as your 5th or 6th subject which accounts for 10% increment. It can not be taken as your top 4. However, it helps you to gain some uni credit.

yep! 5.0 is equivalent to a 50 study score and is much easier to get than a 50 in a VCE subject! you only need to get over 90 percent, which is not easy but not too hard

Doing a university extension subject for the marks probably isn't the best strategy. Personal interest and gaining uni credits are more reasonable rationales.

I think a few years ago you could get an increment of 5.5 but it's capped off at 5.0 as of recent :P
