Hi Aaul :)

With hard work and determination, anyone can achieve a high ATAR - even with poor scaling subjects :) The thing with scaling is, however, we don't exactly know how our subjects will scale until the end of unit 3/4 (once everyone has completed all of the IAs and the external assessment). You can have a rough guess at what will scale well, for example you can probably assume that chemistry and methods will scale up. Scaling is also dependant upon how well you perform in a subject compared to everyone else who is studying it.

One thing I would keep in mind is that how you perform in year 10 may not be a reliable indicator of how well you will perform this year, in year 11. I know students who, in grade 10, were getting As, but in year 11 gots Bs and Cs. I also know students who, in grade 10, got Bs and Cs and ended up getting As in year 11. Everyone's year 11 journey will be slightly differ but if you work hard, take time to relax, eat well, sleep well, and enjoy yourself, I'm sure you will do very well :)
If, by the end of the year, you aren't happy with how you are tracking in your subjects, just remember that everything can still change in grade 12 and that AN is always here to support you if you are having any troubles in your subjects :)

Hi aaul :)

I really encourage you to try not to think about scaling that much. There are plenty of examples in Victoria of people who took subjects that mostly scaled down and achieved a 98+ ATAR. For example, Joseph41 received a 99+ ATAR with only one subject that scaled up (you can see an AMA from him here. Scaling is there to adjust for cohort strength and make it a more level playing field for subjects, not to advantage or disadvantage any particular subjects.

No one really knows how subjects will scale until after exams when QCAA analyses the data but in Vic usually bio, chem & methods scale up. I'm guessing English will scale down & I'm not sure about your other subjects. I do however want to emphasise that this is not something there's not much merit in trying to predict. It's unlikely to help you accurately predict your ATAR and is not a good basis for making subject selection decisions.

98 is hard since you need to score in the top 2% of the state to do that but it is definitely possible for you to achieve that. Use this year to build your foundational knowledge for your subjects & to learn how you study most effectively and you'll be off to a great start. Best of luck! :)

Hi Everyone,
I have just started Year 11. My subjects are chemistry, biology, maths methods, english, econ. and legal studies. I want to achieve a very high ATAR but I honestly think that it will not be possible for me. Also, can anyone give me an idea of how well my subjects will scale? I want to study a double degree of science and law honours at UQ so I am aiming for a 98. I doubt this is possible, especially with the subjects that I picked. I am a B average student so I will need to study very hard. RIP me :(
Hi Aaul,

In every cohort I've taught, I've seen some students grow enormously over the Year 11-12 period: mentally, emotionally, socially, and academically. All of these students have had a positive attitude, worked hard, and believed in themselves. You should start afresh this year - your future depends more on your attitude in the present than on anything from the past.

I wouldn't worry about scaling. Focus on doing as well as you can in the subjects you chosen.

My advice: Try to learn how to enjoy studying. It shouldn't be a chore to learn the subjects you've chosen. It should be interested and rewarding. There's a lot of good tips on how to improve your studying skills on these forums and in the guides.

Yes. This is very true - happens almost every year!
